Quarry Farm, located on the outskirts of Elmira, was the summer home to Mark Twain and his family during the 1870s and 1880s. It was here that he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and many important short works. Today, the house belongs to Elmira College and serves as a residence for Mark Twain scholars. The Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies offers a variety of programs, including conferences, seminars, and public lecture series. For information, call (607) 735-1941 or write The Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies, Elmira College, Box 7035, Elmira, NY 14901. The Study was built for Mark Twain by Susan and Theodore Crane in 1874, so that the author would have a place to write undisturbed. In 1952, the building was moved to the campus of Elmira College. It is open to the public daily from mid-June through Labor Day and by appointment throughout the rest of the year. For an appointment, call (607) 735-1941.

Mark Twain
Biography Although born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, the author adopted what is one of the most famous pen names in literature, Mark Twain, from a Mississippi river slang phrase. Twain is famous as an author, satirist, essayist, newspaper contributor, and lecturer. He wrote about a myriad of topics, ranging from life along the Mississippi River, detailed in famous works such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1872) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), to a collection of essays written while abroad, to political essays. Twain was an influential writer of his time and remains so today. During the Spanish-American War, Twain became a fervent anti-imperialist, even joining the Anti-Imperialist League . His sentiments about the war and the war in the Phillippines were published nationwide.

American humorist and writer best known, of course, for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer etc etc. While his realism and humor put his interests outside the Gothic tradition, some of his works exploit supernaturalist elements, though always in a parodic or sardonic or humorous way.

It's not really all that rare for a person to have insights on what makes this species tick and have those insights stand up to the harsh tests of history. What is rare, in my mind, is for those insights to remain vital, relevant, and funny a century later. I won't bore you with why I think this is. I'm not sure I could, anyway. There are scholars, far better equipped than I, to make this case, and I will leave that to them. My interest is to see Twain's writings available to the Web and to let you judge for yourself.

T HE MARK TWAIN CIRCLE OF NEW YORK was formed in 1999 as a successor to the long-established Mark Twain Association of New York, which was founded in 1926 and survived until age and infirmity overtook it in 1998. After a very well-attended and enthusiastic launch meeting, all of the group’s officers became so distracted with Y2K preparedness and other weighty matters that the nascent Circle was pretty much left to fend for itself, alas. It is the sponsors’ earnest hope that this program will help spark a revival of interest. They believe New York is too great a city, with too many Twain-related landmarks and connections, not to have an active Mark Twain interest group.
