I have no riches but my thoughts.
Yet these are wealth enough for me.
Moon, worn thin to the width of a

How good to go, light into light,
and still Giving light, dying. I make the most of all that comes, And the least of all that goes. It is my heart that makes my songs, not I.

Sara Teasdale So soon my body will have gone
Beyond the sound and sight of men,
And tho' it wakes and suffers now,
Its sleep will be unbroken then;
But oh, my frail immortal soul
That will not sleep forevermore,
A leaf borne onward by the blast,
A wave that never finds the shore. Sara Teasdale was an American poet from St. Louis, Missouri. As in her poem Immortal , above, Sara and her poetry have become immortal like the leaf borne by the blast and the wave that never finds the shore. Despite the fact that Sara is one of the lesser known poets, her poetry has refused to die and her collected poems have never been out of print. Every generation seems to find her and re-discover the talent of one of America's truly great poets. From the inside jacket cover of her Collected Poems, 1966, published by the Macmillian Company, it says, "Sara Teasdale, who was born in 1884 and died in 1933, is something of an anomaly among twentieth-century American poets. As the passing years obscure the vogish glitter that once surrounded many of her more flamboyant contempraries, the strong, soft voice of the lady from St. Louis speaks to succeeding generations with the same immediate intimacy that enthralled her first readers." The Strange Victory of Sara Teasdale

S ARA T EASDALE
Sara Teasdale was born in St. Louis and lived both on Lindell Blvd. and on Kingsbury Place. While attending Mary Institute and Hosmer Hall, she began writing poems. First published in 1907, Teasdale wrote several collections of poetry in the following decade and became known for the intensity of her lyrics. In 1918 Love Songs won what was essentially the first Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Expressing disenchantment with marriage, Teasdale's later poetry resonated with suffering and strength. According to one biographer, Sara Teasdale spoke for "women emerging from the humility of subservience into the pride of achievement."

Bonnie Hamre: Sara Teasdale Page
Sara Teasdale
    Years ago, suffering from first love lost, I picked up my mother's book of poetry and fell in love with the poems of Sara Teasdale. My mother smiled, seeing in me another woman who believed Sara spoke only to her. And why not? For whom else could the following possibly be written?
    Advice to a Girl
    No one worth possessing
    Can be quite possessed;
    Lay that on your heart,
    My young angry dear;
    This truth, this hard and precious stone,
    Lay it on your hot cheek,
    Let it hide your tear.
    Hold it like a crystal
    When you are alone And gaze in the depths of the icy stone. Long, look long and you will be blessed: No one worth possessing Can be quite possessed. I grew older and as the pain lessened, I forgot the comfort I had found in Sara's poetry and eventually forgot about her. That is, until I "found" her again by accident, browsing on the web, and re-read some of her poems. I felt a wealth of emotions, an intensity I hadn't felt in a long time. Fascinated, I read more, learning about the woman who lived at the turn of the century, through World War I, the 20's and the early thirties. Much of the passion she imbued in her words can be dismissed as facile sentiment. Until you think twice, and the fervor, the very real awareness seeps through your conscious and you vibrate with empathy.
