Biography
By Nyesha Basey and Inez Ramsey

Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 13, 1943, but moved with her family to Toledo, Ohio , where she spent most of her childhood. She went to public schools and college in Toledo. After graduating from the University of Toledo, she joined the Peace Corp and spent two years teaching English and history. While living in Africa, she observed black pride and independence which reminded her of stories her father told her.
She returned to the United States to teach and recruit for the Peace Corp. She then studied journalism at the University of Colorado, where she received her Master's degree. While attending the university, she joined the Black Student Alliance (BSA) and helped to create a black studies program at the school. After graduating, she worked as a study skills coordinator. She decided to move to Los Angeles where she worked during the day and wrote at night. For more biographical information, visit

Mildred Taylor USA Normandy, France
June, 1996 Along the beach below Ponte de Hoc
wind shapes the sand with its resolute hand,
waves thrash erratically like white-knuckled fists,
and behind the shore tall rocks circle like shoulders.
Up on the cliff
the shattered skeleton of a blockhouse sprawls in silent censure.
This is the beach that cost more than two thousand lives to free.
All day clouds collect, hide the sky, begin to breathe their rain.
The cool fingers of water
run down my face, and I shudder as I had shuddered when I heard the names Biggy Brinson, Harry Jackson, Cliff Sawyer rushing through the halls of my school in whispers as if that would make it not true. I did not know the faces, just the names separated from me by five years that brought them to their time here in 1944. As I walked to school, grenade were thrown on faces. Blood of those who did not reach the cliffs pooled with the surf onto the shore then slid back into the sea while I read newspapers, listened to the radio, studied maps

TAYLOR, MILDRED
Author Biographical Statement: 1983 Biography from Fifth Book of Junior Authors and Illustrators 1999 update Mildred D. Taylor was born in 1943 in Jackson, Mississippi, and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. In many of her college preparatory classes, Mildred Taylor was the only black student. She often found herself painfully embarrassed by the lackluster portrait of black people as presented in history class. After graduating from the University of Toledo, Taylor joined the Peace Corps and worked for two years in Ethiopia, teaching English and history. After returning home, she earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Colorado. In her Newbery acceptance speech, Taylor recalled her childhood and annual trips back to Mississippi "when we children had finished all the games we could think to play, we would join the adults, soon becoming enraptured by their talk, for it would often turn to . . . a history of black people told through stories." "Those stories about the small and often dangerous triumphs of black people . . . about human pride and survival in a cruelly racist society were like nothing I read in the history books. . . . There were no black heroes or heroines in those books; no beautiful black ladies, no handsome black men; no people filled with pride, strength, or endurance. . . . [The books told] a history of a docile, subservient people happy with their fate who did little or nothing to shatter the chains that bound them, both before and after slavery. There was obviously a terrible contradiction between what the books said and what I had learned from my family."

about this author
"I do not know how old I was when the daydreams became more than that, and I decided to write them down, but by the time I entered high school, I was confident that I would one day be a writer." Mildred D. Taylor
Newbery Award-winning author, Mildred D. Taylor, was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. After graduating from the University of Toledo, she spent two years in Ethiopia with the Peace Corps teaching English and history. Returning to the United States, Ms. Taylor entered the University of Colorado's School of Journalism, from which she received her Master of Arts degree. As a member of the Black Student Alliance, she worked with students and University officials in structuring a Black Studies program at the University. She currently lives in Colorado.
"From as far back as I can remember, my father taught me a different history from the one I learned in school. By the fireside in our Ohio home and in Mississippi, where I was born and where my father's family had lived since the days of slavery, I had heard about our past. It was not an organized history beginning in a certain year, but one told through storiesstories about great-grandparents and aunts and uncles and others that stretched back through the years of slavery and beyond. It was a history of ordinary people, some brave, some not so brave, but basically people who had done nothing more spectacular than survive in a society designed for their destruction."

Biography of Mildred D. Taylor

by Carrie Margaret Steele (SHS) Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi , on September 13, 1943. She is the daughter of Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. Even though she was born in the South, she did not grow up there. Yet, for Ms. Taylor, the South still holds pleasant memories as the home of her ancestors. When she was only three months old, her parents moved her and her sister to live in the North. They moved to a newly-integrated Ohio town called Toledo. When she went to school, she was the only black child in her class. Her father decided to leave the South in the mid-1940's because he did not want his children to live their lives as he had lived his, in a segregated, racist society that allowed little or no opportunity to blacks. Over the years she came to know the South through the yearly trips her family took to Mississippi and through the stories told whenever the family gathered. Mildred Taylor was quoted in Something About the Author

Mildred D.Taylor
Mildred D. Taylor The telling of family stories was a regular feature of Taylor family gatherings. Family storytellers told about the struggles relatives and friends faced in a racist culture, stories that revealed triumph, pride, and tragedy. The stories inspired Taylor, and she still has a vivid recollection of the storytelling sessions: The Friendship The Horn Book Magazine , March 1989, 179-80) From these stories, Taylor learned about her great-grandfather, the son of a white plantation owner in Alabama and a slave woman. In the late 1800s, this young man ran away from Alabama to buy land and settle in Mississippi; the land he purchased more than 100 years ago is still owned by the Taylor family.
