Jim was born in Cranston, Rhode Island, the third child of James and Ellen Tate. In 1941, he married his wife of 53 years, Anna Bilstad Tate. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Jim and Mary. After serving his country in the European Theater from 1943 to 1946, Jim and Anna settled in Brooklyn where Jim worked with shipping in the clothing industry. After retirement, Jim and Anna moved to San Antonio in 1988, where they were active first at Cross of Victory Lutheran Church, and then since 1992, here at Zion. In addition to his love for his own family and his care for his mother and sisters, Jim is remembered for his love of his church and his forthrightness in all his dealings.

Daughter - Mary Tate, San Antonio, TX

James Tate
James Tate, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, has also won Guggenheim and NEA Fellowships, the Tanning Prize from the Academy of American Poets and the William Carlos Williams Award. His first book of poems, The Lost Pilot , won the Yale Younger Poets series award. His collection of prose from the University of Michigan Poets on Poetry Series is entitled The Route as Briefed . The author of thirteen books of poetry, most recently Memoir of the Hawk , he will have a book of stories, Dreams of a Robot Dancing Bee , this spring. His fiction has been compared to Chekov and Bruno Schultz, and his poetry is filled with situations that "tug at the edges of the unexpected. . . . A collection of stories, Dreams of a Robot Dancing Bee , is just out from Verse Press. He teaches at the University of Massachusetts and is a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

    Biography of James Tate
    James Tate was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1943. He is the author of twelve collections of poetry including his first volume, The Lost Pilot, which was selected for the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award in 1967, The Oblivion Ha Ha Hints to Pilgrims Absences Viper Jazz Riven Doggeries Constant Defender Reckoner (1986) and Distance From Loved Ones In 1992, Tate was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the William Carlos Williams Award for his Selected Poems (1991). His most recent collection, Worshipful Company of Fletchers (The Ecco Press, 1994) received the National Book Award for Poetry. Among his other awards are fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Institute for Arts and Letters Award for Poetry. He also received the $100,000 Tanning Prize for The Academy of American Poets in 1995. He has taught poetry at the University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, and Emerson College. He currently teaches at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he has worked since 1971.

    The directions to the lunatic asylum were confusing,
    more likely they were the random associations
    and confused ramblings of a lunatic.
    We arrived three hours late for lunch
    and the lunatics were stacked up on their shelves,
    quite neatly, I might add, giving credit where credit is due.
    The orderlies were clearly very orderly, and they
    should receive all the credit that is their due. When I asked one of the doctors for a corkscrew he produced one without a moment's hesitation.
