When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, one of the highlights of my TV-viewing week was David Suzuki's excellent The Nature of Things . Each week I looked forward to yet another lucid insight into the workings of technology and the natural world. As a consequence of that long-running series, Suzuki is by far the best-known scientist in Canada. In fact, he has a considerable reputation worldwide. Half-truths man
It's sad to see how a man I once admired has recently stooped to obfuscation, half-truths and outright lies in support of the Luddite cause of stopping technological progress. He imagines that we should return to some mythical past in which Mankind lived in harmony with nature.
Of course, Man has never lived in harmony with nature. Instead he has fought it from the beginning, and rightly so. Until the capitalist revolution of the last 250 years gave us some control over Nature's depredations, the vast majority of people lived lives that were brutish, backbreaking and short. The were those who had a full belly with an occasional helping of meat.

Respected geneticist and professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia, Dr. David Suzuki addressed a capacity crowd at Portland State University, presenting "The Nature Challenge - Setting the Real Bottom Line for Communities." Sponsored by PSU, the Portland Office of Sustainable Development and Nike, the hall was filled with students, visitors and nature enthusiasts from Portland and the entire state of Oregon. City Commissioner Dan Saltman welcomed the audience and thanked the sponsors in helping make sustainable development a reality. The director of the city's sustainable practices, Susan Anderson, expressed enthusiasm for the turnout and the growing number of people interested in sustainable practices. She described the day as being a special turning point for her organization, as it marked a change from merely providing technical assistance to interested organizations and communities to providing educational assistance as well. Lee Weinstein, Nike's representative, introduced Suzuki with a mention of his numerous awards in his work of creating an awareness of the importance of sustainable practices.

Subject: Bent Spoon Nomination-David Suzuki and SBS
I'd like to support the previous nomination for the Bent Spoon Award for David Suzuki and SBS for their generally unscientific assessment of what they call "precognitive ability"-ie so-called psychic ability. Everyone with a modicum of common sense knows that the term 'psychic' is probably just a cultural term for what is just common 'subconscious intuition'. It is possible that such a term relates to entirely natural abilities of the brain, similar to the ability of the brain to initiate a physical reflex when one touches a hot plate, for example, but before one actually 'feels' the pain. (Scientifically verified, as opposed to most of the stuff in this program. But importantly, it is not the same as the common sense intuition of not touching the hot plate in the first place). The program stated something to the effect "The ability to detect danger before it occurs would have been strongly enforced by natural selection". However, whilst this is entirely logical, Mr Suzuki's analysis failed to recognise and explain the difference between direct sense detection versus the assumed indirect detection-for which there is little or no evidence at all. That is, the possibility of a common, and/or natural, and/or cultural explanation was ignored, whilst the program instead devoted it self to a stream of anecdotal-"I felt it and it happened" argument, which proves and explains nothing. Such anecdotal arguments, taken out of context, tend to stimulate superstitious belief, which in a opportunistic and capitalist driven society tend to take advantage of the uninformed.

Letter to David Suzuki
from
Kevin Solway
November 6, 1994 Dear David, Well, it's been an age since I received your postcard turning down our offer of honourary membership in our Atheist Society, and I've finally decided to respond. To jog your memory, you said "I believe that my position is based on an act of faith, just as a theist's is. I don't believe you can prove or disprove the existence of God." Your statement indicates to me that your belief (that you can't prove or disprove the existence of God) is not merely a belief, as one would believe, say, in evolution for example, but is in fact something you hold to be a certainty. One "believes" in evolution until such time as the evidence favours another understanding. But your belief that you can't prove or disprove the existence of God is something you hold to be an absolute truth, impervious to anything. You claim to know with certainty that all knowledge is uncertain, but are seemingly blind to the obvious meaninglessness of this notion. You should know there are two kinds of knowledge. Firstly there is scientific knowledge, which is any knowledge based on observation and measurement, and is obviously an uncertain knowledge. Then there is philosophic or purely reasoned knowledge, which has nothing to do with observation and measurement, but is based on definitions, and provides certain knowledge.

The book provides existing, practical solutions for real, systemic change, not just in the way people treat the natural world, but also in the way we treat one another. Part of the Ottawa Citizen Writing Life series, the reading will be followed by interview questions from CBC Radio's John Lacharity and

Overflow of information
This review was written by Owen Gray,
David Suzuki has been a long time campaigner for the environment. In his latest book "The Sacred Balance" he talks about homo sapiens' effect on the environment balance. Suzuki uses his personal experiences to help the reader relate to the problems affecting the environment. This draws the reader further into the book and starts to make you think seriously about the effect our standard of living is having to the planet. You start to ask yourself questions, Am I a better person because I have all the latest material possessions? "The Sacred Balance" really is designed to cause a change in thought patterns, it was not written to tell us what to do, only to start to think about the consequences of our actions.
Major Aspects
To summarise all the major issues Suzuki has raised in "The Sacred Balance" would be impossible. Suzuki is a seasoned environmentalist and I have no doubt I have skipped some important points as they were too subtle. As Philip Edwards said "it is difficult to do justice to the incredible array of suggestive knowledge" and " It is obvious that the community, spirituality, ecology and diversity are the key issues"
Overall message
Environmental information
This book has brought to light many problems that I knew existed but never thought about. The fossil fuel crisis has always been in the back of my mind but with Suzuki’s mention of a twenty to thirty year limit I must consider what I must do as a community citizen to slow this and achieve energy sustainability. We all recently went through a period of cold showers, during Victoria's gas crisis, and I am sure I was not the only one to price a new hot water service. I considered purchasing a solar system with electric back-up but the cost was astronomical, nearly three times the price of the standard electrical systems. What is Suzuki’s solution to this? I understand the solar system is cheaper to run, but what about a rebate from the government to keep me afloat when I purchase it? Or an interest-free loan?

79. Book Review Of The Sacred Balance By David Suzuki

Crucial crossroads
This review was written by Pele Wendt,
a Chemical Engineering student at RMIT University, in second semester 1998.

Major Aspects:
The Overall Message:
The overall message contained in this book focuses on the answers to the question - 'What are the real needs that we must satisfy to live rich, fulfilling lives?' It is the answers to this poignant question that Suzuki discusses. Life is all connected and man is only but a small piece of a large web. To lead a fulfilling life, one must satisfy the basic needs along with the need for love and spirituality. We need the elements of water, soil, fire, and air in order to survive. Suzuki also introduces the need for love and spirituality. All these are sacred and if man wants to continue living on this planet, then he must ensure these elements are conserved. Conservation comes in the forms of reducing pollution, seeking alternate sources of energy and maintaining a healthy planet.
Suzuki states that we need to rediscover our place in nature and restore the sacred balance. We need to create a way of life that is ecologically sustainable, filling and just. Regain ancient virtues and seek out the lessons that lie in our cultures, legends and myths. We must consider all information given to us critically, use common sense and live for a lasting future. Suzuki wants us to change the way we think, act and live. 'You are what you do, not what you say' (p.221). Suzuki also provides us with examples of extraordinary people who are accomplishing just that. Vandana Shiva and her involvement with the Green Revolution and seed patents in India; Ian Kiernan and his environmental efforts that resulted in Clean Up Australia Day and Muhammed Yunus making a difference with the Grameen Bank. Here are inspiring true tales of people out there who are making a step in the pursuit of achieving that sacred balance.

U.S. "DEFEATED" IN FISH WAR BUT CANADA
CONTINUES WAR ON ENDANGERED COHO STOCKS
An alliance of conservation groups is demanding that
Fisheries Minister Anderson not allow a second
"extinction" fishery in Juan de Fuca Strait this week.
Last week, several conservation organizations protested a seine
and gillnet
fishery in Juan de Fuca that was opened under the pretence of the "Canada First" fishing policy. This week, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans allowed a second Juan de Fuca fishery to proceed. The excuse is to catch Fraser-bound sockeye that U.S. fishermen usually catch. The conservationists say Canadian boats will catch ignore than their usual share of Fraser sockeye this year in Johnstone Straits and Fraser River fisheries, and this year's Juan de Fuca fisheries
