The Arm of the Stone
I've been reading fantasy for quite some time, and it's rare that I get to use the words "breathtakingly original" in a review. That's why I'm proud to use them in this one.
I can think of no other way to describe this book. It uses a concept that I've never seen used in quite this way. The powers of Hand and Mind are two seperate entities, though they used to co-exist in harmony.
Many years ago The Stone was stolen from its rightful place and used to create a new world, based solely on mindpower. In this world there are strict laws forbidding what kinds of tools may be built and used. The punishments for breaking them are severe.
The family that were the original protectors of the Stone has survived in secrecy, waiting for the time when it would be theirs again. That time has come. Bron survives the death of the rest of the family and finds he is the One Who Comes, but in order to take vengeance on those who stole the Stone and killed his family, he first has to join them.
Although I felt the book started a little slowly with the telling of the tale, only a short way into it I was riveted. This is one of those rare books that kept me up all night. Strauss creates characters that you can really feel for. She also has a unique ability to portray both the betrayed and the betrayer in a way that the reader cares for and sympathizes with both. Even the "bad guys", the Guardians have a human side to them. That ability combined with a unique idea makes this book, in my opinion, a "must-read" for fantasy fans.

It seems that no matter where one looks, someone has a scam waiting for those who haven't taken the time to do proper research. Without a doubt, the publishing industry has its share of them as well. This month's Spotlight is focussed on "Writer Beware", http://www.sfwa.org/beware/ , a web page created by Victoria Strauss which brings to light various writer's scams by agents, book doctors and publishers.
Strauss, with seventeen years of writing experience and a vast number of published books to her credit, is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. She is Vice-Chair of the Committee on Writing Scams and also a member of the Author's Guild. Q : How long you have been writing?
A Q : What are some of the special things that inspire you?

Victoria Strauss Interview (Mar 1999) Q: How does one grow up to be a fantasy writer? V: If you're me, you grow up reading myths and fairy tales. Even as a very small child, this was my favorite kind of reading. Although I read widely (besides fantasy and science fiction, mystery is my favorite genre), I always come back to mythic or fairy-tale literature. When I began writing, at the age of 17, it just seemed natural to write fantasyI honestly can't remember ever wanting to write anything else. Q: Which authors would you say have been your greatest inspiration sources? V: Some of my all-time favorites are Ursula LeGuin (especially THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS), John Crowley (especially LITTLE, BIG) Mervyn Peake (the GORMENGHAST trilogy), Guy Gavriel Kay (especially THE FIONAVAR TAPESTRY), Jane Gaskell (THE CITY), Anne McCaffrey's first Pern books, and anything by Patricia McKillip. I've read many books over the years, but these are the ones that stay with me. Q: Any regrets in becoming a full time writer?

Ursula K. Le Guin was born in 1929, the daughter of a writer and an anthropologist. She published her first novel, Rocannon's World , in 1966. Her fourth novel, The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, a feat she repeated with The Dispossessed (1974). The Earthsea trilogy established her as a master of fantasy as well as science fiction. She has also published poetry and short story collections, and she received the Pilgrim Award in 1989 for her critical writings. Ursula K. Le Guin Website

The series, which includes works by Dick, Zelazny, Silverberg, and Delany, has proven so successful that Millennium plans a similar Fantasy Masterworks series, beginning this year. The Dispossessed which has not been out of print since its original publication in 1974 is perhaps Le Guin's most famous work, and arguably her most intellectually challenging. It's a book of opposites: a utopian novel that doesn't flinch from exposing the flaws of its model society, a feminist-themed narrative with a male protagonist, a social commentary that presents communal cooperation as the truest human ideal, yet focuses on the inevitable separateness of the creative individual within such a structure. Through these dichotomies, Le Guin examines the tension between human aspiration and human nature, between what can be dreamed and what can be achieved. This larger theme, together with Le Guin's mature mastery of her craft, give

STRAUSS, VICTORIA
The Arm of the Stone
This novel is Strauss's debut into adult fantasy, and it differs in many ways from the excellent but rather generic works of authors like Goodkind and Jordan. I can best compare her style of writing to Ursula LeGuin's; somewhat dark and to the point. As for The Arm of the Stone , I have not read anything quite like it, but if pushed I might say the premise is a bit similar to the Darksword Trilogy by Weis and Hickman, but executed a lot better.
The Arm of the Stone is set in a parallel splinter world where technology is strictly monitored by a ruling elite known as the Guardians. The slightest transgression of the confining rules dubbed the Limits can be cause for capital punishment. Officially, this is all done in the name of magic, for technology is said to be the anti-thesis of the arcane and the prime instigator of chaos and insanity.
We get to follow the life and exploits of Bron, a man whose whole family dies as a direct result of the punishment meted out by the Guardians for the trangressions of his brother. Bron grows up hearing that he is descended from an ancient sorcerer who was ultimately defeated and killed by Percival, the founder of the Guardians, who stole the immensely powerful artifact known as the Stone. At that time the worlds of magic and technology were as one, but they were already starting to pull apart. The impressionable young boy is also told of a prophecy that states that the Stone will be reclaimed by one of the sorcerer's descendents.

She is also the owner/moderator of Writer Beware , a site dedicated to shedding light on shady agents, publishers, and editors out to take advantage of new authors. Be sure to listen for insight on the industry, and some great information on getting your work published without the hassles of un-reputable people. Her Bio I was born in Exeter, New Hampshire. My father, a university professor, was very successful in getting guest professorships and grant fellowships, so until I was 14, I never lived in the same house or attended the same school for more than two years in a row (people often ask me, when I tell them this, if I come from a military family). In addition to a number of U.S. states, I've lived in Ireland, England, and Germany. I graduated from Vassar College with a degree in Comparative Religion. This didn't make it easy for me to find a conventional job (in fact, after a while I began to tell interviewers I'd majored in History, because I got so tired of explaining that no, I wasn't taking time off from a religious vocation), but it did satisfy my fascination with world belief systems, an interest that enduringly informs my writing. Since then, I've supported my writing habit through a variety of (mostly poorly paid) positions, including store clerk, telemarketer, receptionist, secretary, research assistant, house painter, odd jobs person, and even financial manager of a not-for-profit agency. In 1997 I left the world of salaried work behind to write full-time, a decision which has made me a good deal poorer but a great deal happier.
