Silvis's first book of fiction, THE LUCKIEST MAN IN THE WORLD (University of Pittsburgh Press 1984 and Bard/Avon 1987), was selected by Joyce Carol Oates as the winner of the prestigious Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Of THE LUCKIEST MAN, the New York Times Book Review said, "Randall Silvis is a masterful storyteller." Silvis's first novel, EXCELSIOR (Henry Holt 1988), has also drawn its share of acclaim. The New York Times Book Review praised its "considerable pathos and suspense," and Library Journal called it "a ruefully comic, entertaining and impressive novel." Randall Silvis's literary mystery AN OCCASIONAL HELL was published in 1993 by The Permanent Press, and by Ballantine Books in 1996. Publishers Weekly praised its "vibrant prose, astute observations and hard truths"; John W. Aldridge, one of America's foremost literary critics, called it "a stunning performance by a writer of exceptional talent"; the Columbus Dispatch praised it as "an irresistible page-turner that can satisfy the most demanding literary tastes"; and Los Angeles Reader hailed it as "riveting...complex, convoluted, and compelling." A finalist for the 1994 Hammett Prize from the International Association of Crime Writers, it was named one of the five best crime books published in North America the preceding year. The movie based on the novel and scripted by Silvis, starring Tom Berenger in the lead role, premiered in November 1996.

ON NIGHT’S SHORE A Thomas Dunne Book for St. Martin’s Minotaur 338 pages It is the summer of 1840for some in New York City a season of prosperity; for others, another season of desperation. This is the milieu of On Night’s Shore , an amazing literary thriller from an author hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “a masterful storyteller.” Randall Silvis’s On Night’s Shore opens with one of the most spellbinding scenes in contemporary writing. A girl tosses her baby from a warehouse window, then follows the infant into the Hudson River far below. The only witness to this desperate act is a ten-year-old street arab named Augie Dubbins, a boy who survives by the motto, “In calamity, opportunity.” Augie does what he can to make a few pennies from the girl’s tragedy. In doing so he encounters another of the desperate ones, a struggling young journalist named Edgar Allan Poe, a poet and critic and newspaper hack whose penchant for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time has not only stymied his advancement as a writer but has earned him more than a few enemies. Poe, too, hopes to use the girl’s misfortune to fatten his threadbare purse. His efforts to do so lead to the discovery of the body of yet another young woman, and the ensuing investigation of her murder soon entraps Poe in a mire of murder, greed, lust and power that stretches from the Five Points slums to the gleaming heights of Fifth Avenue.

"Mysticus is a literary symphony of cosmic loneliness (displaying) a consummate mastery of prosea profound song of darkness and redemption. Author Randall Silvis offers the reader a giddy, bawdy ride through the mysteries of the human mind. Highly recommended." Midwest Book Review At nine years of age, Ronald Shepard held in his hands a blue jar, and in the jar was a fetus. Beneath the dusty glow of the bare fruit cellar bulb, Ronald mistook the fetus for a tadpole, a pollywog, and, had his mother not restrained him, he would have run for his fishing rod to skewer the newt on a number six hook. But Rosemary Shepard explained to her son that this was not bait for a hungry sea bass, this was a fetus, his brother. She had saved it for him in a blue Ball-Mason jar filled with alcohol.

It was wonderful then being young and with no responsibility but to write and believe in yourself. To write more so as to write better, that was always the goal. Publication would come eventually, you never doubted it. Well, sometimes late at night you doubted it but you were young and had great recuperative powers. Just to write and to live hard so that you had something to write about, that was the thing. If you had not eaten that day it did not matter because you could stuff yourself on words. There was always writing and reading no matter how many meals you missed.
The only thing that could slow the writing was the cold. If you had no money for heating oil and the house was so cold with winter that ice formed on the insides of the windows and you could see your breath with every exhalation, then writing became difficult. It is not easy to write when your teeth are chattering and your fingers are stiff and blue. So you would bundle up and go outside for a long brisk hike, and when your mind was warmed and racing you would turn back. If you had timed your walk properly and were energized rather than worn out you could hurry to your chair and pull off your gloves and write for a half-hour or so until you had to start blowing on your fingers again, and then you knew it was over for a while.

'Mysticus' by Randall Silvis ‘Mysticus’ is 2 novels in 1, and it’s 1 too many Sunday, December 19, 1999 By Bob Hoover, Post-Gazette Book Editor Mysticus By Randall Silvis Wolfhawk Books
Randall Silvis is one of our region’s hardest-working writers. A longtime resident of the Clarion region, he won the 1984 Drue Heinz Prize for his short-story collection “The Luckiest Man in the World.” Five novels and numerous screenplays followed, leading up to this sixth novel, his most ambitious effort and ultimately, too much of a stretch. Silvis has always been adept at creating characters who hold our interest. I’m thinking particularly of his creations in “An Occasional Hell” and “Dead Man Falling,” two murder mysteries. The three main characters of “Mysticus,” unfortunately, are a sorry lot, insane, pathetic and what’s worse, uninteresting.
