1. Masaoka Shiki International Haiku Awards
This site gives information on the substantial literary prizes given as a result of the Matsuyama Declaration of 1999. Watch here for award announcements. Maintained by the Ehime Culture Foundation, Ehime Prefecture, Japan.

Masaoka Shiki International Haiku Awards Project Masaoka Shiki International Haiku Award, which is named after the founder of modern Japanese haiku, was established based on the principles set forth in Matsuyama Declaration , adopted at Shimanamikaido '99 Haiku convention in Matsuyama held in September 1999. We hope that the establishment of this award attracts people's attention to Masaoka Shiki as a globally recognized poet and to haiku as the shortest form of world poetry throughout the world.
We are about to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Shiki's death. It is our strong hope that this establishment will be a stepping stone to the rise of awareness of haiku globally and be linked the further development of haiku in the 21st century. Ehime Culture Foundation

On both occasions the judge being Kim Everett USA Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Vicky-Lee Eves. I own a clean cattery in Adelaide, South Australia. I am a registered Birman breeder with the GCCFSA. My cats have all tested negative for feline Leukemia, feline Aids and Chlamydia. My passion for this breed began in 1988, when I adopted my first Birman, I soon became addicted to their placid temperament and decided to breed, my first litter being born in 1991. I breed Seal, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac and also the Tabby points in all these colours. All Shiki kittens are born and raised in my home with lots of love and cuddles so they are well adjusted and ready for their new homes at around 12 weeks of age. Birmans are a fantastic companion cat who love to be with you, picked up and carted around and a sitting lap is never vacant for long. Birmans have dignified kitten mentality 'til the day they die. You will have a 10-15 year old who still wants to help you make the bed, tie up your shoe-laces and chase alfoil balls. (Home made toys are the best.) Grooming a Birman is a pleasure, they make it really easy for you, the books say groom them once a week but if you groom them every day they will absolutely adore you.

Shiki and Ishite-ji
Masaoka Shiki left a large body of work although he died young and suffered a debilitating illness. Kodansha recently published his complete works in twenty-two volumes with three supplementary volumes, each of about 700 pages; among those compiling this edition were three pfofessors from Matsuyama led by Wada Shigeki, the foremost scholar in the field. The new edition was necessary because many materials had come to light since the first "complete works" was published by Kaizo publishing Company in 1930. Shiki wrote about eighteen thousand haiku. The years 1894, 1895, and 1896 were a period of vigorous activity: in 1894 he wrote 2366 haiku, in 1895, 2843 haiku, and in 1896, 3001 haiku. The 360 haiku translated by Harold J. Issacson in his book Peony Kana are only a small part of Shiki's output. Eigheen ninety-five was an eventful year for Shiki. At the beginning of the year the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 was still in progress, and Nippon , the Tokyo newspaper that Shiki worked for as haiku editor, finally yielded to his persistent requests and, despite misgivings about his poor health, sent him to China as a war correspondent. By the time he reached Cina the war was over. He spent a month sightseeing with friends, but the living quarters assigned by the army were so bad that the tuberculosis that afflicted him for years rapidly worsened. An overcrowded ship carried him to Kobe, where the doctors, expecting his imminent death, summoned his family. Somehow he survived and by August he was well enough to go to Matsuyama to convalesce.
