And then the writing came more or less by accident." Charles became reaquainted with science fiction (he was an avid reader as a teenager) after coming across a copy of Larry Niven's Ringworld . After collecting a large number of rejection slips, he sold his first story, "What Song the Sirens Sang," to Galaxy magazine. Sales to Analog followed. When the editor of Galaxy moved on to Ace Books, he asked Charles to submit a novel, which was published as Sight of Proteus in 1978. A second novel

Godspeed Treasure Island set a few centuries in the future, but complete with the entire cast. Well, Ben Gunn is a bit better looking, and there's more than one of him. The book appears to be aimed at younger readers. Because Sheffield does his job so well, I wonder if this book is the reason why he's been signed on for Tor Book's "Jupiter Novels". (You can actually download Treasure Island from the net. It is part of Project Gutenberg The Ganymede Club Higher Education (1996) - with Jerry Pournelle Convergence (1997) - the universe isn't what we thought it was, and someone has been making plans. The Billion Dollar Boy (1997) - spoiled rich brat gets marooned in the sticks where he gets to prove to everyone that he's not so bad, after all. A "Jupiter Novel", in which Sheffield tries to teach a bit about the real universe, as well as making up some fanciful scenery. As was Godspeed , this novel is based on a revered classic, as anyone who has read Captains Courageous will recognize. I read

Charles Sheffield
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Charles Sheffield November 2 ), English born physicist and science fiction author. He had been a President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and of the American Astronomical Society. His novel The Web Between the Worlds , featuring the construction of a space elevator was published almost simultanenously with Arthur C. Clarke 's novel about that very same subject, The Fountains of Paradise , a coincidence that amused both of them. For some years he was the chief scientist of Earth Satellite Corp., a company analysing satellite data. Besides many technical papers, a spin off of this was two notable and popular non-fiction books, Earthwatch and Man on Earth ; collections of false colour and enhanced images of Earth from space.

Now Charles writes hard SF, which as you know is science fiction played with the net up and with a handy portable device that will shrink any balls actually hit at the net so that they will pass through without impediment. This of course makes for a great game, in which anything is possible but everything seems real. Charles is one of the best currently working this game, extending its limits and testing the possibilities. Once he entered a utopian novel contest by submitting a dystopia, and though the book did not win the utopia contest it did win an unrelated award for literary excellence. As a result the prize changed from half a million dollars to a trip to Kansas, but I am sure Charles enjoyed the trip to Kansas very much. Since then he has made other trips to collect other awards, given for other stories that have tested boundaries and charted new ground. Once in conversation he observed to me that one could quantize SF aesthetics by creating a two-axis grid in which literary quality was charted along the x axis, while scientific understanding and originality were plotted along the y axis. We both sat stunned as we contemplated the awesome power of this graphing, its clarity such that neither one of us dared to suggest the location on the grid of even a single fellow sf writer, but only hoped that we could both hanglide out there into the northeast quadrant as far as we could go, for a few more passes. You will enjoy him as toastmaster.

record writing reading features ... contact Charles Sheffield Charles Sheffield, then a physicist, held a job that sounds pretty exciting: exploring for earth resources using satelite images. But he had been a sci-fi fan as a kid, and picked up a Ringworld book in an airport and the bug caught him up. He is vocally anti-new-wave, describing it as "occasionally well-written but mostly content-free." Having picked up some of this stuff, he thought he "could probably write something as bad as this." When his wife, Sarah, was dying of colon cancer, he took refuge in his imagination. He wrote, and wrote.
He did not meet with initial success, but Jim Baen at Galaxy started "buying" his material (although he did not actually have authority from the publisher to pay for it). This paid off later, however, when Baen went to work for Ace and wanted novels.
Sheffield was clearly an outspoken old coot, and had strong opinions about what science fiction is, what it should be, where it is going, and he delivered what some might call old-fashioned hard-sci-fi space opera. In addition to opinions on science fiction itself, there are many amusing stories of his encounters with sci fi celebrities on his lengthy and delightful autobiography
After Sarah died, Sheffield underwent a second marriage which ended in the more usual way. His third marriage was to fellow sci-fi writer
