[Page one two three ] [willself.org.uk home These parings of description are sufficient to give the lie entirely to the idea that there is any profound break between the apparent 'objectivity' of 'Junky' and the stylistic excesses of 'The Naked Lunch'. All of Burroughs's dystopian world picture is here, in this text, in embryo. The milieu of heroin addiction, as described by Burroughs, is one fraught with magical thinking. And indeed, this does correspond to the mentality of most addicts, who, because of their psychological and physical dependence on a commodity viewed by the rest of society as an unmitigated evil, find themselves habitual participants in a form of black mass. And in the drunken phantasmagoria that follow his cessation of heroin in Mexico City, Burroughs scrys out the place of dead roads, where all his fictional vehicles will terminate decades hence. 'A series of faces, hieroglyphs, distorted and leading to the final place where the human road ends, where the human form can no longer contain the crustacean horror that has grown inside it.'

"Somantic-Affective Underpinnings of Civility: Discourse Ethics and the Ethics of Embodiment" Discussant: Mitchell Aboulafia, University of Colorado, Denver 1. Hans Joas's Abstract: This paper examines the question whether the transformation of the Christian notion of "soul" into the psychological notion of "self" in James, Mead, Dewey etc. really was a story of scientific progress. While I think that the emergence of the pragmatist conception of the self, particularly in the form given to it by G. H. Mead, is one of the fundamental breakthroughs in the history of the social sciences, one can ask whether it did justice to all the semantic components of the "soul".
"Soul" referred not only to self-identity, but also to the dignity of human beings and to human immortality. Much more than Dewey and Mead, William James had an intuitive understanding of the problems resulting from the merely partial transformation of the "soul" concept. His contributions to this topic are interpreted and evaluated in this paper.

WILLIAM SAMUEL
An Invitation to Awakening to Reality "Now is the only "time" one is ever concerned with. Reader, consider this a moment, because here and now, a magnificent first fact of Truth begins to unfold. It has to do with now ; the primacy of now ; the allness of now; absoluteness of now "....... William Samuel, Lollygog Notes, 1967
The adventure of Self discovery begins with the recognition of the Hereness and Nowness of Allness or Reality. William Samuel fully explains the paradoxical, its purposes and meaning in our greater understanding of Self. William Samuel's books will lead you to this genuine Self discovery, which plumbs the depth of Being and opens new vistas, is always existent, only awaiting recognition. William's work will be a gentle guide in your own awakening to your Real Identity; a Self that is unbound, unconditioned, unrestricted Being or Reality which includes all. AWARENESS ......TRANQUILITY...... SELF-DISCOVERY ...

The Writings of William Carlos Williams
Publicity for the Self
Daniel Morris
The Writings of William Carlos Williams "is lucidly written and coherently argued. Learned, insightful, and readable, the book will provide an important perspective on Williams's evolving career and indeed the conditions in American culture in which modernism arose. Morris places Williams in the context of humanistic criticism and gives Williams's fictions a modernist perspective. His book on Williams is an important contribution to understanding that figure both as a product of his culture and as a unique voice."Daniel R. Schwarz In The Writings of William Carlos Williams, Daniel Morris examines the previously neglected fiction written throughout Williams's career to explore the extreme shift in his poetry from the impersonal early lyrics to Paterson, the ultimate celebration of the poet as modernist cultural hero. With close textual analyses of Williams's writing in a variety of genres, including lyrics, short stories, novels, essays, and his epic poem, Morris demonstrates that Williams consciously shaped his identity as a public writer able to provide an unacknowledged social group with the dignity of appearance in distinguished classes of representation such as the modern poem. By examining the style of William's writing, as well as the narrative constructions of his persona as a capable manager of American technologies, medical sciences, economic practices, and language resources, Morris shows how Williams, over a thirty-year period, created a metanarrative that presented him as a figure situated between "elite" and "popular" forms of American culture. He also analyzes reviews of Williams's books that appeared with frequency in

14. William Holman Hunt's "Oriental Mania" And His Uffizi Self-portrait
George P. Landow's essay, originally from The Art Bulletin, 1982.
http://www.victorianweb.org/painting/whh/selfportrait.html
William Holman Hunt's "Oriental Mania" and His Uffizi Self-portrait
George P. Landow , Professor of English and Art, Brown University
[This essay originally appeared in The Art Bulletin, . In fact, the painting seems to have been virtually unknown until its inclusion in the 1971 Pitti Palace exhibition "Firenze e l'lnghilterra, " despite the fact that a copy of it also hands in Hunt's London club, The Athenaeum. Although the catalogue of the exhibition reproduces the Self-portrait , it contains little information about it, and the relevant catalogue entry confines itself to general remarks about Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This little-studied work would deserve our attention if only because it is the finest self-portrait painted by an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . But the Uffizi Self-portrait also adds to our knowledge of Hunt at mid-career and has the additional importance of being the pictorial means by which the artist chose to sum up his life and art.
