elissa Scott began her science fiction career with the publication of The Game Beyond in 1984, a space operatic romp that showcased her burgeoning talents. In 1986 she earned the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, at least partly due to Five-Twelths of Heaven , which marked the start of her Silence Leigh series about an aspiring space pilot. She continued the Silence stories with Silence in Solitude and The Empress of Earth , which were collected together with Five-Twelths in The Roads of Heaven Other works by Scott include Burning Bright Dreamships and Trouble and Her Friends

Posted By: Azziz Nov 21, 2002 - 05:50 pm Melissa Scott creates some of the most elaborate virtual reality scenarios in SciFi today.
I highly recommend Dreamships and the followup book Dreaming Metal.
One of the things I love about her books is how the futuristic universes she creates makes me examine mine more closely. The scenarios she comes up with definately reflect upon issues that face us today.

Schedule Updated 1/13/2003
So who's Melissa Scott
Well. I've been a science fiction fan since I was 11, and a science fiction writer since 1984. I'm from Little Rock, Arkansas, and studied history at Harvard College and Brandeis University, where I earned my PhD. in the comparative history program with a dissertation titled "The Victory of the Ancients: Tactics, Technology, and the Use of Classical Precedent." In 1986, I won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, and won the 1996 Lambda Literary Award for Gay/Lesbian Science Fiction for Shadow Man , having won the same award in 1995 for Trouble And Her Friends . Before that, I was a three-time finalist (for Mighty Good Road Dreamships , and Burning Bright Trouble and Her Friends was also shortlisted for the Tiptree. My most recent solo novel, The Jazz , was published by Tor Books in the summer of 2000, and Lisa's and my most recent fantasy novel, Point of Dreams , a sequel to Point of Hopes , has won the 2002 Lamda Literary Award. Lisa and I were also, with Don Sakers and Thomas Atkinson , founders of the print version of WaveLengths, a review journal of gay/lesbian/bisexual/of interest science fiction and fantasy. Recently, thanks to the efforts of Rob Gates

15. Melissa Scott: SubGenre GirlPunk
A review of melissa scott's
http://www.strangewords.com/girlpunk.html
Girl Time
Melissa Scott has been one of the most consistently interesting writers on the fringe of the cyberpunk zone. Her strong female protaganists and cleanly written narratives are every bit as good as the work of the better known Pat Cadigan and Nicola Griffith; her stories always have a strong metaphorical bent that is enlightening and always enjoyable.
Scott's The Jazz [Tor, 2000] is a book that gives hope that cyberpunk is not the tired and moribund sub-genre that it has seemed recently. The book's central metaphor is not as overt as her masterly Trouble and Her Friends The Jazz rises above the genre in a way rarely seen.
One of the benchmarks of the New Science Fiction is that it considers a future in which nothing has changed; it's not that the future is a static relic of the past, but that change is an evolutionary process withoutHuge Coceptual leaps. There are no miraculous scientific breakthroughs that Change Everything, no sudden appearance of alien saviours, but a world of Taoist change that evolves, often in strange and unforseen ways. Scott violates this rule in small way, by postulating a future in which sexual orientation is no big thing, but is rather a society that has gotten over the sexual role nonsense that poisons our culture. Perhaps this makes her work a bit Utopian but it can be hoped that it is, in fact, a natural evolution.
