A Mist of Prophecies
A Mystery of Ancient Rome
Rome, 48 BC: As the forces of Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great wage a bloody civil war for supremacy in the far-flung reaches of the Empire, the city of Rome itself becomes a hotbed of intrigue, riven by espionage, greedy profiteering and bitter betrayals. One day as Gordianus the Finder is crossing the marketplace, a beautiful young seeress staggers towards him, and dies in his arms. Possibly insane, and with no memory of her past, Cassandra - like her Trojan namesake -had nevertheless been reputed to possess the true gift of prophecy. For such a gift there are many in Rome who would pay handsomely . . . or resort to murder. Cassandra had been the confidante of the rich and powerful, until she fell victim to a vicious killer.
Obsessed with Cassandra and her mystery, Gordianus begins to investigate the murder. As the citizens of Rome nervously await news of the war’s outcome and the political situation veers toward chaos, Gordianus gradually peels away the veils of secrecy that surrounded Cassandra’s life and death. What he uncovers has deadly implications, involving some of the most powerful women in Rome -and Gordianus’s pursuit of the truth not only endangers his own life, but could well affect the future of Rome itself.

To find out how easy it is to place an order, follow the spider to the Order Information Page STEVEN SAYLOR has been recommended to me many times as an historically accurate and historically interesting author. I finally found time to order the first in his series set in ancient Rome, began reading "Roman Blood;" and quickly found myself enthralled with Gordianus the Finder and life in 56 B.C. This series easily succeeds as historical fiction, without the added delight (for us) of a detective solving a crime. I find little information about Saylor, himself, except that he hails from Texas and now resides in Berkeley, Ca., and that he is a writer of short stories and other fiction, as well as this excellent Roman mystery series which debuted in 1990.

Roman Blood - $5.99
Arms of Nemesis - $5.99
Catalina's Riddle - $5.99
This is the first of this series that seemed lacking in suspense, and, indeed, lacking a plot; very difficult to continue reading, though I did continue, to find only the last 50 pages worth the trip. Gordianus is now 48 and complaining throughout the book of the aches and pains of aging. He has moved to a farm in the country (apparently every Roman's dream) with his wife and two younger children, while his older son, Eco, has taken over the house and his profession in the city. Cicero, wealthy, influential and power-mad, puts pressure on Gordianus to give occasional shelter to his rival, Catilina, so that Cicero may keep tabs on his whereabouts. Little happens of any interest in the mystery mode until that last 50 pages, though there is much amusing information on life and politics in Rome and the countryside. I would hope that someone new to the series would not start with this entry!

roma sub rosa Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Saylor writes stories of the mean streets, of political intrigue, sex scandals, malfeasance, dishonest lawyers, corrupt judges, and rioting in the streets. His sleuth is a man of little family background named Gordianus the Finder. Oh, yesthey are all set in ancient Rome, just before the Imperial Age, and most of the principal characters are historical figures. The political intrigues, scandals, and rioting are as reported by various classical authors, from Cicero (often on-stage in his own right) on down. Think of it as ancient Roman True Crime. The books should definitely be read in order, as each builds on its predecessors, in terms of both Roman History and Gordianus' life. The House of the Vestals is a collection of short stories. Those who like Gordianus might also enjoy Lindsey Davis ' somewhat lighter-hearted tales of informer Marcus Didius Falco, set a century or so later in the days of Emperor Vespasian.

17. Austin Chronicle: Author Literatus: Steven Saylor
Steven Saylor sets his novels in ancient Rome, but has quite a few modern ideasabout the state of the author in the contemporary publsihing climate.
http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/vol18/issue44/books.saylor.html
Steven Saylor
Author Literatus
by Clay Smith Steven Saylor has so effectively created an alternate fictional universe in his Roma Sub Rosa series which consists so far of seven novels about the end of the Roman republic that fans of his novels may be tempted to imagine that every day the author wakes, dons a toga, opens dense historical texts about ancient Rome in the original Latin, and plucks from them those little nuggets of believability historical details that he uses to transport readers to the scene of the crime. In actuality, Saylor, who grew up in Goldthwaite, Texas, graduated from the University of Texas in 1978, and now divides his time between Austin and Berkeley, California, was not a Latin major but a history major who specialized in Roman history. He says he sets his novels in ancient Rome because of a "childhood fascination" that has developed into an "adult preoccupation." "It's one of those things that has sort of kept pace with my own sensibilities all through the years," Saylor says. "When I was a child, I had Roman toys. When I was a boy, I went to Roman movies. When I was in college, I studied Roman history, and now I find it this really fascinating sort of alternative world to our own. It's a lot like our world but it's different enough that it's a good place to escape to." It's important to note that when Saylor says that his books are "a good place to escape to," he's referring to them as an escape for his readers
