Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Marjorie Kinnan was born August 8, 1896, in Washington, D.C. A writer from an early age, in 1907, Marjorie received a $2.00 prize for a story published in the Washington Post. Marjorie's father died in 1913, when she was seventeen years old. A year later, after her graduation from high school, Marjorie moved to Wisconsin with her mother and younger brother. She attended the University of Wisconsin where she was a member of the women's honor society, the drama society, and the Delta Gamma Sorority. In 1918, Marjorie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. A year after graduating, Marjorie married Charles Rawlings, also a writer. The couple moved to Rochester, NY, where they both worked as journalists for various newspapers. In 1928, the Rawlings purchased a 72-acre orange grove near Hawthorne, Florida, aptly named Cross Creek because it lay nestled between Orange Lake and Lochloosa Lake. 1933 Ms. Rawlings divorced Charles Rawlings, but was so drawn to the natural, untamed landscape and the simplicity of the rural lifestyle, that she continued to live at Cross Creek on and off for the rest of her life. In 1941 Marjorie Rawlings married Norton Baskin, a hotel owner from St. Augustine, Florida, to whom she remained married until her death in 1953.

Melissa Hughes' dialect and reading sounds just as though she were telling the stories herself. Highly recommended." Library Journal "Thanks to Audio Bookshelf for publishing this third book in the series Voices: A Treasury of Regional American Fiction." -AudioFile "The stories as a group are realistic, psychologically accurate and politically aware: many focus on the issues of race and gender in a way that makes them ahead of their time." -Kliatt "The stories are greatly enhanced by Hughes, who has an exceptional gift for accents."

Cross Creek, Florida 32640
"Cross Creek is a bend in a country road, by land, and the flowing of Lochloosa Lake into Orange Lake, by water. We are four miles west of the small village of Island Grove, nine miles east of a turpentine still, and on the other sides we do not count distance at all, for the two lakes and the broad marshes create an infinite space between us and the horizon." The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park has been officially listed on the National Register of Historic Sites since 1970. It is a microcosm of Florida farmland, marshland and succeeding hammock and represents a history, culture and architecture that typifies a rural Florida that has all but vanished. Eight acres of the historic site have been managed by DEP's Division of Recreation and parks since 1970. The remaining 60 acres of the original homestead are managed by Alachua County Parks and the University of Florida Foundation. Citizens Support Organizations are non-profit corporations given special status by Florida law that make it possible for you to support your favorite state parks. In these times of budget shortages CSOs are critical for providing much needed funds and manpower.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Writing Profile Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, like many authors who write about a specific environment, developed a writing style often referred to as local color or regional writing. Below is a description of these categories of writing. See if you can name other authors who use these writing styles. Local Color Authors who use this style of writing often create characters based in a small, distinct region. These characters usually have a regional dialect and are presented as stereotypes in a generally humorous and sympathetic fashion. Other common themes/features found in local color writing are the goodness and earthiness of plain country folk and the slow disappearance of rural culture in an urban, industrialized society. Local color writers tend to present the exterior view of the characters and their situations. Some of these writers include Mark Twain, Joel Chandler Harris and Sarah Orne Jewett. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ books T he Yearling and The Secret River are often categorized as local color writing.

So ends the book, Cross Creek , written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Cross Creek still belongs to time. Thanks to the University of Florida Foundation, the efforts of supporters and the Florida Parks Department, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Site is available to thousands of visitors each year. Accompanied by her husband, Charles (Chuck) Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings first set her eyes upon Cross Creek in 1928. She was fascinated with its remoteness, wildness, simplicity of life and its Florida Crackers. She immediately felt a sense of place. It touched all her senses. This was home. After returning north to put a close to her life there, Chuck's two brothers (who lived in North Central Florida) found the perfect spot in Cross Creek, so named because it lay between the Lochloosa Lake and Orange Lake.
