The Amazing Randisi
A couple of months ago, I received a very polite email from author Robert J. Randisi . It read "Found your site and enjoyed it" (woohoo!) "but was disappointed to see that I was not in your list of authors." (doh!) I quickly rectified that omission, and Mr. Randisi (or "Bob", as he's called by people who actually know him) graciously agreed to an email interview. So, without further ado... Bleeker Books: What writers did you read when you were growing up? What were the influences on your writing? How did you become such a big fan of PI fiction? Robert J. Randisi: I read all of the classic mystery writers in my teens: Hammett Chandler , Christie, Sayers, Carr, Queen. I became a P.I. fan from watching the Warner bros. P.I. series of the 50'sSunset Strip, Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye and Bourbon Street Beat. The biggest influence on my becoming a P.I. writers, though, goes to Paul Newman, Lew Archer and Ross Macdonald . When I was 15 I saw Paul Newman in Harper . After the movie I went out and got Macdonald's The Moving Target on which the film was based and discovered that "Harper" was actually "Lew Archer," and I was hooked. I read all of Macdonald, and then kept reading P.I. fiction

The "trial room" has been described by cops as the place where "the department tries its best to lower the boom on some dumb cop who was just trying to do his job." On this particular occasion, the hearing involved Jonas Quartermain, a not-so-dumb sergeant of detectives. "Sergeant Quartermain? Have you anything to say before I give my decision in this case?" asked the trial commissioner. He was a big-bellied-what they liked to call "well-fed"-desk jockey of about fifty-five who hadn't seen the street in the line of duty since Eisenhower was president. He was also a full inspector. Quartermain, a large, big-boned man of thirty-five, a veteran of twelve years in the department, knew, when he rose from his chair what the decision would be. It didn't matter that a court of law had found him innocent of any ''willful, criminal act." In the eyes of the department, that did not make him innocent. A cop was innocent only when it decided you were innocent-and vice versa. So, knowing full well what the trial commissioner's decision would be, Quartermain knew he had nothing to lose by speaking his mind.

"Don't turn on the light." "Oh, Jonas," she whispered when she opened the door. If she hadn't caught him he would have fallen. He was tall, but, surprisingly, not very heavy. She was a big girl and that helped. She half carried, half dragged him to her bed and let him drop on it. When he groaned, she apologized. "'S'alright," he told her. "I'm all right." She went to the bathroom, came back with a damp cloth, and began cleaning him up. "Didn't you even fight back? I know you, you'd have to fight back." "No," he croaked. "No, couldn’t..." "All right, shut up and let me clean you. I should call a doctor." He started to protest, but she cut him off. "Don't worry, I won't. I'm just saying what I should do-if I were sane." Shaking her head she said, half to herself, "You and your crazy ideas." Telly Jennings, tall, copper-haired, and thirty, was a prostitute. She had met Quartermain five years back when he was in plainclothes working the Times Square area. He'd busted her but they had hit it off anyway and become good friends. During those five years she had become used to his crazy ideas, but this, she thought, was the craziest of them all. And she was crazy for letting him talk her into helping him-not that he'd had to do that much talking. He'd come running too many times in the past to help her out; she couldn't turn him down the first time he ever asked for something.

The Offer by Robert J. Randisi (Five Star, $25.95, V) ISBN 0-7862-4865-3 Assistant museum curator Robin Lobianco has uncharacteristically participated in a ménage a trois with Vince and Amy Wheaton. Now her shame after the incident has her avoiding the young couple, which is why she is astounded when the couple professes their love for her and invite her to move in. Robin declines the offer and informs Vince and Amy in no uncertain terms that she no longer wishes to be associated with them. The next day Robin begins to receive bizarre greeting cards and notices that Vince and Amy have begun stalking her. Robin is not sure how public she wants to go with her experiences, but she is spooked and calls the St. Louis police who dispatch Detective Jack Jones. Jones is an aging detective who has lost three partners recently, and has married a stripper half his age. Jones has been on limited duty, but this assignment seems to be a good one for him to get back into things. Jones, for some reason, is taken with Robin and is determined to help her. He begins probing the couple and finds similarities to cases in Omaha. Not having anything specific to arrest the couple on, Jones watches and waits. An attack on Robin’s estranged husband and two deaths cause Jones to become very vigilant, as he is sure Robin will be the next target.

Thomas Dunne Books, St. Martin's Press (Hardcover), ISBN 0-312-24179-8
The Great Randisi, a.k.a. Robert J. Randisi, founder of the Private Eye Writers of America and co-founder of Mystery Scene Magazine , cops to a l-o-n-g list of published novels. At last count, he could boast 300 books to his credit, 270 of them westerns. This amazing quantity of writing may explain the lack of factual detail in his procedural mystery, Blood on the Arch , the latest in his Joe Keough mystery series. Certainly anyone that prolific must practice time management. Forget the research; focus on storytelling. Randisi designs a suspenseful, fast-paced, creative police puzzler that forces the reader hold onto his coat tails as he speeds them along the trail of murder and deception. Detective Joe Keough of the St. Louis Police Department finds himself looking into the face of a friend when he examines the victim of a brutal murder. Mark Drucker, a stranger turned mentor who gave Keough a fresh start in St. Louis, lies dead bludgeoned. Drucker's blood stains the Arch, the Gateway to the West, and Keough vows to find the killer. But a conspiracy of greedy people stand between him and the truth. Keough quickly discovers the mystery begins with the victim. How could Drucker's wife OK, almost ex-wife not know the location of his office or his new address? How could civic and political leaders work closely with Drucker on real estate development deals and not know what he did for a living? Keough and readers stumble over these questions.

Robert J. Randisi: East of the Arch
Thomas Dunne Books (Hardcover), ISBN 0-312-28398-9
The bodies of two pregnant women, their nearly full-term babies ripped from their wombs, surface in East St. Louis. To assist the local police in their investigation, the mayor of St. Louis offers the services of Detective Joe Keough. Paired with Marc Jeter, a talented but young detective from the East St. Louis police force, Keough makes little headway at first. Along the way, Keough also becomes embroiled in a separate homicide investigation as the primary suspect. Brady, young boy in the foster care system from a previous case, wants to speak to Joe. Their talk reveals spousal abuse in the house of the Logans, the couple that wants to adopt the boy. Just hours after Keough speaks with the man, Michael Logan dies from a single shot to the head in a parking lot. So Keough must work at solving two cases, one which appears more and more like the work of a serial killer. A third formerly pregnant corpse surfaces, and her profession and proximity to the killer yield good clues. Keough and Jeter pinpoint their suspect, but lack sufficient evidence to arrest him, let alone charge him. But the mayor of East St. Louis refuses to take no for an answer and orders the man brought in, angering Keough. Now justice may never be served…and the killer's next victim already has vanished.

Introduction
by Robert J. Randisi
You arehopefullyholding in your hand the next step in a new medium: original stories written for electronic publishing. This site, however, takes this medium even one step further. You are actually meant to read these stories on a Handheld Computer. Now, I know little about computers beyond what I need to know to generate my own manuscripts. But I'm not here to critique this site, I'm here to introduce these stories. (At least, I think that's what I'm here to do.) You see, as little as I know about computers and web sites, I know quite a bit about writing, and what HendHeldCrime is presenting here, in its debut, are four quite well written, clever little yarns. If these stories are any indication of what's to come, this site will be presenting quality mystery fiction in what is meant to beand what I am sure will bean easy to read format. In "Slightly Tarnished Armor," Chris Mills presents us with a story in his series featuring his P.I. Matthew Dain. Hugh Lessig's marvelously titled "Black Book, White Deaths," features newspaperman Picasso Smith, and while I'm not sure whether or not Mr. Smith is a series character, I can only hope that he is. J. Michael Blue's "Drafting for Charlie," is a wicked little Airport caper story. And "X's for Eyes," by Victor Gischler is a clever and funny story about the odd breakup of a relationship. There you have them, four quite different stories that have a couple of things in common. They are well told and well written, and they are presented on HandheldCrime for your pleasure.

Editors' Welcome
4 July 2000
Welcome to the first issue of HandHeldCrime. When we started work on this publication, we had a few goals in mind. We wanted to build a magazine around quality genre fiction; we wanted to work with established websites to bring select fiction to users of handheld computers; and we wanted to have fun. Obviously, the final decision on the magazine itself will be up to you, the readers and subscribers, and we fully expect to make some changes along the way. But we can say, right now and with no qualifications, that we've had a great time putting this first issue together. Working with authors and site owners who really care about crime fiction has been a wonderful experience. They've had excellent suggestions and thoughts on the enterprise from the beginning, and they have been genuinely excited about the project. We look forward to working with them again, as well as others like them. We also look forward to hearing from you, our readers. Please let us know what you like and don't like, as well as any suggestions you have for HandHeldCrime. If you had problems subscribing to or downloading this issue, let us know so that we can fix them or make it easier. And we would appreciate your help in spreading the word about HandHeldCrime to others who may be interested. One thing you'll notice is that this issue is hardboiled in tone and content. There are broken relationships, romantics disguised as cynics, and weapons that range from guns to fountain pens. As HandHeldCrime grows, we expect to bring you quality fiction from other mystery subgenres as well as features and reviews.
