Allan Ramsay
Poet and bookseller
Wig-maker, bookseller, poet, and father of Allan Ramsay the painter, Allan
Ramsay senior is best remembered for his pastoral ballad-opera "The Gentle Shepherd" (1725) and his compilations of Scots poems "The Ever Green"
(2 volumes, Edinburgh: 1724) and Scots songs"The Tea-Table Miscellany"
(3 volumes, Edinburgh: 1724-27). Born in Leadhills, Lanarkshire and educated at the village school in Crawford, Ramsay moved to Edinburgh in 1701 when his widowed mother apprenticed him
to an Edinburgh wig-maker. While still a wig-maker he became known as a poet, issuing his first poems as broadside sheets which were sold on the street:
children were regularly sent out with a penny to buy 'Mr Ramsay's latest piece'.
He abandoned wig-making for bookselling in about 1716, first in the High Street, Edinburgh and later in the Luckenbooths which surrounded the High Kirk of St Giles and the Tolbooth.

Allan Ramsay, Senior (1686-1758)
Born on October 15, 1686 in Leadhills in Lanarkshire, Allan Ramsay began his career as a wig maker. But he also collected and rewrote a large collection of old Scottish songs and ballads which were published in 1724. The following year he published "The Gentle Shepherd" a pastoral collection which gave a vivid description of rural scenery. This would later form the basis of John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera." His success in this field encouraged him to open a number of bookseller's shops and a library at the Luckenbooth in Edinburgh's High Street, one of the first in Britain. Many of the literary figures of the day would congregate there. He also set up a theatre (which was suppressed by the Edinburgh magistrates) and an auction house. He built a house on Castle Hill, beside Edinburgh Castle - at the current location of Ramsay Gardens , named after him. He died on January 7, 1758. While he is not regarded as a great poet, his vein of "return to nature" had an influence on both Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott

67. Allan Ramsay And The Search For Horace's Villa
allan ramsay and the Search for Horace's Villa, edited by Bernard D. Frischer andIain Gordon Brown with contributions by Bernard Frischer, Iain Gordon Brown
http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/humnet/classics/faculty/frischer/RamsaySearch.html
Summary of: Allan Ramsay and the Search for Horace's Villa, edited by Bernard D. Frischer and Iain Gordon Brown with contributions by Bernard Frischer, Iain Gordon Brown, Patricia R. Andrew, John Dixon Hunt and Martin Goalen (Ashgate, London, 2001). ISBN 07546 0004 1. Published with the assistance of the Getty Grant Program. The Sabine Villa of the Roman poet Horace, celebrated in his verse as an arcadia of rural simplicity and contentment, was a place embedded in the Western consciousness both as an ideal and as an actual, physical site. The location of the villa was fixed by seventeenth-century scholraship as lying most probably in the hills north-east of Tivoli. For the British in particular the Sabine farm had a special resonance, and by the age of the Grand Tour its general district came to be visited by enterprising travellers. Foremost among these was the great Scottish portrait painter Allan Ramsay, who was distinguished also as a classical scholar, archaeologist and man of letters. Ramsay's account of the villa in its landscape - both actual and 'literary' - is published here for the first time. Preceding the text are eight studies by experts on Horace's Villa, Ramsay, and the other topics addressed by Ramsay's text.

Allan Ramsay
Allan Ramsay was the court painter of George III. Born in 1713 in Edinburgh, Ramsay studied painting in Rome as a young man and, upon his return to Britain in 1738, quickly became one of London's most successful portraitists. He was appointed to the court of George III in 1761. In his later life, Ramsay became an essayist, writing on such disparate topics as the English constitution, the American Revolution, and Latin meter. From 1777 to 1784 he worked on a treatise entitled, An Enquiry into the Situation and Circumstances of Horace's Sabine Villa Written during travels through Italy in the years 1775, 76, and 77 . Ramsay did not live to publish the text, but two manuscripts are preserved in Edinburgh. Ramsay's interest in Horace reflects a longstanding interest in the Roman poet which he shared with his father (also called Allan Ramsay), one of Scotland's most famous poets. Ramsay is seen at the left in a self-portrait dating from 1776. Table of

Allan Ramsay
Allan Ramsay, Scottish portrait painter, was the eldest son of the poet Allan Ramsay (1685-1758). He was trained in Italy, and worked first in Edinburgh. From 1757, when he painted his first portrait of George III, then Prince of Wales, Ramsay was increasingly in demand as a royal portraitist. In 1762, he settled in London, and in 1767 was appointed portrait painter to George III.
Though this appointment provided generous and steady income, it brought Ramsay to the decline of his artistic individuality. All his best works were fulfilled before the royal appointment. His style used to be simple and delicate, he especially excelled in portraits of women. As he had a lot of commissions for royal portraits, he had to drop the rest of his practice. Also his art weakened, the painting became like a mechanical process for him, until an accident to his arm in 1773 prevented him from painting altogether.
