Elizabeth Arnold Poe died in Richmond on December 8, 1811, and Edgar was taken into the family of John Allan, a member of the firm of Ellis and Allan, tobacco-merchants. Poe's mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, died in Richmond on December 8, 1811. Moldavia, P oe's last home in Richmond located at Fifth and Main Streets. John Allan bought the house in 1825, and Edgar lived there before entering the University of Virginia in 1826. In Boston on May 26, 1827, Poe enlisted in The United States Army as a private using the name Edgar A. Perry. After two years of service, during which he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant-major, he secured, with Mr. Allan's aid, a discharge from the Army and went to Baltimore. He lived there with his aunt, Mrs. Maria Poe Clemm, on the small amounts of money sent by Mr. Allan until he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Meanwhile, Poe published a second book of poetry in 1829: Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems. After another quarrel with Allan (who had married a second wife in 1830), Poe no longer received aid from his foster father. Poe then took the only method of release from the Academy, and got himself dismissed on March 6, 1831.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) One the greatest and unhappiest of American poets, a master of the horror tale, patron saint to the practitioners of the detective story. Poe's stormy personal life postponed honest evaluation of his work in the United States - first he gained critical acclaim in France and England. His reputation in America was relatively slight until the French-influenced writers like Ambroce Bierce, Robert W. Chambers, and representatives of the Lovecraft school secured his place in the literary hall of fame. "The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends and where the other begins?" (from The Premature Burial Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who were itinerant actors. His father David Poe Jr. died probably in 1810 and his mother Elizabeth Hopkins Poe in 1811, leaving three children, of whom William died young and Rosalie ultimately lost her mind. Edgar was taken into the home of a Richmond merchant John Allan and brought up partly in England (1815-20), where he attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. Never legally adopted, Poe took Allan's name for his middle name. Poe attended the University of Virginia (1826), but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts. This led to quarrel with Allan, who later disowned him. In 1827 Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under assumed name and age. He was sent to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, which provided settings for 'The Gold Bug' (1843) and 'The Balloon Hoax' (1844). In 1830 Poe entered West Point and was dishonorably discharged next year, for intentional neglect of his duties - apparently as a result of his own determination to be released.

Best known for his poems and short fiction, Edgar Allan Poe deserves more credit than any other writer for the transformation of the short story from anecdote to art. He virtually created the detective story and perfected the psychological thriller. He also produced some of the most influential literary criticism of his timeimportant theoretical statements on poetry and the short storyand has had a worldwide influence on literature. Poe's parents were touring actors; both died before he was 3 years old, and he was taken into the home of John Allan, a prosperous merchant in Richmond, Va., and baptized Edgar Allan Poe. His childhood was uneventful, although he studied (1815-20) for 5 years in England. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia but stayed for only a year. Although a good student, he ran up large gambling debts that Allan refused to pay. Allan prevented his return to the university and broke off Poe's engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster, his Richmond sweetheart. Lacking any means of support, Poe enlisted in the army. He had, however, already written and printed (at his own expense) his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), verses written in the manner of Byron.

Another post-Gothic writer who needs no introduction...
... or so I used to think, but every time I teach a Poe tale I hear students talk about what a drug-addled drunken psychopath he was. And since none of that is true, ol' Edgar does wrong thing to do; some scholars have speculated that Poe would deliberately (or at least "subconsciously deliberately") get drunk at high-stress moments in his life precisely in order to cause a plan or project to fail, such as the time he showed up drunk at the house of a woman with whom he was on the verge of marriage, conveniently ending the engagement. Not that Poe didn't want to marry her so much as he was unable to marry her, if what many scholars say about Poe and women is true.
What do they say? Well, many trace his difficulties to his early abandonment by his parents, and his "pursuit" of various women was more a pursuit of the mother-imago (to get Jungian for a second) than of the woman herself, but when he came to the verge of marriage, well, not even Oedipus wanted to marry his mom. Thus it is that Poe ended up marrying his thirteen-year-old cousin, the aptly named Virginia (and this at a time when marrying one's cousin was a reasonably legitimate thing to do); she was already ill, thus conveniently rendering consummation of the marriage unlikely if not impossible. The Poe Society of Baltimore website has more on Poe's issues with drugs and alcohol
Is that enough of an intro? No, it's really just an attempt to dispel a couple of the more common myths; Poe's contribution to the Gothic tradition, and to its evolution away from an "exterior," sensationalized terror-trip into a more psychological experience, is too substantial and too significant to be fully engaged here.

EDGAR ALLAN POE Writer In the late 1820s and early 1830's Edgar Allan Poe was a poet and a soldier in the U.S. Army. He was dismissed from West Point and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he began writing prose. Throughout the 1830s and 1840s Poe worked on various magazines in Richmond, Philadelphia and New York, and also published short stories and poems, including "The Purloined Letter" and "The Raven." In 1849 Poe died under mysterious circumstances after visiting Virginia to lecture. He was found on the street in Baltimore and taken unconcious to a local hospital, where he died.
Extra credit : Baltimore's football team, the Ravens, is named in whimsical tribute to Poe's famous poem... Since the 100th anniversary of Poe's death in 1949, an anonymous visitor has come to Poe's grave each year on the writer's birthday, leaving three roses and a bottle of cognac. By tradition no one attempts to follow the "Poe Toaster" and his identity remains unknown. However, it is presumed others have taken over for the original visitor.

A collection of poems by Poe.
    http://www.webterrace.com/poe
Edgar Allan Poe, critic, mystery and short story writer, but most importantly a poet, all these titles help to describe the multitalented genius that is Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe lived only 40 short years (1809-1849), yet his body of work is as rich a literary legacy as any published author. Poe was born into an acting family, both mother and father were actors, but their tragic death in 1812, left young Edgar to be raised by his Godfather John Allan, a wealthy merchant in Richmond Virginia. Poe was educated abroad and later at the University of Virginia. His relationship with his Godfather was not always an easy one; arguments over Edgar's gambling eventually led to a parting of ways and a tour of duty in the army for Poe due to financial necessity. There was a reconciliation with John Allan, only to have the relationship chill again once John Allan remarried. Tamerlane and other poems (1827) was Edgar Allen Poe's first published literary work, followed by two other works a few years later. These early works were not met with the critical acclaim that would later be bestowed upon him. He moved to Baltimore to live with his Aunt Clemm and her daughter Virginia. He secured a job as editor of the, Southern Literary Messenger
