Marge Piercy (1936- ) Marge Piercy is an American novelist, essayist, and poet best known for fiction with a feminist slant. Her writing stems from a political commitment that began in the 1960s in the Vietnam anti-war movement. Her early novels, such as "Small Changes"(1973), have been used as historical documents in women's studies'courses. Often her protagonists, like Connie in "Woman on the Edge of Time"(1976), are women trying to establish some control over worlds that are increasingly restrictive. Her latest novel, "He, She, and It" , was published in 1991. Like her novels, her poetrysuch as "The Moon Is Always Female"(1980) explores feminism and feminity.

In using there are always two.
The manipulator dances with a partner who cons herself.
There are lies that glow so brightly we consent
to give a finger and then an arm
to let them burn.
I was dazzled by the crowd where everyone called my name.
Now I stand out side the funhouse exit, down the slide
reading my guidebook of Marx in Esperanto
and if I don't know anymore which way means forward
down is where my head is, next to my feet with a pocketful of words and plastic tokens. Form follows function, says the organizer and turns himself into a paperclip, into a vacuum cleaner, into a machinegun.

Howdy, strangers.
Woman on the Edge of Time is one of my favorite books, as well.
Herland is also fascinating, partly because it was written quite a few
years ago and gender differences were expressed in other ways so they
become clearer to me than they might have been to Charlotte Perkins
Gilman.
the part in Piercy's book that really sticks in my mind is the
part when they take the adolescent who is ready to become an adult out to
the middle of the wilderness and drop her off for a week or two. Spending time in the wilderness and keeping yourself alive gives one a larger world view, I think. hmmm... - laura

THE PROMOTION

My friend has become an administrator.
First they welded his clothes
to his newly rigid body
so he would never even
in the shower stand naked.
Then he went on a pompous fast,
nothing but stuffed derma,
hot air and those little plastic
worms used for packing, defatted lunch meats, white bread. His brain was scraped, then shellacked against mildew: thermostat turned down for efficiency, adrenals replaced by reaction meters, poll results flashed every minute on his retina. Alert to every fluctuation in the atmosphere of opinion, ready to jetison ideas at the first turbulence, he is ready to take the helm and steer the course of the giant hot air balloon of destiny, taking an oath he will never deflate or look down. Marge Piercy is the author of twelve collections of poetry, and twelve novels. Her book of craft essays, Parti-Colored Blocks For A Quilt, is part of the Poets on Poetry Series of the University of Michigan Press. Her novel, won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Science Fiction published in the United Kingdom in 1992 under the title , Body Of Glass.

Marge Piercy is one of America's leading feminist literary figures, a rare author who is unafraid to create novels and poetry with a political mission. "Almost alone among her American contemporaries, Marge Piercy is a radical and a writer simultaneously. . ." New York Times Small Changes (1973), which she wrote to serve as the fictional equivalent of a consciousness-raising group for women who had yet to be liberated. "one of the first [books] to explore the variety of lifestyles that women are adopting in order to give meaning to their personal and political lives." New Republic Piercy followed Small Changes with the science fiction novel, Woman on the Edge of Time (1976) a classic of feminist literature and a book that Piercy regards as her personal favorite. The novel's protagonist is a woman confined to a mental hospital who periodically travels into a Utopian future of gender equality. "Stunning. . .marvelous and compelling."

Piercy, Marge Cold Head, Cold Heart
Genre Poem Keywords Disease and Health Ordinary Life Patient Experience Suffering Summary This is a comic poem in which the narrator describes the experience of having a head cold. Commentary More comic than complex, this poem might work best as an exercise in reminding physicians of the pain of even the most simple of complaints. It also provides an example of poetic imagery for beginning poets or writers. Piercy's metaphors are straightforward but surprising.
