Press Release - June 28, 2001
Marilyn Nelson Named State Poet Laureate
The Connecticut Commission on the Arts announced that it has named Marilyn Nelson, of Storrs, as Poet Laureate for the State of Connecticut. Nelson was recommended to the Commission by a panel of five distinguished literary professionals who considered several dozen nominations of poets submitted by the public. She will serve a five-year term in the honorary position, which was created by the General Assembly to recognize a Connecticut poet of the highest distinction. She succeeds Leo Connellan, who passed away in February, two months shy of completing his term, and his predecessor, James Merrill. Marilyn Nelson is the author of six books of poetry, two children's collections, and several chapbooks. Her work has also appeared in numerous anthologies and literary collections. She has been described as "a poet of stunning power, able to bring alive the most rarified and subtle of experiences." "Marilyn Nelson's presence in Connecticut has greatly enriched the state," said Susan Holmes, Artistic Programs Director at the University of Connecticut, who nominated Nelson for Poet Laureate. "She is a vital American voice speaking of our past and present from her multiple perspectives of daughter, mother, wife, artist, teacher, friend and African-American. Her teaching and support of young writers has been exceptional, and her readings of her work are not only wonderfully entertaining, but memorable and inspiring."

Marilyn Carlson Nelson: Travel Titan
When MARILYN CARLSON NELSON, CEO of Carlson Cos., took over the family business last March, she inherited an empire that had been ruled by her demanding and domineering father for six decades. Curtis Carlson, who still has 100% voting control of the company, hasn't always agreed with her point of view, but this year Nelson has used a mixture of brains and charm to keep dad satisfied and make the corner office her own. Under Nelson, 58, Minneapolis-based Carlson has launched a series of acquisitions and joint ventures, increasing the company's worldwide travel-agency business by 200%. And Nelson, who has overseen corporate expansion since 1996, has built a remarkably loyal employee base at the privately owned $7 billion company. A dynamic and inspirational speaker, she has liberalized benefits, instituted day-care and profit-sharing plans, sometimes over her father's objections, and brought in important managers from outside the company. Nelson's biggest coup this year was merging with Britian's Thomas Cook Group, and combining with its 450 travel offices in the United Kingdom and its small British airline. A French speaker who studied at the Sorbonne, in Paris, Nelson has easily expanded operations in Europe. But her empire-building hasn't stopped there. She's commissioning luxury cruise ships and expanding the company's hotel franchises, including its Radisson Hotels. She's also trying to prepare son Curtis Nelson to take over the company someday.

Marilyn Nelson's Labyrinth
The Internet strikes me as the realization of Jorge Luis Borges' vision : a garden of forking paths, an infinitely expanding library, a world-sized map of the world, a labyrinth . I hope you enjoy wandering around in my little section of it. (I hope the tiger doesn't get you!) I teach in the English Department at the University of Connecticut . My regular courses are creative writing (poetry), a poetry genre course, Aframerican and American Ethnic Literature. In Spring, 2000, I taught a course on Poetry and Meditation at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I write poems. My third book won the Annisfield-Wolf Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award; my fifth book was a finalist for the National Book Award, the PEN/Winship Award, and the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, and won the 1999 Poets' Prize; my sixth book, Carver: A Life in Poems (click on my name), publis hed by Front Street Books, won the Boston Globe/Hornbook Award, was a finalist for the National Book Award, was a Newbery Honor Book, a Coretta Scott King Honor book, and won the Flora Stieglitz Straus Award. In 2002 I became the Poet Laureate of the State of Connecticut.

The Plotinus Suite
I. No Jazz
Hard sex. The silken, honeyed twang of parting.
No effing jazz. A violin, a tad too white.
Rough sex. More sex.
Okay, then: radio silence.
Silence, longing. Never his scent
in my nostrils, his tongue
tasting mine, his smooth...Ah, it comes:
Those to whom heaven-passion
is unknown may only guess at it
by the passions of the earth.

Abba Jacob watched a porn film for a few minutes once, in a monastery on midnight TV. It was sad, he said; they looked so lonely.
II. Behind A Descartes Bumpersticker
...therefore I am? that's not it either. I love? Could be. A slightly pregnant pause. How love? And whom? Your faces file in, quietly take seats, listen. My hoping eyes scour the horizon. Where is he whom my essence it is to love? Our true beloved is elsewhere. Abba J says there's a little door in the heart behind which he is hidden. Even if it bears someone's name, on a whiff through the keyhole catch the faint spring fragrance of longing...
