CVVFA Protecting Emergency Responders on the Highways White Paper Standard Operating Procedures Safe Positioning While Operating in or Near Moving Traffic "Move-Over" Laws By State Model "Move Over" Act Specials to ResponderSafety: Feature stories and Special Pieces Contact Us Last Updated: Thursday, May 9 - 4PM News Troopers Dodge More Cars Than Bullets Courtesy of Salt Lake Tribune With a glance in the rear-view mirror, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Kevin Elmer knew in an instant the SUV was going to hit him. Parked and writing a warning to a driver in the emergency lane of Interstate 15 near Spanish Fork on Saturday night, Elmer saw the vehicle hurtling full-speed at him. "I turned square in my seat, held onto the steering wheel and put my head against the seat," Elmer, 48, said Tuesday, his first day home from the hospital after sustaining a fractured right scapula and a broken vertebra, among other injuries. The SUV, its driver apparently asleep, slammed into Elmer's cruiser and knocked it into the truck he had stopped. The cruiser's frame nearly buckled. Neither the SUV driver nor the woman Elmer had stopped were seriously injured.

Directed by Robert Benton.
With
Paul Newman as Harry Ross,
Susan Sarandon as Catherine Ames,
Gene Hackman as Jack Ames,
Stockard Channing as Verna,
James Garner as Raymond Hope,
Reese Witherspoon as Mel Ames,
Liev Schreiber as Jeff Willis,
Margo Martindale as Gloria Lamar,
M. Emmet Walsh as Lester Ivar. Screenplay by Robert Benton and Richard Russo. Cinematography by Piotr Sobocinski. Production Design by David Gropman. Music by Elmer Bernstein. Harry Ross is a retired policeman turned PI. He is hired by movie actors Jack and Catherine Ames to bring back their 17 year old daughter, Mel, who has run away. Harry finds Mel in Mexico. Her boyfriend Jeff gets tough when Harry tries to lead Mel away, and while Harry is expertly humiliating him, Mel takes Harry's gun away and more or less accidentally shoots him. The wound isn't serious, except to the dignity and the life prospects of all concerned. Jack and Catherine feel bad about this happening to Harry and they invite him to come and live in the apartment above their garage. Harry and Jack become best friends, as do Harry and Catherine in a different way. The two men spend their time playing gin rummy, and all three have fun joking that Harry is unsuccessfully trying to get into bed with Catherine. Mel, who is despondent and sullen about having to come back home, is even more despondent and sullen about having Harry around all the time.

He was the volunteer manager of the cemetery and he made markers for the graves without tombstones. He was also very interested in genealogy, so he would be pleased that this information can now help others through the internet. Ole' Elmer!
Paul Drescher was able to stop in at Apache Sales Corp. in August of 2000 to chat with Ole' Elmer and get his story. Ole' Elmer has been working with Apaches for over 35 years, and continues to fabricate and sell Apache parts to this day! Paul took a series of photographs with his digital camera, and even captured Ole' Elmer on video! And you, dear reader, can experience it right here right now. Please peruse Paul's account of the meeting and his pictures of Ole' Elmer and his shop. Thank you Paul, and thanks Ole' Elmer for all the help you've given Apache owners! A Visit With Ole' Elmer
Imagine sitting down and talking with a favorite uncle; this is what it was like meeting Ole' Elmer for the first time. With a thin voice and a huge laugh and smile to match, my wife and I felt at ease talking for what became 5hrs. Although this was a slow day, the phone did ring periodically which helped me to gather my questions together. Ole' Elmer is quite a character. He broke his hip in '99 then broke his foot in 2000 trying to protect his hip during a fall. He laughs about it, but that is his nature. Apache Sales Corp. is housed in a small office /warehouse building shared with another business. What shocked me was there weren't any old camper’s, just parts that look new. Some of the parts are in fact new. They own some of the original dies and are having new parts made. I purchased some myself. They even have the camper names in new plastic. They look good.

Paul Rassinier Background
AUL RASSINIER is known as the father of Holocaust revisionism. Rassinier is an unlikely man to have earned such a title. During World WarII, Rassinier was a highly decorated member of the French Resistance . In October of 1943 he was arrested by the Gestapo for various activities including the smuggling of Jewish refugees over the Franco-Swiss border. Rassinier was sent to the concentration camp at Buchenwald for his activities. Later he would be moved to Dora where he would stay through the war's end.    After the war, Rassinier returned to his native France and was elected to the Assemblee Nationale . He was awarded the highest decoration by the French government for his involvement with the Resistance during the war. Rassinier, who was trained in history, set out after the war to document his experiences within the German concentration camp system. The vivid and accurate depictions of life at Buchenwald and Dora should be read by any who are interested in the subject. Rassinier paints the horrible picture of the dead being brought from Dora to Buchenwald for cremation, "Every day trucks brought full loads of dead bodies from Dora to be cremated at Buchenwald, and it was from the prescence of these corpses that the horrors of the camp were deduced." He received a Latin education in the household of Cardinal Morton and at Oxford. Through his contact with the new learning and his friendships with Colet Lyly , and Erasmus , More became an ardent humanist. As a successful London lawyer, he attracted the attention of Henry VIII , served him on diplomatic missions, entered the king's service in 1518, and was knighted in 1521. More held important government offices and, despite his disapproval of Henry's divorce from , he was made lord chancellor at the fall of Wolsey (1529). He resigned in 1532 because of ill health and probably because of increasing disagreement with Henry's policies. Because of his refusal to subscribe to the Act of Supremacy, which impugned the pope's authority and made Henry the head of the English Church, he was imprisoned (1534) in the Tower and finally beheaded on a charge of treason. A man of noble character and deep, resolute religious conviction, More had great personal charm, unfailing good humor, piercing wit, and a fearlessness that enabled him to jest even on the scaffold. "Growth of happiness. Near to the sorrow of the world, and often upon its volcanic earth, man has laid out his little gardens of happiness; whether he approaches life as one who wants only knowledge from existence, or as one who yields and resigns himself, or as one who rejoices in a difficulty overcome - everywhere we will find some happiness sprouting up next to the trouble. The more volcanic the earth, the greater the happiness will be - but it would be ludicrous to say that this happiness justified suffering per se."
