Tra i suoi romanzi si ricordano Agostino (1943), storia del primo incontro di un adolescente col sesso; La romana (1947), memorabile ritratto di donna sullo sfondo dell'Italia fascista, dal quale nel 1954 fu tratto un film per la regia di Luigi Zampa; L'amore coniugale (1949) e Il disprezzo (1954), nei quali Moravia applica la propria visione critica alla tipica istituzione borghese del matrimonio;

Nemoc a izolace s ní spojená v nìm vyvolaly pocit osamìní a nedostatku kontaktu s okolním svìtem, což se promítá i v Moraviovì díle. Studoval francouzštinu, angliètinu a nìmèinu. Také hodnì èetl napø. G. Boccaccia, Ludovica Ariosta, W. Shakespeara, Moliéra.

Moravia explored in his books sex, social alienation, and other contemporary issues - he was a major figure in the 20th-century Italian literature. Moravia was married to Elsa Morante (1941-1963), who also was a writer, best known for her novel LA STORIA (1974). Several of Moravia's books have been filmed, among them Two Women by Vittorio De Sica (1960), A Ghost at Noon by Jean-Luc Godard (1964), and The Conformist by Bernardo Bertolucci (1970). "Alas, Fausta had told the truth: everything was left exactly as it had been on the day I went away. One seemed to be poking one's nose into the study of one of those long-dead writers whose rooms have been transformed into museums, which are visited by people reverently and hat in hand. Except that there was a difference: those writers whose rooms have been transformed into museums were for the most part real, genuine writers; or were, in their lifetime, sublimated artists of the first water, and their studies are faithful mirrors of their sublimation. I, on the contrary, am desublimated, and my study was clearly a museum of mediocrity, of approximation, of self-didactism, of foolish aspirations, of the near miss, of amateurishness." (from The Two of Us Alberto Pincherle (Alberto Moravia) was born in Rome into a well-to-do middle-class Jewish-Catholic family. His mother was Teresa (de Marcanich) Pincherle, and father, Carlo Pincherle, an architect and a painter. At the age of nine Moravia was stricken with tubercular infection of the leg bones which he considered the most important factor in his early development. He spent from 1916 to 1925 considerable time in sanatoriums. During these years Moravia started to write and published at his own expense his first major novel, GLI INDIFFERENTI (Time of Indifference) in 1929. It was perhaps the first European Existentialist novel.

Moravia is considered one of the foremost 20th-century Italian novelists. He employs taut prose in realist narratives that shed light on such disturbing issues as the relation of the individual to society. His first novel, The Indifferent Ones (1929, tr. 1932), is a powerful and pitiless portrayal of the Italian bourgeoisie at the beginning of fascism. Novels such as The Empty Canvas (1960, tr. 1961) grimly depict the conflict and interaction between the creative and the sensual, while the underlying theme is the apathy and despair of modern people. Moravia's characters have lost faith in the values on which moral foundations are based. Two Women (1957, tr. 1958), a compelling story of wartime flight, was superbly filmed in 1961. His other works include
