Research Contents People Montague Millennium Home Charles Edward Montague, 1867-1928 Writer, World War I soldier, journalist, poet. His collected papers are archived at John Rylands University. `Irish on both sides'. His father, Francis Montague, was from County Tyrone, Ireland (b. 1815); his father renounced the priesthood to marry Rosa McCabe; they married and lived in England; the children never knew any of their Irish relatives but had a rich intellectual home life: `... we grew up under conditions unlike those of the ordinary home. Our parents ... were in a real sense people of leisure, yet people almost out of society. We lived with them far more than most children live with their parents.' Journalist; author of a number of acclaimed books; 24th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, 1914; full sergeant (grenadier-sergeant), 1915; lieutenant; captain (intelligence); press-officer; after the war one of the authors in the 20's that wrote devastatingly of WWI. Disenchantment was his rather philisophical book about World War I combat. If even a fraction of what people have written about him is true, he seems to have been a rare natural soldier. In the early years of the war, he was a combat engineer fighting in the trenches. Later he was promoted into intelligence, and finally an escort for battle-field VIPs.

HALICZ, a town of Austria, in Galicia, 70 m. by rail S.S.E. of Lemberg. . Pop. (1900), 4809. It is situated at the confluence of the Luckow with the Dniester and its principal resources are the recovery of salt from the neighbouring brine wells, soapmaking and the trade in timber. In the neighbourhood are the ruins of the old castle, the seat of the ruler of the former kingdom from which Galicia derived its Polish name. Halicz, which is mentioned in annals as early as 1113, was from 1141 to 1255 the residence of the princes of that name, one of the principalities into which western Russia was then divided. The town was then much larger, as is shown by excavations in the neighbourhood made during the 19th century, and probably met its doom during the Mongol invasion of 1240. In 1349 it was incorporated in the kingdom of Poland. HALIFAX, CHARLES MONTAGUE, EARL OF (1661—1715)

Charles Montague Allen Dies in Arizona
He Was the Son of Charles T. Allen of Oceanic and Went West in Search of Health - He Was Married About a Week Before He Died
Charles Montague Allen, son of Capt. Charles T. Allen of Oceanic, died on Monday at Walnut Grove, Arizona, where he had gone for the benefit of his health. He was 24 years old. He was married on December 28th, 1900, to Miss Ellen Stone of San Francisco, California, whom he had met since going West. His body will be buried at that place. Mr. Allen was born at Oceanic. He became a clerk in James Enright's store at an early age and was employed there about four years. He left there to accept a position as purser on the Lincoln Park boats and he afterward became steward of a big restaurant at Philadelphia. Three years ago, while working in Philadelphia, his health began to fail and he went to southern California in the hope that a change of climate might stay the progress of the disease that threatened his life. Soon after going to California he secured a position at San Francisco in one of the largest wholesale grocery houses on the Pacific coast. He gave up this position to accept a better paying one with the California powder company. Last November a sudden change for the worse in his condition caused him to go to Arizona. His father was sent for at that time and he made a visit to Arizona. When he returned home a few weeks ago his son seemed to be much improved in health. The improvement in his condition proved to be only temporary, however, and he lived but little over a week after his marriage to Miss Stone.
