THE HERO AND THE CROWN
By: Robin McKinley
2.5 Stars
The fantasy genre of literature has never appealed to me, and The Hero and the Crown was no exception. I have read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian by C. S. Lewis, and although I did not enjoy either of these books, I preferred Lewis' style over McKinley's. I also read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, and it is the only fantasy I actually enjoyed because it was action- packed from the beginning. The Hero and the Crown did not compare because there was so little excitement in the first 90 pages. I was rather bored. I liked the characters of the book because I found it ironic that the protagonist of this fantasy story was a female named Aerin, daughter of a king named Arlbeth. I also enjoyed the antagonists which were a wizard named Agsded and a huge black dragon named Maur. Many of the conflicts Aerin encountered intrigued me. She battled with several small dragons, Maur, Agsded, and many other evil Northerners. I was inspired by The Hero and the Crown's theme which was persistence and hard work can lead to the achievement of an individual's goals.

The Blue Sword
By: Robin McKinley
4 Stars
The Blue Sword started out at a slow pace. The author needed time to explain the characters and setting while giving some background and history to get the story going. After McKinley finished explaining this initial introduction the pace quickened. I was able to complete the book in approximately four days. I was able to complete The Blue Sword rapidly because I became extremely interested in all the mystery and excitement of the Damarian Hillfolk and their kelar-enriched mountains. McKinley did an excellent job of making me feel like I was part of the story. There were times when I could almost see the clashing swords and the brilliant war horses charging and colliding on the battle field. During the main battle scene I could see Gonturan, the Blue Sword, as her blue fire and mists descended down, dragging part of the mountains with them, upon the non-human Northerners to ensure that Thurra and his evil mob would never harm another soul again. Compared to other science-fiction books that I have read, The Blue Sword stands out as one that is packed with excitement, adventure, and danger that keeps me on edge whenever I read it. All of the science-fiction books that I have come across are structured around adventure, but few have equalled or surpassed McKinley's ability to make a story come to life in the depths of my imagination.

Review: Robin McKinley, The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown
Robin McKinley's Damar novels, The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword , are quite good fantasy novels that admirably mix coming-of-age stories with interesting world-building and an almost remote mythical quality. I recommend them for readers at young-adult level and up. The Blue Sword comes first in publication order, and tells of a time when the country of Damar is but a shadow of what it once was, thanks in part to the colonization of the continent by Harry Crewe's country, known simply as Home. Harry is energetic, likes to feel useful, loves adventure novels, and is indifferent to embroidery; she is also an impoverished orphan recently taken in as a charity case by her brother's military commander. Harry finds very little outlet for her vague restlessness in her new home, a Homelander fort on the edge of a desert; this changes, however, when she is abducted by the King of Damar, Corlath. Corlath had come to the fort seeking military assistance against the Northerners, ancient and newly-strengthened enemies of Damar from over the mountains. Leaving the meeting in anger, he is unpleasantly surprised to find his kelar The Blue Sword is a well-crafted coming-of-age tale with solid, likeable characters and an interesting world. (However, if one is allergic to horses in one's fantasies, both books should probably be avoided.) Damar is a country with depth and substance, and the Homelanders' colonization efforts add an unusual element to its perils. Likewise, Harry's path includes, realistically, the difficulty of navigating between two cultures and loyalties. These themes are picked up in more detail in the prequel

Review: Spindle's End , Robin McKinley
Robin McKinley's Spindle's End is one of the best novels I've read this year. A beautiful and magical retelling of Sleeping Beauty, I feel this book considerably surpasses her other fairy-tale novels I've read, Beauty and Rose Daughter (both retellings of Beauty and the Beast). (It's hard for me to sensibly compare it to the Damar books , as they're in somewhat different areas of fantasy.) The people first. Rosie, the princess, was given twenty-one names on her name-day (Casta Albinia Allegra Dove Minerva Fidelia Aletta Blythe Domina Delicia Aurelia Grace Isabel Griselda Gwyneth Pearl Ruby Coral Lily Iris Briar-Rose, and what were Rosie hated her curly golden hair. When she was old enough to hold minimal conversations, the itsy-bitsy-cutesy-coo sort of grown-ups would pull the soft ringlets gently and tell her what a pretty little girl she was. She would stare at this sort of grown-up and say, "I am not pretty. I am intelligent. And brave." The grownups usually thought this was darling, which only made her angry, perhaps partly because she was speaking the truth, although it was tricky to differentiate between "brave" and "foolhardy" at three or four years old. . . . Rosie grows up to be an energetic, determined, generous, but entirely non-domestic woman. As she can speak to animals (an extremely rare fairy talent), she has become the local horse-doctor by the time her twenty-first birthday approaches and she learns her true identity. Then, she and her friends (human and animal) and family, wonderful characters all, must find a way to stop Pernicia.

It is also anticipated that her study of "Beauty and the Beast" may prove helpful in providing a model for examining multiple versions of a tale: Hearne, Betsy.
