Robin McKinley
Robin McKinley is a talented, but not very prolific author. Many of her novels are based on legends or fairy tales, but with the exception of Deerskin, I'm fond of them all. BEAUTY This is McKinley's earliest novel, and is a fairly straight-forward retelling of the fairy tale. The characters lose their extremities Beauty is no longer beautiful, her sisters are no longer wicked. Beauty, who is somewhat plain, prides herself on her learning and is utterly practical. The Beast is equally likable, and the whole thing is purely magical. ROSE DAUGHTER This is another retelling of Beauty and the Beast, written some twenty years after Beauty. The style is very different very much more surreal and beautiful (think Patricia A. McKillip . The characters are a little colder, a little distant, and roses and magic, rather than people, are the emphasis. There is some wonderful back story involved, lots of different roses, unique magic, dreams, statues, etc. Surprisingly different from Beauty, but equally readable. THE OUTLAWS OF SHERWOOD In this retelling of the familiar Robin Hood myth, the realities of living in the forest are explored. It no longer is a glorious, heroic life, but rather a hard one. Characters gain dimension and life, and the antagonists are not wholly wicked. If Robin occasionally comes across as a bit flat, Maid Marian and the other companions make up for it.

Robin McKinley Robin McKinley was born in 1952, in Ohio, and since her father was in the navy, she traveled a great deal. One of her greatest enjoyments as a child was reading. She started writing and went to college. Then her first novel "Beauty, a retelling of Beauty and the Beast" was accepted for publication in 1978. Since then, she has moved to England with her husband Peter Dickinson, who is also a writer. Aside from writing, she loves grand opera and long walks, which she claims keeps the blood flowing and her imagination limber. She has written five novels, two books of short stories and a few picture books for children. Out of all of her works, my favorite is certainly "Beauty".

"I would recommend very few of the novels written for teenagers that pass through my hands to a discerning adult reader. So this is a bit of a find. An extraordinarily imaginative retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale, McKinley's book is genuinely enchanting but emotionally tough."

17. The Outlaws Of Sherwood By Robin McKinley -- Robin Hood Spotlight Of The Month
by robin mckinley. Greenwillow hardcover, 1988. mckinley's robin Hood, however,is a (justified) worrywart and a very charming one at that.

September 2002 The Outlaws of Sherwood
by Robin McKinley
Greenwillow hardcover, 1988
Ace Books paperback, 1989
On his way to Nottingham Fair, a young apprentice forester named Robin is accosted by some of his fellow foresters. Forced to flee, Robin shoots some arrows in self-defence at his attackers. One forester is accidentally killed. Robin is outlawed is outlawed for his crimes. He comes to live in Sherwood Forest and assembles a gang of "honest outlaws" to plunder rich travellers and give some comfort to the poorer Saxons. Among his band are Marian, Will Scarlet, Little John and Friar Tuck. The outlaws rescue Alan-a-Dale's bride from an unwanted marriage and help the friendly knight, Sir Richard of the Lea, repay a loan and recover his lands. The outlaws make enemies of the Sheriff of Nottingham, and the sheriff hires a bounty hunter named Guy of Gisbourne to eliminate Robin and his outlaw band. And finally, Robin wonders what will happen when the long-absent King Richard returns to Sherwood.
Summarized that way, it's easy to see why Stephen Knight has described Robin McKinley's book as a "straight re-telling". But such a summary, while accurate in the broad strokes, does not do
