Pier Paolo Pasolini INTERVIEWER When you published the early stories did you consider yourself daring? McEWAN Impatient rather than daring. Among my friends, conversation was so scabrous much of the time anyway. We'd all read Burroughs and Roth and Genet and Joyce, all things were sayable, and had been said. I didn't think of myself as an iconoclast. In fact, I thought I was writing a rather well-mannered, conservative prose. I did think there was a certain self-limiting dullness about English fiction, with its fine nuances of everyday life, and every shade of gray, minutiae of dress, accent, class. The social codes, the way you can manipulate them or be destroyed by them. It's a rich field, of course, but I knew nothing about it, and wanted nothing to do with it. INTERVIEWER Because of your background?

L'amore fatale

Amsterdam The author:
Ian McEwan was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, in 1948 and educated at the Universities of Sussex and East Anglia. His first book, First love, last rights won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1975. His other works include The comfort of strangers , shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1981; The child in time The innocent Black dogs , shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1992; and Enduring love Ian McEwan lives in Oxford Synopsis: Amsterdam tells the darkly comic story of the testing of two friends: Clive Linley, a modern composer, and Vernon Halliday, editor of a struggling broadsheet. Compromising photographs of the Foreign Secretary, taken by a woman who was also the lover of Linley and Halliday, set the story into motion. The plot subsequently wavers between comedy and pathos.
