GREGORY MCDONALD
FLETCH (VINTAGE CRIME/BLACK LIZARD)
SKYLAR IN YANKEELAND
A rogue and a rascalthe trumpet playing, lady-killing toast of Greendowns County, TennesseeSkylar Whitfields talented lips have won him the affection of many a local belle. Now theyve won him a scholarship to a prestigious Northern music schoolwhich is what brings young Skylar into the home of his snooty Boston Brahmin relatives, where he is decidedly not welcome. Perhaps their disdain has something to do with the disappearance of five million dollar-worth of family gembobs on the very night he arrives. Or his amorous effect on some of the Beantown females, whose explicit fantasies could have dire consequences for the visiting country cousin. And of course, theres the murder that Skylar seems involved in up to his Dixie neck FLETCH'S FORTUNE

degree to which he advances the
technique of his craft. Gregory Mcdonald's
way of telling a story, frequently depending almost entirely upon dialogue for characterization, drama, wit, even action at first was declared "impossible" by editors. His style has been among the most widely imitated since he first demonstrated it, although never very successfully. The prime example of this style is not in a mystery, but in "Lovers and Pantaloons," the first work in his volume on The Seven Ages of Man, "Exits and Entrances." (See Other Works Frequent Quotes from Gregory Mcdonald "The magic I attempt is to point the finger, as concisely as possible set the scene, then pull back my hand, disappear as the author, leave the reader alone with the characters. Of course the result of this is, not typical of authors, that tens of millions more people know the names of my characters than know my name, which I don't mind a bit."

The books by Gregory Mcdonald The movies starring Chevy Chase I won't even pretend that I read the books first. I am after all a movie-buff!! I saw the first Fletch film when it came out and thought it was wonderful. I don't always like Chevy Chase, but I had to admit this role was perfect for him. I liked the sequel just as much, but it was with the sequel that I noticed in the credits that the movies were based on novels. Recently, I began to read the novels written by Gregory Mcdonald and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. And noticing that there is a lack of quality Fletch sites, I will begin to catalogue each book as I finish it and detail my reviews here on the web. One of my visitors has interviewed Mcdonald and was kind enough to send me the published story . Follow the link to read up on what he's up to now and what the future might hold. Mcdonald has written 11 books now involvng the character, Irwin Maurice Fletcher. Usually he goes by the preferred name of just Fletch. Usually. He has also gone under so many pseudonyms that I doubt he could recall them all himself. So far, in the books I have read, he has never used any real people. At least none that I know. The movies sort of exaggerate this habit, sometimes to ridiculous extremes, but always for a laugh. According to Mcdonald, there is a chronology to the Fletch books. Although they were published out of this order. An example is that two of the last books written, are in fact the first two books in chronological order. The last two books involve Fletch's son who is a regular chip off the old block.
