B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Edgar Lee Masters (1869-1950) American poet and novelist, best-known as the author of SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY (1915), a series of 'auto-epitaphs' or monologues in free verse, which often contradicted the pious and optimistic epitaphs written on the gravestones. The book gained Masters a large following and set him in the vanguard of the Chicago literary renaissance. "Life all around me here in the village:
Tragedy, comedy, valor and truth,
Courage, constancy, heroism, failure -
All in the loom, and oh what patterns!"

('Petit, the Poet,' from Spoon River Anthology Edgar Lee Masters was born in Garnett, Kansas. In 1880 his family settled at Lewistown, Illinois, near Spoon River, where Masters grew up on his grandfather's farm. Lewistown and Petersburg became models for the scene of his poems in Spoon River Anthology . Masters's father was a lawyer, and did not encourage his son's literary aspirations, refusing to support studies in this field. He attended Knox College, and was admitted to the bar in 1891. He moved to Chicago, where he worked as a lawyer for nearly thirty years. He contracted pneumonia through overwork and his legal clients started to decrease partly because his revealing poems about bigotry and liaisons in Spoon River arose controversy. After retiring Masters devoted himself entirely to writing.

1869 - 1950 Edgar Lee Masters wrote dozens of books, but is best known for The Spoon River Anthology (1915), a collection of poetic pieces that exposed the dark side of small-town life. Each piece reveals the motivations and inner life of a certain type of character found in a fictional small town. This masterpiece brought him out of obscurity, winning him the admiration of Ezra Pound and Carl Sandburg , and inspiring many up-and-coming writers. Unfortunately, although Masters continued to publish poems, novels, and nonfiction for the rest of his life, he never again lived up to the early success of "Spoon River." Masters was born in Kansas and grew up in Petersburg and Lewiston, Ill.. He attended Knox College, where he acquired the training he needed to become a successful lawyer as well as a skilled writer. While working as one of Clarence Darrow's law partners in Chicago, he began publishing his writing, using pseudonyms to keep his writing and legal careers separate.

Edgar Lee Masters
A Biography Herbert K. Russell
This is the first book-length biography of Edgar Lee Masters, author of the celebrated Spoon River Anthology, one of the most widely read and discussed volumes of poetry ever written in America. Like Carl Sandburg, Vachel Lindsay, and the other "prairie poets," Masters (1868-1950) left his small midwestern hometown for Chicago in the hope of becoming a successful writer. He was a family man and a partner in Clarence Darrow's Chicago law firmwriting on the sidewhen, at the age of forty-six, his boyhood dream of literary success suddenly came true. His Spoon River Anthology, a series of monologues spoken by the dead in a midwestern cemetery, became a literary sensation overnight. Castigated by some critics for its "shredded prose" and offensive subject matter, Spoon River Anthology was hailed by others as a watershed in American poetry: a direct, unsentimental, realistic treatment of the blood, grit, and pathos of life in middle America. It was Masters's only lasting success. Herbert K. Russell, acknowledged as the foremost authority on Masters, brilliantly conveys the internal contradictions that drove Masters throughout his life and kept the happiness, love, security, and success he dreamed of always out of reach. Masters was one of America's most prolific authors, publishing fifty-three books during his lifetime; yet only one of his works afforded him lasting recognition. He was a successful Chicago lawyer yet he detested the practice of law and always regarded it as an obstacle to his writing. He married twice but constantly pursued other women, seeking an elusive combination of intellectual compatibility, sexual fireworks, and uncritical admiration.

Edgar Lee Masters was a Chicago lawyer who composed poetry (which he published himself) when he wrote Dreiser in 1912 to praise a recent Dreiser publication, The Financier . In the first page of his letter, he notes that he had followed Dreiser's novels from beginning, when he found himself absorbed by Sister Carrie . He continues: "You have such a capacity for detail and for the pure fact from which truth is secreted that you pile up in tireless fashion the evidence for your argument."

Circolo Culturale Albatross: Edgar Lee Masters

The Spoon River Anthology
The original work was published as a serialized version in 1914-15. In the Anthology, the dead in an Illinois graveyard relay, in matter-of-fact but haunting tones, details from their lives. The Anthology was original, provocative and influentual. Its literary significance has been compared with Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass [published in 1855]. Masters wove a thread of partial reality throughout the Anthology. Many of the characters and their experiences can be identified with former residents of Lewistown and Petersburg, Illinois. Masters' used his childhood experiences in these two communities, as a basis for the poems.

Anti-Imperialist Writings by Edgar Lee Masters
By Jim Zwick
Photograph of Edgar Lee Masters
A lthough he began his career as a lawyer, Edgar Lee Masters (1869-1950) is well-known today as a poet, his Spoon River Anthology still appreciated by many. Unlike most of the anti-imperialists, Masters opposed the Spanish-American War. "I had read enough in the papers to know that war was avoidable," he wrote in his autobiography, Across Spoon River (1936), "and I resolved to have nothing to do with it." He was roused to action by the annexation of the Philippines and the beginning of the new war there. He threw himself into studying the history of the Constitution and the United States' republican form of government, and within the next few years wrote a play, Maximilian (1902), a volume of poetry, and a series of essays on imperialism. During the 1900 presidential campaign, he wrote numerous essays and speeches opposing imperialism and supporting the campaign of William Jennings Bryan , the anti-imperialist Democratic candidate. In October of 1900

The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950)
Index By the turn of the century, Chicago had become a great city, home of innovative architecture and cosmopolitan art collections. Chicago was also the home of Harriet Monroe's Poetry , the most important literary magazine of the day. Among the intriguing contemporary poets the journal printed was Edgar Lee Masters, author of the daring Spoon River Anthology (1915), with its new "unpoetic" colloquial style, frank presentation of sex, critical view of village life, and intensely imagined inner lives of ordinary people. Spoon River Anthology is a collection of portraits presented as colloquial epitaphs (words found inscribed on gravestones) summing up the lives of individual villagers as if in their own words. It presents a panorama of a country village through its cemetery: 250 people buried there speak, revealing their deepest secrets. Many of the people are related; members of about 20 families speak of their failures and dreams in free-verse monologues that are surprisingly modern. Index
