Shakespeare's contemporaries
In the ferment of ideas, plots, images and stage effects, the dramatists of the early seventeenth century borrowed ideas from each other, competed, and admired each other. It is tempting, with our hindsight, to say that others borrowed from Shakespeare, but the truth is more likely that he borrowed as much as he gave. This page and the following one offer brief comments on a number of the more important of those who were writing at the same time as Shakespeare. Many of them are worthy of study in far more depth than we accord them: Shakespeare's light naturally dims those of even the greatest of his peers. Click on any of the names below to read more:
George Chapman. From Shakespeare's England [Notes]
George Chapman (1559-1634)
Like his friend Ben Jonson , Chapman was an immensely learned man. His translation of Homer (1598-1616) was influential as late as the time of John Keats, and he wrote narrative and lyric verse as well as playsboth comedies and tragedies. His most powerfully rhetorical tragedy is Bussy d'Ambois

in 1666, no accurate date exists. It is possible that John Webster attended the respected Merchant Taylors' School, but there is no evidence to the same. There is a record of a John Webster entered at Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court, in 1598, but it is not certain that he was John Webster, the playwright. It is, however, likely, considering Webster's connections with Templars Sir Thomas Overbury John Marston , and John Ford , as well as his knowledge of law as evidenced later by his plays. Yet whoever this Webster was, he was never called to the bar.

. The first mention of Webster as a writer comes in 1602 when Anthony Munday Michael Drayton Thomas Middleton , and John Webster were paid an advance for a now-lost play titled Caesar's Fall (or Two Shapes Webster's first known work dates from 1604. In 1604 Webster wrote an Induction for the revival of John Marston 's The Malcontent , and collaborated with Thomas Dekker on Westward Ho , a citizen comedy , and on The Famous History of Sir Thomas Wyatt . The satire was answered by Jonson , Marston, and Chapman in their Eastward Ho . The collaboration with Dekker continued with their retaliation

    Speculative Housing
Our Clients for this project, Drew Properties New Milton Ltd. asked us to maximise the potential of the site for housing development. It is situated in an area of low density housing developed mainly in the 1950s, and the site contained one life expired bungalow.
Dividing the plot into four, with access from both Marston Road and Cull Lane seemed to offer the best solution. The trees on Cull Lane are protected, and careful design of the access by Landscape Architect Robert Critchley was required to satisfy the requirements of the Local Authority.
The properties are chalet bungalows with a central core utilising the whole cross section of the building envelope. This core contains the Living Room and Dining Hall at ground floor level, giving a dual aspect to the main living spaces, with a bridge linking the two areas of accommodation at each side at first floor level. High level roof windows on both elevations will bring light and sunshine into all parts of the living and dining areas at different times of day throughout the year. The two dwellings on Marston Road are detached, and the two on Cull Lane are semi-detached with a shared access.
Despite some local opposition to the proposals, Planning Approval was authorised by New Forest District Council in July 2002, and it is intended that the properties will be on the market in Summer 2003.
