About
David Lehman 's
Daily Poem
In January 1996, David Lehman began writing a poem nearly every day. During his longest streak, Mr. Lehman wrote a poem on 140 consecutive days. In celebration of National Poetry Month, April 1998, in addition to our daily poem, Poetry Daily presented a poem written by David Lehman each day that month. Mr. Lehman's poems, some of which are past "daily" poems, have appeared in The Yale Review, The Paris Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, Boulevard, Shenandoah, Lingo, Verse, Brilliant Corners, Boston Review, and Boston Book Review His daily poems have now been gathered in a book, The Daily Mirror , a title taken from a New York City tabloid that folded as a result of a calamitous 1962 newspaper strike.

October 2001 David Lehman was born and grew up in New York City, the son of Jewish refugees. He went to Stuyvesant High School, Columbia University, and Cambridge University on a Kellett Fellowship. At Clare College, Cambridge, he couldn't help being aware that a previous Kellett Fellow spending two years at Clare had been John Berryman. Back in the United States in the early 1970s everything for a while seemed ugly: the shoes, men's hair, the job market, tuxedos in garish colors. Lehman wrote a dissertation (on the prose poem) earning a Columbia PhD while teaching at Hamilton College. A post-doctoral fellowship year at Cornell in 1980 helped persuade Lehman that academe was not for him. He set himself up as a free-lance writer, reviewed books regularly for Newsweek and other publications, eventually became a vice president of the National Book Critics Circle. An Alternative to Speech , a first book of poems, came out in 1986. In 1988 he launched The Best American Poetry and has served ever since as the series editor of this annual anthology. Among his nonfiction books, his critique of deconstruction and the Paul de Man scandal

    HE LAST AVANT-GARDE
is a history of the poets of the "New York School," whose leading members are generally considered to be John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, and Kenneth Koch. Influenced by French poetry and therefore by what Ashbery has called the "Other Tradition," these poets are innovative yet respectful of traditional form. They are fond of wild juxtapositions and changes of tone but also of lyrical beauty of expression. In style and attitude, they have the "dash" of Byron rather than the sincerity of Wordsworth. Their work ranges from the postmodern discontinuity of Ashbery's The Tennis Court Oath to the romantic formalism of Kenneth Koch's comic epic in ottava rima, The Duplications . They are also attracted to the compositional methods of the French group Oulipo, of which Harry Mathews, a founding editor of the New York School journal

The Evening Sun by David Lehman Scribner Poetry, 2002 (ISBN 074322552X) What can I say about David Lehman's The Evening Sun not made redundant simply by reading the book? Like its predecessor, The Daily Mirror The Evening Sun is nearly perfect, a remarkable poetic vision of the daily life of the mind. For anyone not familiar with Lehman's poem-a-day project, anyone who has somehow avoided the date-titled poems in all the prestigious literary journals (not to mention online journals like Poetry Daily) where they have appeared, this collection will come as somewhat of a surprise. Dressed up as single-stanza journal entries that read like a foursome of Freud, Jung, Kafka, and Burroughs having a one-up contest by comparing dreams, Lehman's work is everything contemporary poetry is not, but should be (or at least, thanks to his ongoing proof with every poem he writes, everything it could be The Evening Sun runs 159 pages and covers, according to the author's preface, the years 1999 and 2000, with the dates jumbled up and no year attached, making the poems somewhat more universal. Lehman explained in the earlier collection how he often changes dates if two good poems coincide with the same date/title, making another interesting diversion to consider as one reads the poems: were these from '99, '00, or maybe another year altogether? It adds a hint of mystery to a book that already brings its own twists, turns, and red herrings.

It seems to me that the biography of a great poet or a controversial thinker, in addition to being intrinsically interesting, can help illuminate a specific text, a current of thought, or a cultural phenomenon-in some cases all three. The use of biography has what you might call a functional advantage: the strong narrative drive that comes with the turf helps sustain the reader's attention. In American universities, biography as a tool of literary criticism has been out of favor for about sixty years, which may make me something of a maverick. But books as different from one another as Lionel Trilling's study of Matthew Arnold (1939) and Janet Malcolm's book on the Sylvia Plath biography industry (1994) show several imaginative ways of combining biography with the study of literature and ideas.
