Justice Donald King (retired) was perhaps the preeminent judge dealing with family law matters in the state of California. Given California's status as an innovative, leading-edge state in this field, this status makes Justice King perhaps the preeminent judge in the area of family law matters nationwide. Justice King served on the California Court of Appeal for 13 years, where he authored more family law opinions than any previous California Appellate Justice. Justice King has received many honors and awards over the years. Perhaps the greatest award of his career was given upon his retirement, when the California State Bar announced that its annual family law judicial award would be renamed the Justice Donald B. King Family Law Judicial Officer of the Year Award, in his honor.

Our governments measure our standard of living with the dollar numbers produced by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Our federal government and churches set up Indian residential schools and destroyed children's lives, yet the establishment of these predatory schools increased the GDP and provided an addition to our standard of living. B.C.'s

It is difficult to struggle against the demented mentality of our current leaders, and this struggle becomes more difficult as our justice system put money before people's lives. Take the case of the recent judgement provided by Chief Justice Donald Brenner of the B.C. Supreme Court between seven former students of an Indian residential school versus the government, the United Church and former dormitory supervisor Arthur Plint. In handing down the judgement, Justice Brenner took into consideration the B.C.'s Limitations Act and restricted his judgement to claims of sexual abuse for which there is no time limit. Arthur Plint was found guilty of pedophile acts, the government and church were ordered to pay a total of $410,000 to six victims while the claim of a seventh was rejected. Justice Brenner explained

Court backs murder pair
By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter dangelo@nsnews.com
THE B.C. Court of Appeal ruled Monday that two North Vancouver men charged with murder in the U.S. should not be extradited to to face the death penalty.
Two of three judges decided that former federal Justice Minister Allan Rock made a mistake. Rock should have asked for assurances that no death penalty would be imposed if Atif Rafay and Sebastian Burns were convicted of aggravated premeditated murders. "When the applicants (Rafay and Burns) returned to Canada after the killings, they came to the place where they were ordinarily resident and in doing so they exercised a right of citizenship guaranteed by the Charter. They came home," wrote Mr. Justice Ian T. Donald. Burns and Rafay were both 18 when Rafay's parents and handicapped sister, Basma, 21, were bludgeoned to death in their Bellevue Washington home. Rafay's parents, Tariq and Sultana, both 56, moved from North Vancouver to Bellevue about one year before their murders on July 12, 1994. Days after the murders, Burns and Rafay came back to Canada. More than one year after the murders, Washington State officials charged them with three counts of aggravated first-degree murder. The pair lived in a house on Philip Avenue in North Vancouver when charged.

    1. A Happy Childhood [Hoy] You were born in Miami, Florida, but your parents weren't from there originally, as I understand it. They'd moved there as part of the 1920s land boom. [Justice] My parents were from south Georgia, a region of villages and small farms. After World War I, in which he had served with the Allied Expeditionary Force, my father seems to have drifted southward through the small towns of north Florida, working at various jobs, picking up the elements of carpentry, the trade he would follow for the rest of his life. He ended up in Miami, which was humming then with all the possibilities of a new frontier, much new construction, and newcomers arriving daily, many of them, like my parents, from the lower South. Indeed, if you stopped by the downtown post office, you were likely to find, seated on the broad neo-classical steps of the building, sunning themselves, people from your own part of the world, people you might know or who would know relatives of yours. A Note on Donald Justice Justice attended Allapattah Elementary School, Andrew Jackson High School and the Senior High School in Miami. Then, in the autumn of 1942, he enrolled for a BA in Music at the University of Miami, where he studied for a time with the composer Carl Ruggles. At a certain point, however, Justice decided that he might have more talent as a writer than a composer, and when he took his degree, in 1945, it was not in Music but English. But if the occasion was cause for celebration, it will have been overshadowed by the announcement that the university was letting all of its English instructors go. In the spring of 1954, just two years after his arrival, Justice obtained his PhD, and was promptly awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship in poetry, which made it possible for him to travel to Europe for the first time. After his return, he spent two years as an assistant professor, one at the University of Missouri at Columbia, the other at Hamline University, St Paul, Minnesota. Then, in 1957, he went back to the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where he had agreed to take over some of his teaching while Engle was away on leave. This was to have been a temporary appointment, but when Engle returned, he was asked to stay on, and he remained at the Workshop for over ten years.
