Review by Valerie Nielsen.
In Janey's Choice, Bernice Hunter Thurman has given readers a sequel to Amy's Promise, her 1995 award-winning book about the Phair family. Set in 1931, Janey's Choice How Janey deals with her difficult family, (in particular her father, who is bad-tempered, impatient and given to preferential treatment of his children), by balancing loyalty to her sister against her family's need for a new mother, provides the major conflict in this story. Thurman's pace is unhurried, and her prose simple; however, her ability to select and describe vivid details, (perhaps from childhood memories), enables her to show, rather than tell, her readers about life in the 1930's. Although the novel has charm for an adult reader, (particularly those born early enough to feel nostalgia for the era she depicts), the gentle pace of the novel, so unlike the taut page-turners that line young adult shelves, and the 1930's setting may deter younger readers from persevering with the book. Fans of other Thurman novels, such as the "Booky" trilogy and especially those who were gripped by the poignant story of Amy's Promise will not be disappointed by Janey's Choice.

Reviewed by Pauline Henaut. Volume 15 Number 2
1987 March
Bernice Thurman Hunter, author of the Booky books, has written a sequel to A Place for Margaret Margaret's love of animals, particularly her Clydesdale, Starr, encourages her to begin planning for a veterinary career. Margaret has a warm, loving relationship with her aunt and uncle, with whom she has chosen to live. However, like her peers, she does not always obey their direction completely; as a result of an incident of disobedience, Margaret breaks her leg badly and must go to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. She goes to her parents' new home in the city to recuperate, where she finds herself "in the middle," enjoying her family and new surroundings, yet missing her life on the farm. In addition to its engaging characters and interesting plot, the book provides visual appeal with its attractive cover and easily readable print. The story will be popular with fans of Bernice Hunter's previous novels, and with readers who are horse-lovers or who like a realistic story about their peers. Pauline Henaut, New Glasgow Schools, New Glasgow, NS.

  • Monica Hughes Monica Hughes, who died on March 7th 2003 at the age of seventy-seven, was born in 1925 in Liverpool, England. Her parents moved to Cairo for the first five years of her life, then Scotland and England. She served in the WRNS during World War 11, then worked in Zimbabwe for two years before coming to Canada in 1952 where she worked at the National Research Council. In 1957 she married her husband, Glen, in Ottawa, and in 1964 the family moved to Edmonton. When the youngest child started school she considered how to use her time. "In a book on writing for young people I discovered the terrific juvenile novels written in the 50s and 60s. Then I knew I wanted to write books for young people." Getting published was another affair, and in the end the first books were published by British publisher Hamish Hamilton. No Canadian publisher was interested at that time.
