HERNAN CASTELLANO GIRON To earn a living, he worked in science teaching and research at the University of Chile in Santiago until 1973 when the military dictartorship of Augusto Pinochet imperiled the lives of most of Chilean intellectuals and artists. He was forced into exile in Italy, where he lived until 1981, when he moved to the USA to pursue a doctorate in Modern Languages at Wayne State University in Detroit. There he studied under the direction of internationally renowned professor and scholar Ivan A. Schulman, obtaining his doctorate in 1987. He has published articles and essays in some of the best literary and scholarly organs of the Hispanic language and academia, such as Hispamerica, Cuadernos Americanos, Revista Iberoamericana and Revista Nacional de Cultura. He now teaches Spanish language, Italian language and cultures, and Spanish American literature and cultures at California Polytechnic State University , San Luis Obispo, California. Perteneció a una familia de rancia aristocracia donde siempre se respiró un gran ambiente intelectual. Antes de cumplir los veinte años publicó su primer libro de poemas, «Ecos del alma», donde dejó entrever el modernismo que declaró oficialmente en su manifiesto «Non Serviam» en 1914. Está considerado como uno de los poetas vanguardistas más importantes de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Creó y difundió con mucho éxito la corriente del «Creacionismo», en la que se resume lo mejor del cubismo y el futurismo. Vivió en Paris donde trabó amistad con grandes vanguardistas de la época como Apollinaire, Jean Cocteau, André Bretón, Picasso y Juan Gris. Entre sus obras destacadas pueden señalarse, «Altazor» 1931, «Temblor de cielo», «Poemas árticos», «Ecuatorial», «Tour Eiffel» y «Hallali». Falleció en el año de 1948.

Hart University of Kentucky T modernismo (Los senderos ocultos) The two specifically hispanic movements which are associated with the avant-garde are creacionismo (founded by the Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro along with the French poet Pierre Reverdy) and . As we shall see, it is not easy to separate these two movements either ideologically or chronologically. They have many features in common with Gerardo Diego acting as an axis figure playing a significant part in both movements. However, I intend to study the two movements separately, and to conclude with a study of the avant-garde in Catalonia, with special reference to the work of Joan Salvat-Papasseit. CREACIONISMO Before going to Paris towards the end of 1916, Vicente Huidobro was already an established writer in his native Chile.
