Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath in 1956, the year they were married. REVIEWS OF TED HUGHES'S EARLIER BOOKS:
  • The Hawk in the Rain ' Reviewed by W.S. Merwin
"They are unmistakably a young man's poems, which accounts for some of their defects as well as some of their strength and brilliance. And Mr. Hughes has the kind of talent that makes you wonder more than commonly where he will go from here, not because you can't guess but because you venture to hope."
  • From the Life and Songs of Crow
"Ted Hughes has written a strange, eerie powerful set of poems that stand unmatched in their singular quality. . . . The effect of the book is chilling: there is not a single warm emotion in it. The language is violent, colors are stark, the imagery reduces humans to their animal status."
  • Selected Poems 1957-1967
"Hughes is a difficult poet to love (he asks for none) but he is there at the front of contemporary poetry, where the pickaxes clink and the mine is extended; and, at whatever cost of increasing uglification, he has helped keep imagination grand."

Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq The Thought Fox I imagine this midnight moment's forest: Something else is alive Besides the clock's loneliness And this blank page where my fingers move. Through the window I see no star: Something more near Though deeper within darkness Is entering the loneliness: Cold, delicately as the dark snow, A fox's nose touches twig, leaf; Two eyes serve a movement, that now And again now, and now, and now Sets neat prints into the snow Between trees, and warily a lame Shadow lags by stump and in hollow Of a body that is bold to come Across clearings, an eye, A widening deepening greenness, Brilliantly, concentratedly, Coming about its own business Till, with sudden sharp hot stink of fox It enters the dark hole of the head. The window is starless still; the clock ticks, The page is printed. Ted Hughes Somehow, the adjective that comes to mind most often when I read Ted Hughes is 'clean' - I think of his poetry as being very concise, very elegantly crafted, incisive, as glittering and sharp and dangerous as a scalpel... there's a latent violence about his work that, barely restrained, imbues the whole with a raw, primal power. And yet... poems like 'Hawk Roosting' (Minstrels, Poem #42 http://www.sunday-times.co.uk:80/news/pages/tim/98/10/30/timobiobi02002.html?1045266
