HOME Index of Authors Index of Categories Reviews ... JOAN HALL HOVEY INTERVIEW Author of LISTEN TO THE SHADOWS How difficult is it being a writer firstly, a crime writer secondly? Do you find Canadian writers have difficulties in breaking the US and UK markets? It’s not difficult to be a writer if you have a love of writing. Which is not to say it isn’t hard work. It is. What is difficult is trying to make a decent living by the written word – ‘…Ay, there’s the rub…’ All I know is that if you want to write, you’ll write. I also think that just because you’re writing about crime doesn’t mean it can’t be a major work. John D. McDonald is one example of a wonderful writer who wrote about crime. His The End of the Night, is a small masterpiece. Marketing is another story and as big houses merge there are fewer and fewer places to submit your work. Again, though, driven writers will ultimately find a way to get their work to readers. US publishers have recently turned down the possibility to print a paperback of Kate Charles because she is considered "too British". What do you think about this issue and why do you think that some US publishers have this attitude towards British mysteries?

"Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader - not the fact that it's raining, but the feel of being rained upon." E.L. Doctorow
Dear writer: Having been a writing instructor for some years, I know that many struggling writers think there is some trick to getting published. Some well-guarded secret at the bottom of it all, and perhaps they are not too far off the mark. The secret is, of course, an indomitable belief in yourself a belief so well entrenched that all the rejection and frustration that is part of the writer's life, (or any artist's life) will not dislodge it. You must rise above the fear that all writers know, the fear of putting your work (yourself) out there, never knowing if it will be praised or ridiculed. It takes courage to be a writer. (You're already an avid reader if you aspire to be a writer, so no need to go into that.) Books I have loved and learned from.

Joan Hall Hovey is also a writing instructor. Writing gives me a sense of achievement and satisfaction that nothing else does. (Except having my babies.) And that's not a bad analogy, if not an original one. Holding your published book in your hands, (especially that first one), running your fingers over its smooth cover, tracing your name there is heady stuff! For me, a dream come true. I know that I am truly blessed to be permitted to work every day a what I most love and need to do. I think you appreciate it even more when you've had to go to those awful 9 to 5 jobs you hated, because the bills have to be paid. And I've had my share of them over the years hulling strawberries, waiting tables, grading eggs... (top that one). A couple of those jobs have left scars. I've been stalked by a psychotic customer when I was selling 'CAA'. (Canada's version of 'AAA'.) I've been chased around the desk by a so-called pillar of society while working as a secretary. But while I wouldn't want to repeat it, I wouldn't take back a single moment of any of it. All is 'grist' for the writer's mill. The next best thing is hearing from my readers. You have been so generous in your comments, so kind to take the time in your own busy lives to write to me. Telling me that my novels kept you up all night, or that you couldn't put the book down was music to my ears, and keep me going in the dark times that come to most writers, while I find my way about in the unknown, unlit territory of this next book.

I was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada's oldest incorporated city, situated on the Bay of Fundy. I married my husband, Mel, when I was 18, and we had 3 children within four years. (our son, Bill, came along 18 years later.) When the children were still small, we moved from the city to Gondola Point, (it was country then, but no more) and have lived here quite contently for many years now with our poodle, Coco, and cat, Sasha, in a modest, but comfortable home, overlooking the Kennebecasis River. Lots of lovely tall pine trees as I look out my window. People often tell me the view must be inspiring, but the truth is when I'm at my computer, my back is to it. My head is already filled with characters and scenes; I'm living in a world of the imagination.
My first story sold to True Confessions, more than 20 years ago. The second story, after being rejected numerous times, sold to

DARK REUNION A Short Story by Joan Hall Hovey Approximately 11 printed pages Laurie arrived at the reunion alone. David had begged off, saying he didn't even plan on going to his own reunion, but encouraging her to go and have a good time. "Those things can dredge up a lot of adolescent garbage," he'd said. Later, his words would come back to haunt her. When she was dressed, she did a little whirl in front of him, and was rewarded with a whistle. "Hey, I'm not so sure I should let you go alone. You look too damn good." "You don't think it's too short." "Yeah, actually I do. Why don't you wear your old plaid nightshirt over it? It's in your drawer. I'll get it." She laughed and kissed him goodbye. It was an hour's flight from Halifax to Saint John. She took a cab from her mother's. And now that she was here, she wasn't sure why. She'd never been in the clique, part of the "in-crowd." Still, there were a few people she was looking forward to seeing again. Dodie, her best friend, wouldn't be here; she'd gotten her nursing degree and moved to the states. The gym was bright and noisy, festive with red and blue balloons (the school colors), streamers and flowers. A mingling of perfumes and good food wafted to her as she scanned the crowd for a familiar face. She spotted Harold Thomas across the room, doing a slow move to the beat of Barry Manilou's

PRAISE FOR LISTEN TO THE SHADOWS
New author, Joan Hall Hovey, packs quite a terrifying punch as her first novel, 'Listen to the Shadows', spins a chilling tale of revenge, murder and madness whose true horror is cleverly cloaked with a misleadingly attractive face. An author to watch in the future. Jill M. Smith Rave Reviews, N.Y.
"...a blend a various genres...will appeal to fans of romance, gothic and suspense novels. Hovey's scenes focusing on this deranged psychopath are razor sharp, and one is reminded of author Ruth Rendell." -Evening Times Globe, Saint John, NB
Written with the finesse and grace of a master, Joan Hall Hovey's first novel, LISTEN To THE SHADOWS, is an engrossing tale of fear and danger certain to keep the reader awake, turning pages long after bed time, and listening carefully to everything around them. ... a powerful new voice in the world of suspense and mystery. Her tight plot, well-developed characters and originality will satisfy the reader's craving for tension and danger. I certainly look forward to more novels by the promising author with great eagerness...Cindy Penn -Wordweaving.com
"...a work so accomplished, so fluid and so suspenseful it is difficult to believe it really is a first novel!"-Felix Griffin, Rave Reviews, NY
