B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Seamus (Justin) Heaney (1939-) Irish poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. According to Heaney, poetry balances the "scales of reality towards some transcendent equilibrium." From the early collections, Heaney have combined in his work deep personal memories with images of Irish heritage and the landscape of Northern Ireland. There is also references to English-Irish and Catholic-Protestant conflict, but Heaney's view is much more visionary and allegorical than bound to contemporary issues. "Only the very stupid or the very deprived can any longer help knowing that the documents of civilization have been written in blood and tears, blood and tears no less real for being very remote. And when this intellectual predisposition co-exists with the actualities of Ulster and Israel and Bosnia and Rwanda and a host of other wounded spots on the face of the earth, the inclination is not only not to credit human nature with much constructive potential but not to credit anything too positive in the work of art." (from Nobel Lecture Seamus Heaney was born near Castledawson, County Derry, and grew up on his father's cattle farm. He was the eldest in a Catholic family of nine children. Heaney attended St. Columb's College, Derry, and moved in 1957 to Belfast to continued his studies. In 1961 Heaney graduated from Queen's University, Belfast, and was then trained as teacher at St. Joseph's College of Education. After one year as a secondary school teacher, Heaney returned to St. Josephs, where he was a lecturer for three years. In 1966 he became a lecturer at Queen University.

O NE of the most celebrated literary landmarks in Ireland is "the autograph tree," in what was once the walled garden of Lady Augusta Gregory's estate at Coole Park, in County Galway. On the welted bark one can still make out the famous initials: WBY, GBS, AE, and several more, including those of Violet Martin (the pseudonymous "Ross" of the Somerville and Ross writing partnership), who visited Coole in the summer of 1901, and wrote,
Yeats looks just what I expected. A cross between a Dominie Sampson and a starved R.C. curate in seedy black clothes with a large black bow at the root of his long naked throat. He is egregiously the poet mutters ends of verse to himself with a wild eye, bows over your hand in dark silence but poet he is and very interesting indeed and somehow sympathetic to talk to I liked him.... Augusta made me add my initials to a tree already decorated by Douglas Hyde, AE and more of the literary crowd. It was most touching. WBY did the carving, I smoked, and high literary conversation raged and the cigarette went out and I couldn't make the matches light, and he held the little dingy lappets of his coat out and I lighted the match in his bosom.

Composed toward the end of the first millennium of our era, Beowulf is the elegiac narrative of the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel's mother. He then returns to his own country and dies in old age in a vivid fight against a dragon. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on in the exhausted aftermath. In the contours of this story, at once remote and uncannily familiar at the end of the twentieth century, Seamus Heaney finds a resonance that summons power to the poetry from deep beneath its surface. Drawn to what he has called the "four-squareness of the utterance" in Beowulf and its immense emotional credibility, Heaney gives these epic qualities new and convincing reality for the contemporary reader.

    1. "All we have to go on" [Miller] 'The Strand at Lough Beg' is an elegy for a murdered cousin, Colum McCartney. In a later poem of yours, 'VIII' in the collection of 1984, Station Island , Colum reproaches you for having 'saccharined my death with morning dew', and indeed there is some morning dew in the elegy. Next to the later poem stands one of your finest, least sweet, poems, in which the ghost of a friend, a murdered shopkeeper, appears to you, causing you to ask forgiveness for a former indifference. [Miller] That poem is sufficient in itself to show how a vigilance in relation to events whose significance is at once private and public, personal and political, can produce some of your best utterance. That friend, according to his deposition in the poem, squeezed his wife's hand before descending to the shop, where he was shot. Your Nobel Prize address mentions another squeeze of the hand, administered in 1976 to a Catholic workman by a Protestant workman, two of a party, all but one of them Protestant, which had been captured by gunmen.
