Burning Heart: A Portrait of the Philippines January 4, 2000 - I just found out about this book by my favorite Filipino author, Jessica Hagedorn and photographs by Marissa Roth. I just bought the book from Amazon.com so the review will come later. But I am so excited about this book because the cover photograph alone tells me it is something very special. More later. Dogeaters by Jessica Hagedorn. One of the more celebrated novels in 1990. Nominated for the US National Book Award in 1990. Robert Stone (author of Dog Soldiers and Outerbridge Reach ) says "(It) is a fine achievement on a very serious scale. It succeeds in rendering the portrait of a nation in troubled times through vivid, memorable characters and with irrefutable wit and passion. This is the definitive novel of the encouter between the Philippines and America and their history of mutual illusion, antagonism, and ambiguous affection. it is a rich and satisfying work and certainly among the best novels I've read this year ..." From Pantheon Books, 1990. Jessica Hagedorn is a poet, multimedia artis, screenwriter, and novelist, born and raised in the Philippines. She moved to the United States in her teens.

Gangster of Love , explores the existential void that greets young Filipino immigrants to America in the 1970's, a "teenage wasteland" of drugs and rock-and-roll, rootlessness, boredom and self-destructive behavior. As a study of alienation, it has provoked numerous comparisons by critics to A Catcher in the Rye Dogeaters , appeared to enormous critical acclaim in 1989, receiving a nomination for the National Book Award. It contrasts the lives of Manila slum-dwellers with a bloated, frivolous and bloodthirsty elite modeled on the Marcos regime. In rich and vivid English, flavored both by Tagalog and Spanish, the author assaults all of the senses. The New York Times reviewer asserted that Dogeaters is "as sharp and fast as a street boy's razor... a rich small feast of a book." New York Times interviewer called "the mixed-up, multicultural American muck that she has known in San Francisco and New York." She is also an accomplished and innovative performance artist. Her multimedia theater piece, Mango Tango , was produced by Joseph Papp at the Public Theater of the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Created by Jessica Hagedorn (the writer and performance artist) and John Woo (of Woo Art International (not the HK filmmaker)), "The Pink Palace" is a series of seven minute episodes about a Filipina mother and daughter living in Oakland, California. AsianAmericanFilm.com spoke with Hagedorn to learn a little more about the project. Links Woo Art International Post your comments on the Message Boards! AAF What inspired the stories behind "Pink Palace"? JH "The Pink Palace" was inspired by some actual real-life stories and by my imagination. I came to America as a teenager from Manila and lived in the Bay Area... therefore, much of the angst and uncertainty Baby, my main character, feels, comes from some of my life experience. My own mother was a painter, and quite progressive in her ideas. but also very much a product of her Philippine culture. She was complex and contradictory, so I was inspired by memories of her. AAF Why animation rather than live action?

About Jessica Hagedorn Oscar V. Campomanes A novelist, poet, multimedia and performance artist. Jessica Tarahata Hagedorn had been in the United States for only three years (after moving from the Philippines at age thirteen) when her poems caught the attention of Kenneth Rexroth. Rexroth, a San Francisco-based artist, encouraged her to hone her writing and edited the book that first featured her poetry, Four Young Women (1973). Forged in the heat of the early 1970s ethnic revival, her early forays into poetry, playwriting, and short fiction employed the psychedelic and rebellious idioms particular to that period. Anthologized in Mountain Moving Day Third World Women (1973), and Time to Greez! (1975), she soon produced her first collection of poetry and fiction, Dangerous Music While in San Francisco, Hagedorn took acting lessons and subsequently developed an interest in the performing arts that was to steer her into multimedia work. Her experience as a lyricist for a band configured her poetry as one of effect and rhythm, proving congenial to her interest in interpretive readings and theater, After Joseph Papp produced her collaboration with Thulani Davis and Ntozake Shange, Where the Mississippi Meets the Amazon (1977), she moved to New York to work as a playwright and musician, involvements that stamped her poetry with distinctively performative strains. Papp produced her first play

Returning to her motherland from the United States to re-collect her family identity, Rio complains that already the names of her paternal great-grandparents are lost, the photographs of her Chinese great- grandmother have been burnt, the name of the Spanish missionary who fathered her "blue-eyed [maternal] great grandmother" has been permanently suppressed, the place of her maternal grandfather's origin in the U.S., forgotten. "I am ashamed at having to invent my own history" (239).
