The Life of W S Gilbert
A brief summary William Schwenck Gilbert was born at 17 Southampton Street, Strand, London on the 18th of November, 1836, the son of William Gilbert (a retired naval surgeon) and Anne Gilbert. He had three younger sisters: Jane, Maud and Florence. He seems to have been interested in the theatre from an early age - he later recalled the Haymarket being lit by wax candles in the mid-1840s. He completed his education at King's College, London, and forwent the possibility of going on to Oxford by taking training as an artillery officer and was tutored in military science with hopes joining the army and participating in the Crimean War. Unfortunately for him he did not graduate until after the War was over. Gilbert subsequently joined the militia and was a member for 20 years. In the period 1857-66, he made abortive attempts at careers as Government clerk and barrister: however, he retreated out of both these professions as soon as he could. In 1861 or 1862 he started contributing drawings, prose and verse to the recently-established comic journal Fun. Among the products of this association were The Bab Ballads. On the 6th of August, 1867, Gilbert married Lucy Agnes Turner. Most of the biographies provide very little information by which her personality can be deduced, apart from the bare statement that she was soothing and conciliatory where he was abrasive and confrontational. The latest biography, by Jane Stedman, suggests something more: not as tough as a bone, but certainly with a will of her own. She seems to have ruled in the domestic sphere, and there are even hints that Gilbert may have feared her anger. We still know very little about her; but this is more than we have ever been told before.

  • Life of Gilbert Dramatic Works Other Works Contents List of Journal Articles
  • William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) was one of the most original dramatists of the nineteenth century. He is best known today for having been the "words man" behind the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, but, while this was indeed his greatest achievement, it was far from being his only achievement. Much of his work remains practically unknown today, and even his best-known works such as The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance are rarely considered worth serious study. The W.S. Gilbert Society was formed in 1985 to further the knowledge, study, appreciation and enjoyment of Gilbert's life and works. It publishes a Journal in which historical, theatrical, literary and other issues of Gilbertian interest are debated. At present, the Society is being run by a small group consisting of: Philip Plumb (Chairman)
    David Duffey (Secretary)
    Brian Jones (Editor)
Michael Walters To join the W.S. Gilbert Society, please contact the Hon. Secretary David Duffey at:

    BABLIOPHILE
An Internet Magazine for the Seriously Deranged W.S. Gilbert Enthusiast,
created, updated and ruined by Andrew Crowther.
    Last Update: November 2002.
Babliophile is a celebration of the works of W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911). Famous today for being half the partnership of Gilbert and Sullivan, he wrote the words for such celebrated works as H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado , as well as less well-known pieces like Engaged and A Sensation Novel - not to mention the irresponsibly extravagant Bab Ballads, from which I take the name of this page.
    So What Else is New?
I am proud to be able to reprint Gilbert's article Actors and Authors , which was written for the commemorative brochure of a benefit in 1909 and has, as far as I know, dropped out of sight ever since. My thanks go to Simon Moss for unearthing it once more. Simon Moss is a London dealer in British entertainment memorabilia and fosters a passion for both Gilbert and Sullivan: his website is at www/c20th.com My thanks are also due to John McDonnell for drawing my attention to his web transcription of the Victorian book London Characters (1871), which includes several articles by Gilbert with Bab illustrations. One of these is "Getting Up a Pantomime", which is also available on this site, but there are four others which will repay inspection: "Thumbnail Studies in the London Streets", Parts 1 and 2; "Sitting At a Play"; and "The Thumbnail Sketcher in a Cab". These articles originally appeared in the magazine

The Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave of Duty, a two-act operetta by the immortal operetta-writing duo of Gilbert and Sullivan, has delighted audiences for over a century with its madcap tale rendered in catchy melodies and witty lyrics of tender-hearted buccaneers and the demands of duty. This exemplary new edition of the vocal score was prepared by musicologists Carl Simpson andEphraim Hammett Jones, who also produced Dover's highly successful The Mikado (in both full and vocal scores). The editors returned to original manuscripts and early sources to produce handsome, newly engraved plates closest to Gilbert and Sullivan's original intentions. All of the voice parts appear here, in addition to a piano reduction of the full score and the complete libretto. Now available PRODUCT CODE: 0486418936 USA/Canada: US$ 17.90
