Alistair Gentry Werewolves 23 March - 12 May 2002 ArtSway is pleased to present an exhibition of exciting new work by Alistair Gentry. Werewolves is a digital sound and environmental installation, and an experiment in the direct stimulation of visitor responses to art works.
The Feraliminal Lycanthropiser (recreated digitally here) is a device reputed to promote feelings of openness, urgency and pure existence in the present, and a temporary redirection or suppression of conscious thoughts. The installation incorporates various spoken texts, which operate on the threshold of decipherability. These all pertain in some way to physical or psychological transformations and include old stories and rhymes, contemporary motivational mantras and inarticulate human vocalisations. Many people still seek transformation and freedom from what they see as mundane lives.
All that has changed is that they look to technology and to 'experts' instead of to the superstitions and the witches of previous centuries.

TITLE Their Heads Are Anonymous AUTHOR Alistair Gentry
A novel about desire, secret histories and psychic insects. Parry is the only person who sees the saucers hovering over Bigger Amusement World. Since he's dressed as a giant rabbit and suffering a bit from the heat in his funfur suit, nobody believes him. But the creatures flying the saucers have got their own ideas about how things are going to be in the Amusement World...
Alistair Gentry was born in 1973. His play THE UNCLEAR AGE was produced for radio in 1995 and won a Young Playwright of the Year award. His recent work includes two commissions for Soho Theatre Company, SPINES (1996) and LUCKY COWS
"A bilious critique of haywire consumerism and corporate hypocrisy laced with 90's cultural atrophy. Repulsive, engrossing and hilarious. Book of the month." G-Spot "A smart, accomplished and sharply focused satire... Alistair Gentry is the Rudy Rucker of the chemical generation." i-D

Each death is as different as people are different. Each is a story to be told.
Inspired by the black box flight recorders of crashed planes, 100 black boxes is a hypertext fiction constructed from 100 words each by 100 characters about the moment of their deaths. The shading of each box indicates how many times it has been visited. 100 black boxes was written for the WWW by Alistair Gentry . Over the two-year active period of the site, every box became black with use (i.e. was read at least 100 times). Some boxes cycled from white to black numerous times. See a graphic of site usage for the active period of the site. The active period of the site is now over. It will remain online indefinitely but analysis of page usage will no longer function. We hope you will continue to look at the stories if you haven't read them all, and keep on spreading the word. Parry's colossal head
Alistair Gentry
Parry was dressed as a rabbit on that hot afternoon. A rabbit with a name and a history. Gogo Bunny, one of the Bigger entertainment empire's roster of trademarked bringers of joy. Not in the same league as Maggie Gnu or Zero the Dog, to be sure, but popular as adorably anthropomorphisized mammals went. Self-obsolescent lunch boxes, plastic tubes dispensing bland powdery sweets, stationery for teenage girls, polystyrene flavoured cereal; all these things and thousands of others bore images of the rabbit's big stupid head. Gogo was a nature spirit, a free-wheeling kind of guy in touch with his inner lagomorphic drives. Inside his fuzzy skin was a pissed off, overheated, sweating primate in his twenties whose job required him to wander through Bigger Amusement World dressed in thick grey funfur tat. Parry was determined to get through each day as best he could with minimum abrasion; the days he succeeded he went to bed if not a happy man, then at least a not unhappy one.
As he absently observed a group of South Asian Americans in their twenties eating clammy pre-filled lettuce and brie baguettes, he allowed himself to enjoy the strange kind of comfort which was sometimes to be found in the rank combination of cave and baked potato in a microwave that was Gogo Bunny's head. Ludicrous as it was the costume gave him a sense of identity through his very anonymity (I am not this stupid thing, I just wear his body, it is not my fault) and airless as it was it provided him with some breathing space. A space in which he didn't have to think. He liked that sometimes.

HOME HYPNOMART
A short film by Joe Magee and Alistair Gentry Synopsis HYPNOMART uses covert footage of shoppers in a suburban mall to study human behaviour, and as source material for the artists' own manipulations of unsuspecting consumers. In these comprehensively surveilled and clinical environments, tiny gestures are magnified and transmit virally through the crowd. In the Hypnomart watching and voyeurism are inextricable. Whether the subjects of surveillance are shopping in a trance or enacting compulsive rituals for the cameras, sometimes they align themselves in patterns like microbes or herds, or create dances that last mere seconds. Background Information HYPNOMART was devised by artists Joe Magee and Alistair Gentry, who met at one of PVA's LabCulture brainstorming sessions in Bridport, Dorset. It was commissioned in 2000 by the Arts Council of England and Channel 4 for their 'Animate' scheme. 'Characters' were selected from hours of digital video footage and removed from their original environments using Apple Macintosh computers. Loops of movements and behaviours were generated. The mall was then re-populated and reorganised to create a bizarre, yet logical new environment. Sampled sounds from the mall were similarly selected, manipulated and reorganised. The artists were committed to making their first film using only digital technology. With no proposed plot and little precedent for this type of work, the commissioning bodies and the artists themselves were in a constant state of development and discovery. HYPNOMART was entirely conceived, shot, edited, produced and processed by Magee and Gentry. The resulting work reflects this intensive, convoluted process. It also reflects both artists' interest in and explorations of cultural transmission: the 'viral' transmission of human behaviour. In this instance the artists chose to examine these forces in commercial environments.

He reacts like your mum reading a book, when you show her your drawing and her x-ray vision enables you to appraise your drawing without looking up.
I am ranting and you don't explain rants.
They float away from each other like a double helix broken into two single strands of nucleotides. They become something new by accumulating all the things they can no longer be. He keeps on calling her, even though she's told him on several occasions to please be finished with her. His grammar is often bad; he uses (for example) 'obsolete' as a verb. He suggests deviant sexual conduct in a violent context. After these scenes they are both trembly and smoke cigarettes. Marlboro Lights for her, Silk Cut 100s for him.
