"I like to have fun with my books, and I love to draw people. I play around with form a lot and sometimes people say I don't draw realistically, but I think my work is very realistic. Kids in schools do remark on my style; they ask why I draw big heads, little hands. So I say to them, ‘Don't you know anyone with small hands or a big head?', and they do." (Marie-Louise Gay quoted in "The Art of the Children's Book Illustrator: Eight Leading Artists Talk about their Work", , volume 51, no. 10, October 1985. Toronto: Key Publishers, 1985. P. 6.) In 1984, Marie-Louise Gay won the Canada Council Children's Literature Prize for illustration in both the English-language ( Lizzy's Lion written by Dennis Lee) and the French-language categories ( ). This unprecedented feat suggests the wide appeal of her charming and whimsical illustrations. Born in Quebec City, her family moved frequently throughout her childhood, resulting in Marie-Louise Gay's ease in both French and English. She attended Montreal's Institute of Graphic Arts and, for several years, did editorial illustration for various Canadian magazines. After illustrating Bertrand Gauthier's children's book Hou Ilva

Marie-Louise Gay Marie-Louise Gay was born in Quebec City, on June 17, 1952. As a child she lived in Sherbrooke, Montreal, Oakville and Vancouver but Gay eventually moved back to Montreal, where she now lives. As a child, she found it difficult to adjust to so many new and different environments. With the encouragement of her parents, who accompanied her on weekly trips to the library, Gay found solace in reading. Ironically, despite being a great reader, Gay found little interest in the books' illustrations. As a child Gay herself did not draw very much. She began drawing out of boredom when she was seventeen and having difficulties in school, sketching in the margins of her notebooks before moving on to using full pages. Her mother suggested she turn her interest into an asset instead of wasting her time and Gay discovered that she wanted a career in the visual arts field She began her training at The Institute of Graphic Arts of Montreal but found graphic art too restraining and as a result moved to courses at The Montreal Museum School of Fine Art. As a student, she worked on professional cartoon strips and editorial illustrations. She also began taking her portfolio around to various publishers until she found one that was willing to publish her work. When she was twenty-six, Gay decided to further her education in illustration at The Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Gay enjoyed the experience so much that she stayed for three years instead of the expected one. During her last two years in San Francisco, she worked hard to sell her drawings to publishers of educational books. This experience was very important in defining her unique style with its bright colours and sketchy design. Gay attributes the change of using bright colours to the sunny climate of California. However, Gay could not identify with a San Franciscan lifestyle. After a few years there, she began to long for a place that felt like a home. She needed a connection to her history and roots, so she moved back to Montreal.

Marie-Louise Gay
Marie-Louise Gay's two dozen picture books run the gamut of children's literature, from the playful S tella, Star of the Sea , to the Faustian Rumpelstiltskin . No story is too dark or too irrelevant for children, she says; she lightened the Grimm Brothers' tale by making their villain a snaggle-toothed sorcerer trailing bones and spider webs. By contrast, Stella was inspired by Gay's playful childhood memories of the sea.
Gay is a frequent visitor to schools across the country, where she reads to children and meets those who enjoy her stories. Although the Quebec City-born author didn't begin drawing until she was sixteen, she is now one of Canada's leading illustrators. She lives in Montreal.

Marie-Louise Gay is the award-winning Canadian author/illustrator of popular children's books such as Rainy Day Magic Angel and the Polar Bear (Stoddart, 1988), Willy Nilly (Stoddart, 1990), and Fat Charlie's Circus This live-action video, available in French or English, introduces the viewer to Marie-Louise Gay's stories and the characters in them. Exerpts from several of Gay's books including Mademoiselle Moon , to be published in 1991, illustrate various aspects of Gay's work. Gay is shown at work in her studio, reading to school children, and at home with her family. Voice-over narration alternates with Gay's own voice as she tells us how her stories are inspired by events from her own childhood as well as by her children. She explains how she works with the illustrations and the text in putting together a story. She talks about her characters; it is very important to Gay to portray real kids that readers identify with. Then there are the secret plots echoing the main plot portrayed by amusing animal characters but given a hilarious twist in
