NUMBER: QUOTATION: When I was a young girl salmon fishing with my father in the Straits of Juan de Fuca in Washington State I used to lean out over the water and try to look past my own face, past the reflection of the boat, past the sun and darkness, down to where the fish were surely swimming. I made up charm songs and word-hopes to tempt the fish, to cause them to mean biting my hook. I believed they would do it if I asked them well and patiently and with the right hope. I am writing my poems like this. I have used the fabric and the people of my life as the bait.

A Conversation with Tess Gallagher
July 10, 1997

Tess Gallagher does her writing at Sky House, the home she designed and built for herself in Washington state. Situated in Port Angeles, where she was born, overlooking the landscape of her childhood, Sky House is a carefully constructed study springing from a complicated web of past and present. Here Gallagher attends to history much as she does in her poems and stories by honoring intricate temporal relationships.
Gallagher's books of poems, essays, and short stories alternately serious, funny, and melancholy include Under Stars A Concert of Tenses The Lover of Horses Moon Crossing Bridge My Black Horse: New and Selected Poems Portable Kisses (1996), and At the Owl Woman Saloon , due out September, 1997, from which her story "The Poetry Baron" ( Atlantic , July, 1997) is taken. In addition to co-authoring two screenplays with her late husband, Raymond Carver, she also contributed to the making of the Robert Altman film, Short Cuts , based on Carver's stories.
A recipient of numerous literary awards and teaching positions, Gallagher, who during the academic year 1996-97 was the Edward F. Arnold Visiting Professor of English at Whitman College, will serve as Poet-in-Residence at Bucknell University for the spring semester of 1998.

Interview with Tess Gallagher
Listen to the Tess Gallagher interview with Don Swaim, 1986 (24 min. 26 sec.) In this 1986 interview with Don Swaim, Tess Gallagher talks about growing up as the child of a logger in the Pacific Northwest. She remembers the stillness of the forests and the larger-than-life images of the trees. Remembering the past forms the basis of many of her poems. She reads her poem, "Sudden Journey" and talks about the influence of her husband, Raymond Carver, on her writing. It's all right to be a little lost when reading poems, says Tess Gallagher. It's not necessary to understand everything. It's important not to lose a sense of the unknown. Poems don't always give themselves all at once. Download Free RealPlayer

http://www.carvezine.com/Gallagher Interview.htm
Return to Table of Contents An Afternoon With Tess Gallagher Tess Gallagher is one of the most beloved and widely read authors in the world today. She has a dozen books in print and has received numerous awards and honorary degrees. She has taught at major universities, produced a screenplay with Robert Altman, heard one of her short stories read on stage by actress Meryl Streep, and seen her poetry translated into Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Romanian, Swedish, Dutch, and German. She was even married to the great American short story writer, Raymond Carver. But ask her about her writing career, and she’ll tell youwithout hint of complaintthat the trip was not easy. This interview was conducted Friday, February 23rd, 2001, at Tess' home in Port Angeles, Washington. Melvin Sterne : Maybe the place to start is to ask you how you got started as a writer, what it was like for you in the early days, what you did to masterand I mean thatmaster your craft. You are both a poet and an accomplished short story writer. What was it like? What did you do? What advice might you offer to emerging writers? Tess Gallagher : Well I started out to be a journalist in this town where I was born, Port Angeles, when I was sixteen. I worked for the downtown paper. When I was seventeen I went away to college, to the University of Washington, and I enrolled in classes with a journalism emphasis. I was crazy about poetry from my high school days, and I got fascinated with the idea of being in Theodore Rothke’s class, so I was brazen enough to put poems forward and to ultimately be taken into that class. And after that, I think journalism just didn’t have a chance. There was just such a level of intensity and, the sense that this man, Theodore Roethke, had dedicated his life in the way. People came to him, who loved poetry, and these were the people I found around metheir respect for him and love of poetryit was quite a bouquet to find yourself admitted into that company.

E squire Senior Editor Jay Woodruff met Raymond Carver and his wife, poet Tess Gallagher, nearly fifteen years ago, and he remained in touch with Tess following Carver's death in 1988. But it was only early this year that Tess told Jay she finally felt up to the task of going through the papers in Carver's desk at home. She invited Jay to assist her in organizing and assessing what they found. "I arrived at their house in Port Angeles on a Monday morning," Jay says, "and Tess and I spent several hours going through folders she pulled from his desk. They were full of notes and fragments, partial stories and false starts. I soon resigned myself to the fact that we weren't going to make the kind of 'Eureka!' discovery I'd hoped for. I was sitting on the couch, puzzling over Carver's scrawl on some scrap of paper, when I heard Tess say, 'I wonder what's in here.' She opened a drawer and said, 'Oh.' "The drawer contained eight or ten folders. We sat on the couch and read. The writing was vintage Carver - the dead-on directness, the deceptively simple sentences, the precision, the repetition. In all we found three complete manuscripts, each a wonderful story, conceived and drafted by Carver in his mature years, when he was at the height of his powers. What follows is an excerpt. The full text of "Kindling" appears in the July Issue of Esquire, and will be followed by the two remaining stories over the next few months.
