- Northrop Frye, Words With Power
Northrop Frye was one of the most eminent scholars and thinkers in Canadian history. His first book, Fearful Symmetry (1947), a highly original study of the poetry of William Blake, is considered a classic critical work and garnered great praise for Frye. But it was with the publication of Anatomy of Criticism (1957), his immensely influential treatise on literary symbolism and structure, that he rose to international prominence as a literary theorist. In the wake of the Anatomy, one distinguished American critic referred to him as "the foremost living student of Western literature." In the years following, he was to write more than twenty books on Western literature, culture, myth and archetypal theory , religion and social thought. In 1982, he published The Great Code: The Bible and Literature, the first of his two landmark works on the relationship between the Bible and Western literature, which made the best-seller lists in Canada. Words With Power (1990), the companion volume, appeared just months before Frye's death in 1991. While many contemporary critics regard Frye's theories as having a distinguished obsolecence, the number of academic conferences and books on his work that appear yearly indicate that it is still highly relevant and that interest in his thinking continues unabated.

This article submitted by M. Cuddy-Keane on 4/16/97.
Discuss the opposing impulses in Northrop Frye's educational theory of, on the one hand, a defence for the discipline of "English" as a distinct, specialized area of study and, on the other hand, a vision of literature as socially, culturally, ethically relevant to the whole of life. In what way does the first approach reveal Frye's attempt to legitimize "English" in terms that meet the prevailing criteria for scientific study (objectivity, logicality, empiricism)? In what way does the second approach reveal his links with the tradition of 19th-century humanism? Think about such aspects as the "contents" of literary study (what we study when we study literature), the nature of literary language as compared to other uses of language, and the effects and significance of literary study for the individual and for society. Northrop Frye, Simulation,
And the Creation of a "Human World In 1964, the literary critic Northrop Frye published a short book, titled The Educated Imagination , in which he tried to summarize his ideas on the relevance of literature to life. In it, he asserted that we all find ourselves confronting a world of nature, which is oblivious to our values and desires. It is a world that is inhuman in shape, manifesting no larger intelligence or morality that we can discern. Our response to this experience, Frye said, is to turn nature into a "human world" that looks more like home. Although he expresses it somewhat differently, it is obvious from the text that he believed we create this "human world" a number of ways. One way we do so is by reconstructing our physical environment, replacing it with something of our own design. We build roads, farms, cities, and so on. Another way we do so is by producing literature, which allows us to explore alternative models of human experience. Here, instead of re-creating physical reality in our own image, we invent fictional versions of reality that let us see a vision of the world as we can imagine it and as we want it to be.* The collection of essays that follows examines what has become of our effort to create what Northrop Frye referred to as a human world as we approach the last years of the twentieth century. It describes the way we are beginning to fulfill a dream that is at least as old as civilization, by learning how to control nature or physical reality, and also create believable simulations of reality that are, in essence, new kinds of fiction.

Polemical Introduction
Frye, Northrop
[1912- ] - Canadian literary critic, b. Quebec. In 1948 he was appointed professor of English at Victoria College, of which he later became principal [1959-66]. He is the author of FEARFUL SYMMETRY [1947], an authoritative study of William Blake's symbolism and religious mysticism, and of ANATOMY OF CRITICISM [1957], a synoptic view of the principles and techniques of literary criticism. His other major works include THE WELL-TEMPERED CRITIC [1963] and two collections of his lectures: A NATURAL PERSPECTIVE [1965] and THE MODERN CENTURY [1967]. Frye edited ROMANTICISM RECONSIDERED [1968], a collection of lectures. See study by Ronald Bates [1971]. [Harris, William H., and Judith S. Levey, eds. The New Columbia Encyclopedia. New York and London: Columbia University Press, 1975.]
This book consists of "essays," in the word's original sense of a trial or incomplete attempt, on the possibility of a synoptic view of the scope, theory, principles, and techniques of literary criticism. The primary aim of the book is to give my reasons for believing in such a synopic view; its secondary aim is to provide a tentative version of it which will make enough sense to convince my readers that a view, of the kind that I outline, is attainable. p. 3 The gaps in the subject as treated here are too enormous for the book ever to be regarded as presenting my system, or even my theory. It is to be regarded rather as an interconnected group of suggestions which it is hoped will be of some practical use to critics and students of literature. Whatever is of no practical use to anybody is expendable. My approach is based on Matthew Arnold's precept of letting the mind play freely around a subject in which there has been much endeavor and little attempt at perspective. p. 3

Alvin A. Lee, Robert Denham (eds). The Legacy of Northrop Frye University of Toronto Press, 1994. 353 pages.
The Legacy of Northrop Frye is a well written and very readable collection of essays exploring (as the title suggests) the legacy of Northrop Frye. The 29 essays, the Poem "Norrie Banquet Ode," and the auditory masque "In the Middle of Ordinary Noise" were originally presented at an international conference, "The Legacy of Northrop Frye," held at Victoria College in the University of Toronto between October 29 and 31 1992. The Legacy of Northrop Frye refuses to monopolize the memory of Frye, suggesting instead a variety of possible legacies. It leaves the reader wanting to learn more about the man and the" fearful symmetries" that haunt his writing. For instance, the work includes contributions as diverse as Deanne Bogdan's application of her cycle of" initiation, separation and return" to Frye's /pp. 4-5/ theories, Sandra Djwa's piece telling of Frye's relationship to Pratt and of the poet's effect on the theorist's perception of nature, Clara Thomas' comparison of Margaret Laurence and Frye, and Eleanor Cook's discussion of Wallace Stevens' enigma and Frye. Although these last two pieces seem to deal mostly with Laurence and Stevens, with only lip service paid to the theorist, they are not out of place in this collection since they open another window on Frye.

This essay titled "Northrop Frye, Simulation, and the Creation of a 'Human World'" is part of a series of essays hosted by Transparency Now, an organization whose mission is "to make things clear." BIOGRAPHY Born in Quebec, Northrop Frye was one of the most influential literary critics of the twentieth century. Frye graduated with honors in English and philosophy from Victoria College, University of Toronto, in 1933. Thereafter he studied theology at Emmanuel College and was ordained in the United Church of Canada in 1936. In 1939, he returned to teach at Victoria College, where he remained until his death. Frye was highly decorated for his work by the Canadian government, earning the Governor General's Literary Award and the Toronto Arts Lifetime Award in 1987. In addition, he held thirty-eight honorary doctorates from universities around the world. Frye's Fearful Symmetry: A Study of William Blake (1947) was a landmark study of Blake's visionary symbolism. [first published in The Journal of the American Academy of Religion (JAAR) Winter 1994]
Steven Marx Cal Poly University
Words With Power was published in 1990; it is the last of forty books of literary criticism written by its author, Northrop Frye, who died in January 1991 at the age of 78. A recent survey of 950 journals reveals that he remains the eighth most frequently cited author in the arts and humanities, among a company that includes Aristotle, Shakespeare and Freud. A bibliography of his work and and commentaries on it published in 1987 contains 2500 entries. As is suggested by this growing body of commentary, the criticism that Frye produced is not only literary but literature itself, and is likely to survive as long as some of its subjects.
Frye started his career as a divinity student and a preacher in the United Church of Canada, but then took an M.A. in English literature at Oxford and wrote his Master's thesis on the romantic poet and painter, William Blake. His first book, published in 1947 under the title, Fearful Symmetry , revealed an original and complex mythological system of thought in the prophetic works which had previously been regarded as Blake's incomprehensible lunatic ravings. He also showed that the sources of Blake's vision could be found in a literary tradition that stemmed from the Bible and that Blake's lifelong project was to produce his own revised and updated version of the Scriptures.
