Fleming spent some years with British Intelligence, but his books are far from reality - they offer colorful locations, beautiful women, and exciting and inventive adventures. Nowadays the character of James Bond is as integral part of the popular culture as Winnie-the-Pooh or Tarzan. Although Bond's attitude toward's women is considered dated, the books have not lost their popularity. "It was a dark, clean-cut face, with a three-inch scar showing whitely down the sunburned skin of the right cheek. The eyes were wide and level under straight, rather long black brows. The hair was black, parted on the left, and carelessly brushed so that a thick black comma fell down over the right eyebrow. The longish straight nose ran down to a short upper lip below which was a wide and finely drawn but cruel mouth. The line of jaw was straight and firm. A section of dark suit, white short and black knitted tie completed the picture." (James Bond in From Russia, with Love

IAN FLEMING Author Fleming is the creator of the fictional superspy James Bond . Bond is a suave, lady-killing British agent who travels the globe, battles super-villains bent on world domination, and famously prefers his vodka martinis "shaken, not stirred." After publishing his first Bond adventure, Casino Royale , in 1953, Fleming wrote one Bond book each year until his death. The stories spawned a highly profitable movie series which continued into the 21st century, with Sean Connery and Roger Moore the most famous actors to play Bond. Fleming also wrote a series of travel books and the popular children's story Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The Man Behind James Bond
By Andrew Lycett

Review by Tony Buchsbaum
His name was Fleming, Ian Fleming. And the character he created in a small house in Jamaica was a hero for all the world. Now, for the first time in 30 years, Ian Fleming is the subject of a new biography by Andrew Lycett. Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond is a detailed, intimate look behind the scenes, and behind the mask of a man who lived a life of privilege and high expectations, a life in which cars went fast-and women went faster. Fleming was the son of a stockbroker who helped raise the capital for the Atcheson, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad. After Valentine Fleming was killed in World War I, his sons and their mother flitted through London society. Ian learned both the spoken language and body language of the high life, and these would forever color his perspective, attitude, and actions. After brief periods as a stockbroker and reporter, Fleming was drafted into the secret service. MI5 offered him the chance to use his social graces, his intimate knowledge of liquor and women, and his fascination with cars and all things mechanical. As a spy, he made a name for himself as a man who could get things done-dangerous things. In time, he became a member of the group who created the prototype organization for the CIA. He even met with John F. Kennedy to discuss plans to embarrass Castro and generate his fall from power. Not until after his wedding, on honeymoon in Jamaica, did Fleming begin writing fiction. In

16. Commanders Club | Ian Fleming's Jamaica
A detailed tour of ian fleming's Jamaica by the Commanders Club, with many photographs of the area and from the Bond films.
http://www.commanders.com/flemings_jamaica/main.html
In 1997 the Commanders Club celebrated its tenth year as the singular entity involved in preservation and celebration of Ian Fleming's 007. Looking back over 10 years of such an organisation invariably leads one's thoughts to Jamaica, the cradle of 007. There Fleming wrote all 13 of the Bond novels while escaping the drab English winters and the "serious" literary set entertained by his wife Anne. The first of these thrillers, Casino Royale was a way for Fleming to get his mind off the pending end of his bachelorhood at the age of 43, tapping away on a manual Remington in his detached office on the grounds of Goldeneye, the home he built on Jamaica's North Coast at the end of World War II. Jamaica gave Fleming the balance of privacy and stimulation needed to sustain the killing pace of any invention that becomes a global sensation. Along with writing all the Bond novels there, Fleming set major parts of three of them Dr. No Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun in country. Fleming's love of authentic detail closes the loop in making Bond come alive, and at the same time that detail gives the dozens of real locations in 007's career a sense of marvelous fiction. But if there is any one place to walk with James Bond, Jamaica is it . . yet how much of an echo is left or has it all died out? It was time to go back into the past . . To meet Fleming in Jamaica.

The Name's Fleming - Ian Fleming In the first article in this series , the work of World War II British Secret Service leader William Stephenson, "Intrepid", was discussed. Another well-known character from this milieu was Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Fleming wrote twelve James Bond novels between 1952 and 1964. The movies have been produced since 1962. Fleming was plucked out of newspaper work to join British Naval Intelligence in 1939, when Churchill was still the First Lord of the Admiralty in Chamberlain's government. He became an aide to the Director of Naval Intelligence, Admiral John Godfrey, and was known as "17F". He was trained at Intrepid's "Camp X", on Lake Ontario in Canada, where he became practised at underwater demolition. He rose to the rank of Commander. With the Director, he met with J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI, in 1941, and had some influence in the establishment of the OSS, the forerunner of the CIA. Fleming was typical of the Intelligence agents of his time, and thus archetypical of Bond, his creation. He came from a family of class, independent wealth, and a history of service. He attended the right schools, but did not excel. As his access to the family wealth was somewhat restricted, and he felt unable to live in this shadow, he struck out to develop his own fortunes. He travelled and read widely, and enjoyed the good life, working in journalism and banking. Intrepid did not select daredevils as his agents. He found that "Some of the best agents are those who in peacetime make good bankers, physicians, or creative artists" - someone with great energy, but full self-control.
