Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq thebobcooper@ Valentine Not a red rose or a satin heart. I give you an onion. It is a moon wrapped in brown paper. It promises light like the careful undressing of love. Here. It will blind you with tears like a lover. It will make your reflection a wobbling photo of grief. I am trying to be truthful. Not a cute card or kissogram. I give you an onion. Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips, possessive and faithful as we are, for as long as we are. Take it. Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring, if you like. Lethal. Its scent will cling to your fingers, cling to your knife. Carol Ann Duffy

Poetry in Preston Review carol ann duffy and Gillian Clarke Live Review, Bothcarol ann duffy and Gillian Clarke are poets who are none too fond of cliche.

Live Review:
Myth, reality and redeeming the language
Both Carol Ann Duffy and Gillian Clarke are poets who are none too fond of cliche. They may both be award winning and studied on exam syllabuses nationwide, but their poetry bears none of the hallmarks of establishment stuffiness. Introducing her poem 'On the Train' at the live reading at Preston's St.Peters Arts Centre Clarke said: "I think it's a poet's job to redeem the language, the cliche as well." It had been a response to the Paddington train crash. There are few cliches better known than the commuter barking "I'm on the train" into a mobile phone, parodied ad infinitum on Dom Jolly's satirical TV show 'Trigger Happy TV'. The audience sat silently, mindful of the recent fatal Selby train crash, as Clarke read a poem which brought the impersonal cliche of mobile phone recorded messages into chilling human focus. Duffy too, turned her acerbic wit to the cliche which some literature contributes to the language.

PRAYER
Carol Ann Duffy. British. B 1955
For those not familiar with the ritual of the Shipping Forecast - that's Rockall. Malin. Dogger. Finisterre.
Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer
utters itself. So a woman will lift
her head from the sieve of her hands and stare
at the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift. Some nights, although we are faithless, the truth
enters our hearts, that small familiar pain;
then a man will stand stock-still, hearing his youth

Stealing - Carol Ann Duffy - Study Notes. for the text of all Duffy's poems click here Starts with a question in line 1 - interacts with audience - challenges and gains interest "Midnight" - image of darkness, night - links to perceptions of thieves and night-time. "mute" - silence and unanswering, personification of object that is the snowman. No interaction with this except on physical level (identifies narrator's social difficulties?) "mate" - friend/sexual partner/soulmate? - narrator able to identify with the inanimate snowman. Their minds are compares in simile form as both being cold like ice - cold mind, reserved, indifferent, uncaring of people's reactions to his/her actions. "Better off dead" - identifies own moral structure, that taking what you want to take is acceptable - outside mores of society. This is character's way of life, stealing for the thrill, to feel alive. Lines 7-9 - Difficulty of stealing and moving the snowman illustrates and enhances the feeling of futility in the narrator's actions. Huge effort to steal something that has no monetary worth. The snowman's only value lies within the feelings that it invokes in both the thief and the victims. "fierce chill"

in mid-Glamorgan
where I ordered up
two halves of Dark Brains

The Salmon Carol Ann Duffy
'... one of the freshest and bravest talents to emerge in British poetry any poetry for years.' Eavan Boland '... she could well become the representative poet of the present day.' Sean O'Brien The Salmon Carol Ann Duffy contains poetry chosen specially for Salmon Poetry by Carol Ann Duffy from her last four volumes and includes some work from The World's Wife (Picador 1999, Anvil Special Edition 1999) and some uncollected recent work. Carol Ann's mother is Irish and her grandparents come from Carlow and Hackestown. Carol Ann Duffy is not only one of the most popular poets writing and performing today, but one of the most important of all post-war British poets. Her poems provide voices for an extraordinary number of contemporary characters, from frazzled housewives, and the shabby genteel stewing in their repressions to nervy young delinquents, a fairground psychopath and disinherited American Indians. Many of Carol Ann Duffyís poems relect on time, change and loss. In dramatizing scenes of childhood, adolescence and adult life, whether personal or public, contemporary or historical, she discovers moments of consolation through love, memory and language. She explores not only everyday experiences, but places we visit in our fantasies, memories and imagination.
