AN INDEX TO DR SEUSS: CHARACTERS AND UNUSUAL CREATURES
by Ray Hamel
NOTE: I have been receiving a lot of mail recently related to Dr. Seuss. This page was originally one of many articles I wrote for Trivia Quotient. I am not a Dr. Seuss expert, so please don't expect me to answer any questions about his life and work.
With millions of books in print, and nearly all of his 50-plus titles still available for sale, Dr. Seuss was, up until his untimely death in 1991, probably the most prolific living writer behind Barbara Cartland. In fact, his GREEN EGGS AND HAM is the third largest selling book in the English language. Born Theodor Geisel in 1904, Dr. Seuss has lent his talent to advertising campaigns of the 1940s, political cartoons for PM, and a 1935 comic strip for Hearst publications called HEJJI, about a young lad's travels through the mythical land of Baako. Commendations awarded to Seuss include an Academy Award for best documentary short subject of 1945 for his writing and production of the propaganda piece YOUR JOB IN GERMANY (aka HITLER LIVES). He also wrote (but did not create) GERALD McBOING-BOING, a 1951 Oscar-winning cartoon. Seuss was awarded an honorary Pulitzer Prize in 1984 citing his half-century contribution to "the education and enjoyment of America's children and their parents." Following is a list of Seuss's books, with a numbered index to the names of characters and unusual creatures found within them. Six of the books were not indexed; others contained no pertinent characters or creatures to index. THE TOUGH COUGHS AS HE PLOWS THE DOUGH is a collection of Seuss's work in advertising and political cartoons, and as such also is not indexed.

. Bringing children's literature to your workshop, conference and classroom.
This year is the fortieth anniversary of The Cat in the Hat Hardcover Library Binding Bilingual Spanish Cassette ) and that makes this a good opportunity to take a look at the contributions of Dr. Seuss. He began writing children's books in the 40s and most of them are still in print and even though he has been a favorite of several generations of children, it is only in recent years that children's literature writers and critics have even deigned to mention his name. No one has ever claimed that Seuss was a great poet, although many of his books use rhyme. Few would hold him up as one of the great illustrators yet neither can they deny his talent and capacity for creating delight in millions of readers. First, a few facts about his life: Dr. Seuss was born Theodore Geisel in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father was the curator of Forest Park Zoo. After graduating from Dartmouth College, Geisel launched a career in advertising, creating ads for Flit, an insecticide produced by Standard Oil. These ads consisted of a cartoon drawing of people enjoying a relaxing time reading or resting only to have a grotesque bug-like creature approach. The caption always read, "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" Looking at those cartoons today, you can see the seeds of the creatures that would later appear in his children's books.

Dr. Seuss
"A person's a person no matter how small," Theodor (no, it isn't 'Theodore') Geisel , a.k.a. Dr Seuss (I have read that he pronounced it "Soice", think voice) would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted." Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. And in the process, he helped them to read. Dr Seuss Books Books About Dr Seuss The Seuss Shop Hardcover ... Paperback Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Seuss (his mother's maiden name) Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University he began a career in advertising. His advertising campaigns, especially the "Quick Henry the Flit!" cartoons for a fly pesticide, became nationally famous. The "Boids and Beasties," which he drew for a series of Judge stories, were precursors of the strangely shaped, silly animals that were to become the beloved Loraxes, Whos, and Zooks of later stories. A brief, rough biography of Dr. Seuss
Here is a brief, mostly correct, overview of Dr. Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, MA. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who he wed in 1927. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge , the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life Vanity Fair and Liberty . In some of his works, he'd made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" In 1936 on the way to a vaction in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to at least moderate success.

16. The Political Dr. Seuss
Examines seuss's political views shaped by World War II and illustrated in his cartoons.
http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/1aa/1aa291.htm
Springfield Library and Museums Association Springfield, MA http://www.quadrangle.org The Political Dr. Seuss A selection of little known World War II-era political cartoons by the famed children's author Dr. Seuss will be on display from March 11 through October 16, 2000 at the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum in the special exhibition The Political Dr. Seuss (left: Pay Your Income Tax Here , Political cartoon by Dr. Seuss, from the newspaper PM , May 27, 1942) More than 200 of the cartoons were assembled for the first time in the book Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geise l by Richard H. Minear. Minear is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and one of the country's leading historians of Japan during World War II. This exhibit, guest-curated by Minear, is based in part on his book and is the first exhibit to examine the political side of Dr. Seuss. Minear said that there is "a disconnect between what we usually think of as Dr. Seuss and the content of the cartoons." However, many Dr. Seuss's whimsical children's books also contain serious themes. Yertle the Turtle , for example, is a cautionary tale against dictators.

"A person's a person, no matter how small!" Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted." Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped kids learn to read. Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts , in 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. His advertising cartoons, featuring "Quick, Henry, the Flit!," appeared in leading American magazines. His first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , hit the market in 1937, and the world of children's literature was changed forever! In 1957, Seuss's The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House's best-selling series - Beginner Books. This popular series combines engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 childrens books, some of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world.

20. Cyber-Seuss The Officially Licensed Dr. Seuss Website
These started out being dr. seuss related cross word puzzles, but some people suggestedthat cross word puzzles may be too difficult for some younger audiences
http://www.afn.org/~afn15301/seussfiles/ws.html
Welcome to
Welcome to a new, and I hope fun, and useful section of Cyber-Seuss. The Cross-Word Search Puzzles! Before we get much more into this entire Cross-Word Search thing, let me tell you why its here. Before I got my license with Dr. Seuss Enterprises Inc. I had many online stories, but being as that was a direct copright infringment, they had to be removed. Along with them leaving went much of the content I had for kids. I was left with very little for kids other than links. I wanted something, and this is what I came up with. These started out being Dr. Seuss related cross word puzzles, but some people suggested that cross word puzzles may be too difficult for some younger audiences. So I thought about doing straight word search puzzles, but I didn't think that was quite right either. So I took the best of both worlds, and offer to you Cross-Words Search puzzles. Here is the deal. You are given a set of questions like those from cross word puzzles, whose answers are hidden in a grid of letters like word search puzzles. So if you can not figure out the answer it is possible to find them in the puzzle, and plug them into the blank. So far these puzzles are broken down into 3 difficulty levels as such: Level 1 - Easy Level 1 is the easiest of the levels. The questions are mostly made up of Dr. Seuss story titles, and the grid is only 10x10. There are no backwards words and only 10 questions. This one should be easily completed by most kids who can do normal word search puzzles.
