Mark Twain and John Dos Passos On War Mark Twain an John Dos Passos have similar viewpoints of war in their writings, although Twain is a traditional 19 th century fiction writer, and Dos Passos is a modernist of the Harlem Renaissance; from Twain, The War Prayer , and Dos Passos, The Body of an American A personal biography, of sorts, is necessary to understand the political climates each writer faced, and also their own political viewpoints. Twain wrote The War Prayer in response to the Spanish/American war. Having written works such as Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Lauter, 213) Had Twain not been such a popular author, his later texts, including , may have gone unnoticed, however, they are now considered by many to be his best. (Lauter, 213) The writings of John Dos Passos are heavily influenced by his experience with war in The Great War, now known as World War I, where he volunteered as an ambulance driver. Schooled in the traditional ways, and eventually attending Harvard University, Dos Passos was obviously affected. World War I left many with the aura of hopelessness, as entire cities and cultures were destroyed. A sense of fracture and incompleteness are expressed in writings of the period. Dos Passos, too, left a sense of dazed bewilderment is his writings.

The City in Wartime By JOHN DOS PASSOS I. The West Faces East It was the foggy end of a drizzly day. Along the lunch counter of the Ferry Dock Tavern gray-haired men in overalls and leather jackets were eating oyster stew. A set of hamburgers sizzling on the electric plate sent little wisps of the smell of scorched beef up through the cigarette smoke. From outside, through the loosely slapped together boards of the frame building, came the hoots and howls of steamboat whistles. Through every crevice the fog seeped into the tavern, bringing with it a tang of rotting evergreens and giving faint ruddy halos to the bare electric light bulbs. Against the window-panes and the glass of the door the white fog pressed snugly as flannel. In front of me a stocky black-jowled man in a tightly buttoned pea jacket was addressing a very young blank-faced sailor who sat on the next stool with his blue pancake cap pushed far down on his forehead.

The blue- a gray patrol boat showed white teeth as it chewed its way seaward into the long swells. Still no black heads of sea lions bobbing around Seal Rocks... A few gulls circled screaming over the platform. school kids, and were giggling and horsing and pushing each other around. A sergeant of Marines, very snappy in his greens, strutted out of the building that houses the slot machines; a girl with a blue handkerchief tied round her yellow head was holding onto his arm with both hands. For a couple of minutes the two of them stared hard out to sea as if their eyes could pierce the fog bank. Then they hurried back indoors to the slot machines. In the restaurant on the level above, the tables are all full but the eaters are very quiet. There are many family parties. Old people and middle- aged people brooding around a young man or woman in uniform. cropped black bullet head and ruddy cheeks who looks barely old enough to be in high school. The minute you see them you know that the old people have come to say good- possessed. The father is always starting to tell little jokes and neglecting to finish them. They keep forgetting where the salt cellar is on the table. The mother handles the plate of rolls when she passes it round as if it were immensely breakable. They fork the food slowly into their mouths. None of them knows what he is eating. All their motions are very careful and precise as if they feared the slightest false move would break the fragile bonds that are holding the day together for them. The slightest fumble, and these last few hours will be spilt and lost.

And he got into trouble over it. When he assigned Dos Passos's U.S.A. to his freshmen, some students and parents objected and the matter went to the dean. "Apparently few of us had ever read anything stronger than Little Women, " wrote one undergraduate. He defended his selection in a lengthy letter, as usual covering all bases. John Dos Passos on Randolph Bourne (from U.S.A. 1946) Randolph Bourne
came as an inhabitant of this earth
without the pleasure of choosing his dwelling or his career.
He was a hunchback, grandson of a congregational minister, born in 1886 in Bloomfield, New Jersey; there he attended grammer school and high school. At the age of seventeen he went to work as a secretary to a Morristown businessman. He worked his way through Columbia working in a pianola record factory in Newark, working as proofreader, painotuner, accompanist in a vocal studio in Carnegie Hall. At Columbia he studied with John Dewey, got a traveling fellowship that took him to England Paris Rome Berlin Copenhagen, wrote a book on the Gary schools. In Europe he heard music, a great deal of Wagner and Scriabine
and bought himself a black cape. This little sparrowlike man,
tiny twisted bit of flesh in a black cape,
always in pain and ailing,
put a pebble in his sling
and hit Goliath square in the forehead with it.
War , he wrote, is the health of the state.
