DEANE, Seamus. Reading in the Dark.
NY: Knopf, 1997. Uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of this highly praised novel of coming of age in Ireland in the 1940's and 1950's. Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize and short-listed for the Booker Prize. Bulging where Knopf's Winter publication list has been laid in; else fine in wrappers with cover art stapled inside front cover. Much scarcer than the advance reading copy that was issued in pictorial wrappers. Corelli's Mandolin. NY: Pantheon (1994). Advance reading copy of the American edition of his most recent book, published to enormous critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. Fine in wrappers and publisher's slipcase, and signed by the author DeLILLO, Don. Underworld. [Hollywood: Paramount, 1997]. The photocopied typescript of the most recent DeLillo novel, submitted for motion picture consideration prior to publication, and prior to the creation of bound uncorrected proofs. 8 1/2" x 11". 1414 pages, claspbound in six sections, in cardstock covers bearing the name of the production company. The text is double-spaced, printed on rectos only, and reproduces several small holograph corrections. Title and author written on spines; fine. DeLillo's new novel, which reportedly runs to 800 pages in the published edition, has been causing a considerable word-of-mouth stir prior to publication, and has been said to be far more ambitious and more accomplished than any of his earlier worka substantial comment for one who has won the National Book Award and has been considered, for years, one of the preeminent American novelists. This is an extremely early state of the book, and the unwieldiness of the six-volume format would suggest that very few copies would have been done thus.

I thought it one of the Best Novels of All Time
Okay, okay, quiet down now, I got a joke for you. Stop me if you've heard this one: An Irish guy walks into a bar, right? Gets blind drunk, smashes up some things, goes home, and pawns his woman's stuff to get more money to buy booze. Wait, it gets better. She gets mad, he smacks her, and she leaves eventually. He pawns the rest of her stuff, gets drunk, and finds another woman who has sex with him and falls in love with him. You don't think it was funny? Well you are wrong. I've just revealed the plot of The Ginger Man , one of the top 100 novels of all time. According to The New Yorker it was "A triumph of comic writing." Wait, it gets better... after this new woman falls in love with him, this Irish guy walks into a bar. Gets blind drunk, smashes up some things, goes home, and pawns this new woman's stuff to get more money to buy booze. She gets mad, he smacks her, and she leaves eventually. He pawns the rest of her stuff, gets drunk, and finds another woman who has sex with him and falls in love with him. You get the joke yet? Don't you like the protagonist? You should. After all, Time magazine says that he is "one of the most outrageous scoundrels in contemporary fiction" and that readers would come to love him for "his wild, fierce two-handed grasp for every precious second of life."
