Though published under a "fantasy" label, Charles and Terri Windling have come up with the term "mythic fiction" to more properly describe books such as these, which fall in the Interstitial realm between fantasy literature, and mainstream fiction with a magical realist bent.
Charles was born in the Netherlands (of Dutch, Spanish and Japanese heritage), then emigrated to Canada while still an infant. Due to his father's job as a surveyor, the family lived in a number of towns in Canada and spent three years in Turkey and Lebanon. Charles had originally intended to become a full-time musician; storytelling was something he did for his own pleasure. Friends encouraged him to send out his tales, and after selling a few of these and, eventually, a novel, he began to realize that writing was his true calling (although he still plays music). Mulengro: A Romany Tale
Reviewed June 2000 I read a couple of Charles de Lint's books prior to attending WisCon 24 last month, at which he was guest of honor. As a rule, I am not much of a fan of high fantasy or traditional fantasy elements such as faeries, so when rifling through a friend's collection of de Lint's books, I ended up picking the two which seemed least to have such elements. (It seems most of de Lint's books are modern or "urban" fantasy, which I guess makes him more akin to Tim Powers Mulengro is more properly a horror story than a fantasy tale, in any event: It involves the gypsy communities around Ottawa, Canada, who are being stalked by something superhuman, which seeks to purge the gypsies of those who are marhime , who have strayed too far from the gypsy ways. Most gypsies allow those who are marhime to spend time apart from the community as punishment until they are eventually let back in, but this man - dubbed "Mulengro" for his relationship with dead spirits - believes he's on a mission from God to eliminate them. Janfri Yayal is a young gypsy who has made money making records of his fiddle playing and whose house is burned down by Mulengro as the story begins. He is informed by an old magic woman that he will play a crucial role in the fight against Mulengro, as will a younger magic woman, Ola, who writes books with an anglo friend of hers about certain lore she knows. Also thrown into the mix are a pair of Ottawa policemen, Ola's friend Jeff and his friend Jackie, Janfri's brother in spirit Yojo, and an unreconstructed sixties hippie named Zach.

Charles De Lint's Biography Charles De Lint's List of Novels Back to the Hallway Back to the Map ... Back to Text List By: Jenn Ingram raven@qnet.com Charles De Lint's Biography Charles De Lint was born in Bussum, located in the Netherlands on December 22, 1951. His family emigrated to Canada that same year. He has lived in a number of places due to his father's job. First it was Britannia, then Western Canada, then Aylmer, Quebec, then Turkey and Lebanon. In later years, his father traveled alone and the rest of the family stayed in Lucerne. Today however, his reading tastes mainly include: Basil Johnston, Stephen King, Jeanette Winterson, Harlan Ellison, Barbara Kingsolver, Patricia McKillip, Andrew Vachss, Parke Godwin and any other author that pens of good book. When he was younger, he had never considered being a writer. Instead his lean was towards being a musician, who played Celtic music. For fourteen years after high school, that's exactly what he did. He worked in a record store during the day and played music on the weekends.

Charles de Lint
September 20, 1994
A musician and writer who was born as a Canadian citizen in the Netherlands, Charles de Lint established himself as a prolific writer of fantasy during the 1980s. More recently, he has also been a significant and original contributor to the subgenre of contemporary fantasy. A prolific writer, he is as comfortable with the short story as he is with the novelet, novella and novel. Since 1979, Charles de Lint has been the publisher and editor of Triskell Press in Ottawa, which has published numerous chapbooks in his Cerin Songweaver tales. In 1984, de Lint received the William L. Crawford Award for Best New Fantasy Author presented annually by the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, and, in 1988, the Casper Award for Best Work in English for his highly successful novel Jack, the Giant Killer . Since 1970, de Lint has also been active as a musician first in Wickentree, a Celtic band, and currently with another Celtic group, Jump at the Sun. "In his most successful novels, he has succeeded in fusing the kingdoms of Faery with modern Canadian landscapes, producing a variety of urban fantasy, which can be very satisfying to those who reject the notion that all such stories require a greenwood setting. And yet de Lint's early published fantasies were very much in that mould."

Charles De Lint's " Newford Chronicles
(Tor Fantasy Publishing)
These tales, told over the years in various thematic anthologies comprise a loose narrative web spun around the imaginary city of Newford. No two are alike, either in context or in style, and yet, the common denominator (except, that is for the places and people that creep up here and there and become subject to fond familiarity -much like the fixtures of our own cities) is the underbelly of what we perceive to be reality: when the night falls over the office buildings and the alleys, where homeless people squat in derelict houses, abandoned from our care, in the blink of an eye, and sometimes far too real, magic is there, same as it was always. De Lint tells us that the world really is as we saw it when we were children; all we have to do is open up our senses to it and embrace wonder. His heroes are ordinary, very real, very much "there", very much trying to make do.. Most of them don't have the luxury to believe in anything anymore, much less in magic.. But somewhere, deep in their innermost hearts, most of them keep an open window, just in case.. Most of us do. Well, some of them -and some of us- don't, they close that window tight; but it doesn't matter, because the wonder's still there. There are as many realities as there are ways to live one's life. The city itself has a soul, as a street busker timidly discovers, one night in a park.. She has to go though, her people have forgotten her, left her to decay. But he remembers.. Desert spirits might keep you company, cadging a smoke or playing the flute as you try to puzzle out the tangled threads of your life. ..There are some Roads that require guarding -even if it's only a part time job for a punk rocker.. And sometimes, if one dreams too strong, for too long, one might discover that one's dreams have a life of their own. ..And who's to say that it's less real than the waking one?
