Fielding Dawson Writer at the heart of America's postwar avant-garde Michael Hrebeniak
Friday April 5, 2002
The Guardian
The writer and visual artist Fielding Dawson, who has died aged 69, worked in two of the centres of the postwar American avant-garde - Black Mountain College, North Carolina, and New York - during a period of unparalleled confidence and fertility. At the age of eight, he moved from New York to Kirkwood, near St Louis, where his father worked as a journalist. His mother bought him a typewriter at 15, remarking, "We could use a new Saroyan." After taking portraiture classes with Tanasko Milovich at the St Louis school of fine art, he enrolled at Black Mountain College in 1949, alongside Robert Rauschenberg and Kenneth Noland, to study painting under Franz Kline and writing under Charles Olson. The college had been founded in 1933 as an experimental community of students and teachers, defying the crippling specialisation of industrial education. It blossomed with the arrival of the Bauhaus artists Josef and Anni Albers, refugees from Nazi Germany, and took an even more radical turn under Olson's rectorship in 1951. He guided a group of poets later bracketed under the name of the school - including Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Joel Oppenheimer, Ed Dorn and Dawson - several of whom returned to the college's Lake Eden campus to teach, where they were joined by such seminal figures as Willem de Kooning, Stefan Wolpe, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, MC Richards, Paul Goodman and Buckminster Fuller, before financial collapse closed the college in 1956.

WILL SHE UNDERSTAND?
Fielding Dawson
Illustrated by the Author
Written in New York between 1982 and 1987, the short stories in Will She Understand? bring us up to date with Fielding Dawson's work since the publication of and Virginia Dare, Stories 1976-1981 . Reviewing Krazy Kat , the San Francisco Chronicle's critic compared the work favorably with Hemingway, Cain and Chandler, and suggested that "Dawson makes his foreground study that underbelly of society which the hard-boiled school had described only as backdrop." In these 32 new stories, Dawson confirms and extends his mastery of a form he helped invent: the projectivist tale, in which a heightened sensitivity of attention registers in hair's-breadth detail not just physical realities but emotional events occurring in transformational, dreamlike, intuitional dimensions way off the tone-scale of the old, tired English narrative sentence. Memory is the treasure box of this writer. "The Blue in the Sky," for instance, returns to East St. Louis, 1954. In a nightclub on the eve of his departure for Germany, Dawson's G.I. narrator encounters two idols—jazz singer June Christy and Joe Jones, Count Basie's drummer. Letting the experience sink down through time, Dawson extracts its essence by twisting it around, re-living it from the now-dead drummer's point of view, making it "complete" at last. That mysterious coalescence of mercurial event with filtered perception—everyday life—is honored by the art of Fielding Dawson.

Fielding Dawson
June 22, 1999 The people involved in education in prisons are for the most part very dedicated, and also very interesting persons, but we are very different from each other. It's the job that brings us together. Within that group, any one of them up here would be telling you something else. And it's the way prisons reflect the outside world, as Mumia Abu-Jamal says that thoughtful, creative men and women who have been in prison, and go free, and become our friends, they see how prisons mirror society. In our talking at various locations and social situations demonstrations against the Rockefeller Drug Laws or the ceremony for the winners in the annual PEN Prison Writing Contest it's understood that the foundation for learning, to get going in education, begins by wanting to. I can't go into the very complicated experiences I've had, and what I've learned teaching inside, but I can say with authority that the guys in my workshops behind the high walls have a hunger to learn, a passion to get going in it, that is at least, you could say, hard to find or to euqal anywhere in the university/college system at large in this country.

Review of Fielding Dawson's The Orange in the Orange
Dawson peels away at himself, in the hero-teacher character, with zeal and more deeply than he has before. Sure, it's the setting, in prison, where he teaches writing, kind of forces the issue. A prison building is a spectacle for all of us outside, but inside everything is detail. Detail requires alertness, and in prison there are penalties for lack of alertness. The teacher of prisoners is a spectacle until he or she proves otherwise. Pronto. This book goes way against the grain of the entertainment culture, of industrial-strength spectacle; Dawson's always been interested in the mind at work. In The Orange in the Orange, the mind is working overtime, but the reader who works along with writer gets paid time-and-a-half. Reading Dawson, one is never ashamed of having idled away one's time on literary bon-bons. On the contrary, the pay-off is heightened alertness. With prison building being the fastest growing industry in the U.S... Fill in the blanks. GRIST On-Line. July 1995. HTTP://www.phantom.com/~grist

Similar materials exist for Edward Dorn's works of prose, including Abilene, Abilene, The Book of Daniel, Shoshoneans, Some Business Recently Transacted in the White World, Views , and What I See in the Maximus Poems . However, various published works by Edward Dorn appear to have left no drafts or revisions to examine. Edward Dorn's publications Bean News and Rolling Stock include submissions by various authors and editorial notes. Broadsides include art and published poetry, as well as announcements of book signings or poetry readings. Taped interviews and recorded poetry readings comprise the majority of the AV materials. Photographs range from family snapshots to photos for illustrations or articles. Numerous books and periodicals have been removed from the collection and can be found in Archives and Special Collections at the Dodd Research Center.
