Charles Darwin
"You care for nothing but shooting, dogs, and rat-catching," Charles Darwin recalled his father once telling him, "and you will be a disgrace to yourself and all your family." It was an inauspicious beginning for one of history's greatest scientists. Charles Darwin's grandfather was the poet, inventor, doctor and scientist Erasmus Darwin. Erasmus's son Charles planned to become a doctor like his father, but he died from an infection after accidentally cutting himself during an autopsy. So Erasmus's younger son Robert dutifully followed in his older brother's footsteps, and expected his own son, whom he named after his late brother, to practice medicine too. The Charles Darwin who would become famous, however, couldn't stomach dissection. Despite misgivings about his son's lack of direction, Robert Darwin consented to let Charles set sail aboard the Beagle before returning to England to become, as he planned, a country gentleman and parson. (Charles Darwin halfway succeeded he remained a country gentleman the rest of his days.) Darwin considered the voyage the defining experience of his life, and he was right it provided him with the evidence that would forever change biology. Unfortunately, a bite from a poisonous insect during his travels might have been the cause of Darwin's chronic illness in later years. After returning to London, Darwin became an independent scholar, then eventually married and started a family. Legend holds that Darwin happened upon one of science's most important theories while on his visit to the Galapagos Islands. In fact, Darwin devised no great evolutionary theory until after his return to England, and he was not the first person to propose evolution; it was widely discussed at least in scientific circles long before he published any of his theories. The question was, how did evolution occur? The reason Charles Darwin is a household name is because he proposed a viable mechanism for evolution, namely natural selection.

Lamarck's Signature : How Retrogenes Are Changing Darwin's Natural Selection Paradigm
(Frontiers of Science (Perseus Books)) by Edward J. Steele, Robyn A. Lindley, Robert V. Blanden, Paul Davies. "The evidence for a Lamarckian mechanism at work in the immune system now seems very convincing, contradicting one of the main dogmas of Darwinian biology. This book presents the experimental evidence to date as to how adaptive immune responses may be incorporated into the DNA of the organism, thus making them heritable material. If the retrogene mechanism is at work in the immune system what other roles might it be playing in evolution? A huge question for our current understanding of evolution." Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin, a naturalist, developed the theory of natural selection . He was born in Shrewsbury, England on Feb. 12, 1809. His father was also a naturalist and a physician. His mother died when he was eight. Darwin was the first of the evolutionary biologists . At age sixteen, Darwin left Shrewsbury to study medicine at University of Edinbourgh . However, he could not continue in the studies because the sight of surgery performed without anesthesia repelled him. Eventually, Darwin attended Cambridge University to study to become a clergyman. After he graduated, he went on a five-year scientific expedition to the pacific coast of South America on the H.M.S. Beagle from 1831 - 1836. On the Origin of Species was published in 1859 describing evolution and natural selection and giving a theoretical explanation for the diversity among living and fossil beings. His book was not well received among the general population who felt threatened at the notion that humans were descended from ape-like creatures. The scientific community, however, did grasp his theories and today his book forms the basis for many contemporary archaeological theories. In 1839 he married his cousin, Emma Wedgewood. After this, he spent much of his spare time gardening and raising pigeons. Charles Darwin lived with his wife and children at their home on Downe, England. It is thought that he may have contracted some kind of illness during his travels in South America. He died on April 19, 1882 and is buried at Westminster Abbey.

Little is known about the functions of the brain, but we can perceive that as the intellectual powers become highly developed, the various parts of the brain must be connected by very intricate channels of the freest intercommunication…" (Darwin, 1871, 1896, p. 68) Major Contributions The Theory of Natural Selection

CHARLES DARWIN Naturalist Charles Darwin was the official naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle during its world voyage of 1831-36. His observations during the journey led to the development of his theory of evolution. In 1858 he published his ideas of natural selection, and a year later he defined his theories in his Origin of the Species . Darwin's theories started a controversy that continues to this day. Although he was a religious man himself and once considered a career in the church, his theory of evolution is considered by some to be contrary to biblical teachings and therefore destructive to religion.

Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin was born on Feb. 12, 1809, The Mount, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Eng. d. April 19, 1882, Down House, Downe, Kent. His full name is CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN. Darwin was an English naturalist renowned for his documentation of evolution and for his theory of its operation, known as Darwinism. His evolutionary theories, propounded chiefly in two worksOn the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871)have had a profound influence on subsequent scientific thought. Darwin was the son of Robert Waring Darwin, who had one of the largest medical practices outside of London, and the grandson of the physician Erasmus Darwin, the author of Zoonomia, or the Laws of Organic Life, and of the artisan-entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. Darwin thus enjoyed a secure position in the professional upper middle class that provided him with considerable social and professional advantages. Youth and education Darwin's mother died when he was eight years old. Otherwise he enjoyed a golden childhood, cosseted and encouraged by adoring sisters, an older brother, and the large Darwin and Wedgwood clans. He was keenly interested in specimen collecting and chemical investigations, but at the Shrewsbury school, where he was an uninspired student, the headmaster, Dr. Samuel Butler, stressed the classics and publicly rebuked Darwin for wasting his time with chemical experiments. At age 16 he was sent to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he was repelled by surgery performed without anesthetics. During his two years in Scotland Darwin benefited from friendships with the zoologist Robert Grant, who introduced him to the study of marine animals, and the geologist Robert Jameson, who fed his growing interest in the history of the Earth.

13. Charles Darwin And The Galapagos
Tells about the voyage that shaped darwin's theory of evolution.
http://www.terindell.com/asylum/jason/darwin.html
Charles Darwin and the Galapagos
In 1831, Charles Darwin sailed to the Galapagos Islands in the HMS Beagle. The captain of the Beagle was Captain Robert Fitzroy, an illegitimate descendent of King Charles II. Charles Darwin was only twenty when he left Englad in 1831. Thirty years later he published his theory of evolution, unquestionable one of the most revolutionary ideas science has ever known. Because of Charles Darwin's "discovery" of these islands, much attention has been paid to them and many fascinating things have been discovered. One of the main questions was how so many different plants and animals arrived on the islands in the first place. The periodically changing currents have allowed many different species to immigrate to the islands. Some, such as sea lions, fur seals, and penguins, could swim with the help of the currents and giant tortoises are known to float and could have been carried by the same currents. Also, during the rainy season, rafts of vegetation break off and float out to sea. Most of the reptiles, the only terrestrial mammals (the rice rats), and insects must have arrived by this route.

Charles Darwin
was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. He was the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection. Like several scientists before him, Darwin believed all the life on earth evolved (developed gradually) over millions of years from a few common ancestors. From 1831 to 1836 Darwin served as naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle on a British science expedition around the world. In South America Darwin found fossils of extinct animals that were similar to modern species. On the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean he noticed many variations among plants and animals of the same general type as those in South America. The expedition visited places around the world, and Darwin studied plants and animals everywhere he went, collecting specimens for further study. Upon his return to London Darwin conducted thorough research of his notes and specimens. Out of this study grew several related theories: one, evolution did occur; two, evolutionary change was gradual, requiring thousands to millions of years; three, the primary mechanism for evolution was a process called natural selection; and four, the millions of species alive today arose from a single original life form through a branching process called "specialization."

of Charles Darwin and Darwiniana
Overview of the Collection The heart of the C. Warren Irvin Jr. Collection, donated to Thomas Cooper Library, in 1996, is Darwin's own writings. The collection now houses a complete collection of the first editions. of Darwin's books. Alongside these are many of the subsequent editions, showing Darwin's careful revision and updating of his scientific work, and a large selection of the books about Darwin's life and work. Dr. Irvin himself had expanded from this core to acquire selected works Darwin's predecessors (his grandfather Erasmus Darwin, Malthus, Lamarck, and Lyell) and by selected contemporaries and allies. Since its donation, the collection has been significantly expanded, with the help of the endowment established by Dr. and Mrs. Irvin. The few gaps among the Darwin firsts (notably the geology and barnacle books) have been filled, and systematic efforts have been made to add (1) the books mentioned as precursors by Darwin in his historical preface to the third edition of the Origin of Species ; (2) the works of Alfred Russel Wallace; and (3) previously-lacking books by T.H. Huxley. The collection holdings are fully catalogued into the library's on-line catalogue

Charles Darwin ( PORTRAIT - 49K ) was born on 12 February, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. His father, Robert Darwin, was a physician, the son of Erasmus Darwin, a poet, philosopher, and naturalist. Charles's mother, Susannah Wedgwood Darwin, died when he was eight years old. At age sixteen, Darwin left Shrewsbury to study medicine at Edinburgh University. Darwin's research resulting from this voyage formed the basis of his famous book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection . Published in 1859, the work aroused a storm of controversy. Here Darwin outlined his theory of evolution, challenging the contemporary beliefs about the creation of life on earth. Darwin continued to write and publish his works on biology throughout his life. He lived with his wife and children at their home in the village of Downe, fifteen miles from London. Thought now to have suffered from panic disorder, as well as from Chagas' disease contracted during his travels in South America, Darwin was plagued with fatigue and intestinal sickness for the rest of his life. He died on 19 April, 1882, and lies buried in Westminster Abbey.

Charles Darwin
Darwin is the first of the evolutionary biologists, the originator of the concept of natural selection. His principal works, The Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871) marked a new epoch. His works were violently attacked and energetically defended, then; and, it seems, yet today. Charles Robert Darwin was born at Shrewsbury. His father was a doctor and his mother was the daughter of Josiah Wedgwood. Darwin first studied medicine at Edinburgh. Will as they might, it soon became clear to the family, and particularly to young Charles, that he was not cut out for a medical career; he was transferred to Cambridge (Christ's Church, 1828), there to train for the ministry. While at Cambridge, Darwin befriended a biology professor (John Stevens Henslow, 1796-1861) and his interest in zoology and geography grew. Eventually, Darwin came under the eye of a geology professor, Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873). Just after a field trip to Wales with Sedgwick during which Darwin was to learn much from "Sedgewick's on-the-spot tutorials" and was to develop "intellectual muscle as he burnt off the flab" he was to learn, that, through the efforts of Professor Henslow, that he had secured an invitation to go aboard the
