Sharon E. Royer Largely known as the author of James and the Giant Peach (1961) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), Roald Dahl is also the author of three full-length works for early adolescents. It is of this group of young people that Dahl once said, " 'If my books can help children become readers, then I feel I have accomplished something important' " ( West ). Dahl's books for adolescents have caught the attention of young people and adults alike. The view of society revealed through his bookshis implied criticism of adults and his contempt for social institutionshas made his works popular with adolescents. This same view has brought mixed reactions from critics. The variety of audiences that Dahl successfully wrote for throughout his career demonstrates his ability to appeal to specific groups of readers. Ironically, Roald Dahl wrote extensively for adults and children before he attempted to write books for young adults. His writing career began when Cecil Scott Forester interviewed him for the Saturday Evening Post and submitted Dahl's fictionalized account of his adventures in the Royal Air Force to the newspaper ( Pendergast ). In 1943, Dahl wrote his first children's story, The Gremlins, for Walt Disney, who wanted to make it into a film. Although it was never produced, Disney later published the story, complete with Disney's illustrations (

R oald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Wales, the son of Norwegian immigrants. His colorful experiences as a student in English boarding schools were the inspiration for his books Boy and Danny, Champion of the World Dahl became a writer during World War II, when he recounted in a short story his adventures as a fighter pilot for the Royal Air Force. The story was bought by The Saturday Evening Post and a long, illustrious career was born. After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Dahl began writing children's stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first two novels, James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , are now considered classics and both have been made into blockbuster films. He was the winner of England's two most distinguished literary awards, the Whitbread Prize and the Children's Book Award, and seventeen of his works are perennial bestsellers. Throughout his life, Dahl took great joy in hearing from his readers. He loved nothing more than to know he was entertaining them, as well as instilling in them a love of reading and books. Dahl once said, "I know what children like." His stories are proof positive that he was right. Roald Dahl passed away on November 23, 1990.

Timeline Patricia Neal Complete Works Survey ... Back to Top
R oald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Cardiff, Wales. He was the third of four children and the only son of Harald and Sofie Dahl. Harald was a prosperous ship-broker. In January 1920, Roald's sister Astri died of appendicitis at the age of seven. Two months later, Harald died of pneumonia. Many around him believed that he died of a broken heart (Treglown 14). Who would have suspected that a man whose teacher wrote on his end-of-term report in 1930, of his work in English Composition, "I have never met a boy who so persistently writes the exact opposite of what he means. He seems incapable of marshaling his thoughts on paper" (Dahl, Wonderful 187) would become one of the most popular and best-selling authors of all time? After finishing high school in 1934, Roald went to work for the Shell Oil Company. He underwent training in England for three years, after which he was sent to East Africa (Wonderful 189). Dahl relished his time in Africa. He was in his mid twenties and in the mood for an adventure. He went to Kenya, Dar-es-Salaam, where h was to be based, the capital of Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and Zanzibar along the way. He would later recount his adventures at Shell and his subsequent experiences as an RAF pilot in his 1986 book, Going Solo. In 1939, as the war with Germany was beginning, Dahl left Shell Oil and drove to Nairobi, in Kenya, to join the RAF. For six months he trained in small airplanes called Tiger Moths. After that, he was sent to an air base in Iraq where he completed his training. He was sent to the Western desert in Libya where he joined the 80 squadron (Wonderful 192).
