about this author
"I can't remember a time, really, when I haven't been a writer Reading and writing were the two great escapes of my life and I suppose they still are." Robert Cormier
Robert Cormier (pronounced kor-MEER) lived all his life in Leominster, Massachusetts, a small town in the north-central part of the state, where he grew up as part of a close, warm community of French Canadian immigrants. His wife, Connie, also from Leominster, still lives in the house where they raised their three daughters and one son-all adults now. They never saw a reason to leave. "There are lots of untold stories right here on Main Street," Cormier once said. A newspaper reporter and columnist for 30 years (working for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette and the Fitchburg Sentinel ), Cormier was often inspired by news stories. What makes his works unique is his ability to make evil behavior understandable, though, of course, still evil. "I'm very much interested in intimidation," he told an interviewer from School Library Journal . "And the way people manipulate other people. And the obvious abuse of authority." All of these themes are evident in his young adult classic and best-known book

BIO
Robert Cormier was born in 1925 in French Hill, a French-Canadian neighborhood of Leominster, Massachusetts, and has lived in Leominster all his life. The second of eight children, Robert enjoyed a happy childhood in the nest of his close-knit family and community. His family provided him a haven from the outer world. Cormier didn't fare well in the streets of his neighborhood, where ballplaying ability counted for more than his love of books. He attended St. Celia's Parochial Grammar School, where some of the nuns gave him a terrible time. When he was in eighth grade, he watched in horror from his classroom window as his own house caught fire and burned. His teacher refused to let him go to see if his family was safe until he had said the requisite prayers. This incident enraged him for years afterward.
One of the nuns, however, made a remark that changed the way he thought of himself. His seventh-grade teacher read one of his poems and told him that he was a writer. He believed her, and continued to think of himself as one. Later, a teacher at Fitchburg State College was so impressed with one of Cormier's stories that she submitted it to a magazine; it became his first published work.

Robert Cormier Robert Cormier was born and has always lived in Leominster, Massachusetts. He grew up there, went to school there, courted and married there, and raised four children in the house where he and his wife, Connie, still live. "I never intend to live anywhere else,"he says." There are lots of untold stories right here on Main Street."
Cormier, who was a newspaper reporter and columnist for 30 years is inspired by news events and, in some cases, by circumstances in his own life for the basis of his plots. And, he has an outstanding ability to create stories that capture human interest. "I take real people and put them in extraordinary situations," he said in an interview in SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL. "I'm very much interested in intimidation. And the way people manipulate other people. And the obvious abuse of authority."
Robert Cormier began writing, he says,"in the seventh grade... I can't remember a time when I wasn't trying to get something down on paper." And it has been said of him that he was in love with his typewriter. He has won many prizes for his journalism and his novels for young adults. Included in his awards is the Margaret A. Edwards Award of the Young Adult Services Division of the American Library Association. This award is presented in recognition of those authors who provide young adults with a window through which they can view the world, and which will help them to grow and understand themselves and their role in society."I am delighted to be the recipient of this award,"he says," because it is such a clear reflection of what I've always hoped my novels could do show adolescents the bigness of what's out there and that happy endings are not our birthright. You have to do something to make them happen."

Chocolade oorlog (Sjaloom / 3e druk 1993)

Author
Biographical Statement: 1983 Biography from Fifth Book of Junior Authors and Illustrators 1999 update Pronunciation: (COR me ay) Robert Cormier was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, where he and his wife still make their home. He attended Fitchburg State College for a year and began his writing career at radio station WTAG in Worcester in 1946. In 1948 he moved into print journalism, first as a reporter with the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, and then at the Fitchburg Sentinel as a reporter and wire editor. He left this paper in 1966, and moved into freelance writing, both journalism and fiction. Cormier has received three awards for his journalism, two top prizes for newswriting from the Associated Press in New England, and an award for the best newspaper column from K.R. Thomson Newspapers, Inc. Fitchburg State College named him Doctor of Letters in 1977. Robert Cormier published his first novel, for adults, in 1960. Now and at the Hour was followed by two other adult books: A Little Raw on Monday Mornings in 1963, and Take Me Where the Good Times Are in 1965. While these were well received, it was in 1974, with his publication of a novel for teenagers called The Chocolate War, that Cormier found himself the target of often hostile attention. The Chocolate War is about Jerry, a parochial school student who refuses to sell chocolates for the school's fund drive. For this he is ostracized and harassed by students and faculty alike, and finally he is savagely beaten and left unconscious at the close of the book.

Beyond the Shadows of Robert Cormier
By Laura B. Hoffman
Robert Cormier is a former journalist and the author of several bestselling novels for young adults. His books repeatedly appear on the Best Books for Young Adults lists of the American Library Association, The New York Times and School Library Journal. He has won the Margaret A. Edwards Award for The Chocolate War, I Am the Cheese and After the First Death. His most recent novel In the Middle of the Night was nominated for an Edgar award.
Q: Why do you choose to write young adult novels?
A: I don't think of them that way. When I write I write to the fullest of my ability and I usually have an interesting and intelligent person in mind with whom I can be subtle. That person often turns out to be 14 years old, but that reader can also be 45.
Q: Do you receive a lot of feedback from your readers?
A: Yes, I get lots of calls. My telephone number is Amy Hertz's number in I am the Cheese. Word spreads around so kids call. Just today, I received a call from a class in Colorado Springs that was studying the book. Often I get calls from individual kids who just want to keep in touch. They are very inventive. They ask for Amy and create all kinds of scenarios saying Adam is calling. The letters and phone calls I get confirm what I am doing, and since writing is so solitary, it is good to get that confirmation.
Q: Your books are often considered dark. Why do you choose to write about the dark side of life?

Robert Cormier His Books Other Information Other Web Sites I n 1991, Robert Cormier received the MAE Award. The committee cited his novels: The Chocolate War I Am the Cheese , and After the First Death He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts. Cormier says, “I was a skinny kid living in a ghetto-type neighborhood wanting the world to know that I existed.” When his own children were small, he worked as a newspaper reporter and wrote at night. He writes a story over and over until he is satisfied. “With each novel, I fill a shopping bag with material that has been rewritten.” He wants to make the story as true as possible, yet censors often dislike his books, and this surprises him. The teen years, explains Cormier, are not a “peppermint world of fun and frolic.” He tries to show the “strength of young adults—their resilience, their ability to absorb the blows teenage life delivers.” One time a woman who hated his books met Cormier and instead of finding a monster, she saw who he really was—an ordinary guy trying to be “one of the good guys, sometimes failing, but trying anyway.”
